Spe Cial everywhere i go every new person i meet i get ideas for said charming Brown eyed Lorna Smith of Boissevain. I would t waste my life wallowing in self pity and i can t sympathize with any one who miss Smith was referring to her Handicap blindness. A victim of Dia betes on july 18, 1967, the Retina of her eyes Hemor raged and in two months her vision was reduced to 10 per cent. By november of that year she was quite sure there was no Hope for the return of her eyesight but she went to Rochester Minn to get the opinion of the Mayo clinic. They confirmed our she said Sim ply. Within six or seven months my eyesight was completely a Friend Brian Marshall who was sports editor for the Brandon Sun when she first met him encouraged her to write. He had seen her hockey reports coming regularly and was con Vinced that she had writing Talent. Mom taught me to Type when she. Herself did t know Lorna said. On feb. 9, 1971 she became a weekly columnist for the Brandon Sun and has no difficulty finding inspiration for each week s column. There Are few restrictions on subject matter and she finds that writing on a Vari Ety of subjects increases her interests and adds to her general knowledge of them All. She also finds that she is Able to interest More readers by writing about subjects Peculiar to each of several Western Manitoba towns. Brian Marshall wrote an article about miss Smith for his paper. It made me feel so she confides. I thought Why can t i make others feel Good by writing about daughter of or. And mrs. Lloyd Smith Lorna was born in the Boissevain hos Pital a Short time after it was built. She is an Only child. When my parents looked at me they said enough of she said with a laugh. After completing her Grade 12 at Boissevain she worked in a Bank at Minto for a year. Lorna has Many interests chief of which is sports. Her two favorite local teams Are the Riverside canucks in the Manitoba senior baseball league and the Brandon wheat Kings of the Western Canada hockey league. She and her father have season tickets to the wheat Kings games and at tend All they possibly can. She enjoys baking and in her Home does the major part of it. Mom usually puts pans in the oven and takes them out although i often do that too but everything must be done More carefully than miss Smith belongs to the Toast mistress club at Kil Larney. Twice each month a Deloraine Friend takes her to the meetings. She has always enjoyed 4h club activities and assists the local clubs in their Public speak ing programs. In 1968 she was a finalist in that Field and after her address in Winnipeg was awarded the Reserve championship. I like to put across the idea that we never know what will happen Tomor Row she said. This idea was the theme of her championship address. Other interests Are Power toboggans and animals. Raised on a farm a mile East of Boissevain she developed a real a f f e c t i o n for the cows horses dogs and cats there. I am very interested in miss Smith continued. Special though the Southeast Region a 1 comprehensive secondary school at Steinbach won t be opening its doors until the fall of 1972 extensive planning for the reshuffling of courses and students is already under Way.
