Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - December 7, 1971, Winnipeg, Manitoba Winnipeg free press tuesday december a 1971 Esdras Dufault 88, stands with his new wife Eva formerly mrs. Eva Anderson 65, after their marriage saturday in St. Emile Church 556 St. Anne s Road. After the wedding a reception was held at the Home of mrs. Anderson s son h. W. Anderson of 10 Roch Street East. Kildonan. The couple will reside at 10 Vallee Road St. Vital. King Hussein tightens grip by Robert Stephens Cairo special owns the assassination in Cairo of the Jordan prime minister Wasfi Tel was a grim reminder As it was doubtless intended to be that despite the crush ing of the palestinian guerrillas in Jordan by King Hussein s army in the Battle of last july and the previous. September the palestinians Are still a Force to be reckoned with in the Arab world. The assassination was a symptom of both the bitterness left by the Jordan fighting and of the extent to which it has encouraged More extreme attitudes within the palestinian guerrillas movement including the largest and most moderate group of Al Fatah. Wasfi Tel was the main instrument to Gether with the bedouin units of the Jordan army used by King Hussein in his Campaign against the guerrillas. Although the assassins Are believed to belong to an extreme faction of Ai Fatah pledged to avenge the killing by the Jordan army of one of the Fatah guerrilla leaders Abu Ayyad an official spokesman of the Faux dominated Palestine liberation organization has joined president Sadat of Egypt in condemning the lulling. In fact although apparently planned for some months past the killing came at a particularly crucial moment both for Egypt and for the official palestinian guerrilla leadership. For president Sadat is now try ing to organize National and pan Arab support for a doable barrelled peace or War policy of pressing Israel and the United states into producing an Early peace settlement based on the principle of fall israeli withdrawal from Egypt or if this fails of mobilizing for a renewed War against Israel. At the same time Egypt and saudi Arabia have been jointly trying to bring about a reconciliation and modes Visendi be tween King Hussein and the palestinian guerrilla leadership principally the Fatah. Talks on this subject have been going on in Jeddah at intervals Over the past few weeks. They have made Little or no Progress for it was dear that King Hussein does not want to accept the re turn to Jordan of palestinian guerrillas under their own autonomous leadership. The Only Means of outside leverage on King Hossein is the financial and military Aid he gets from saudi Arabia. Bat such leverage is limited by King Hussein s ability to count on substantial . Support in it faint returns peking spreads tales of Lin Piao s death by Stanley Karnow Washington special tons China specialists Here now believe that marshal Lin Piao the chinese defence min ister who was slated to succeed Mao tse Tung died during the Power struggle that still seems to be nagging the upper eche Lons of the peking Hierarchy. These specialists based their belief on the fact that the Chin Ese leadership is currently Tell ing communist party officials at All Levels that Lin was killed in an air plane crash in Mongo Lia in september apparently while trying to escape to the soviet Union. Other sources have reason to doubt that Lin was actually aboard the aircraft that went Down inside Mongolia about 100 Miles from the chinese Border. They disclose that the bodies recovered from the air plane Al though burned beyond recognition were those of seven men and two women in their mid 40s j v these sources concede How Ever that Lin May have died from natural causes. Lin who was 64, suffered from tuberculosis As Well As from wounds sustained during the chinese War against Japan. But whether Lin was killed in the air crash or died in bed the consensus among China experts Here is that the peking regime would spreading word of his death if lie were still alive. As one of these experts re marked the chinese have a credibility problem. They can not invent stories that May backfire against them in the fun Lin s reported death evidently occurred in. The midst of a High level Power began in the Spring or summer and appears to be going on in some form or other at present. His chief opponent in this struggle appears to have been Premier Chouen Lai. As the Story currently being recounted in internal chinese documents and briefings has it Mao supported Chou thereby forcing Lin and his main Mili tary cohorts to attempt to flee to the soviet Union. According to this version of the event Lin s military col leagues on the crashed aircraft were Gen. Huang Yung Sheng the chief of general staff Gen. We a Hsien the air Force com Mander and Gen. Litso Peng the political commissar of the Navy. Also aboard the air plane according to the tale being relat China were Lin s wife Yeh Chun who was elevated to the communist party politburo in 1969, and their son Lin i Kuo an air Force officer in his mid-20s. One account of the Story has it that the chinese leadership was alerted to the escape at tempt by Lin s daughter who goes by the nickname of Tou which signifies she is currently being extolled in internal chinese documents for her loyalty to Mao. The aircraft said to _ have been carrying Lin and his associates was one of four Bri Tish built Trident Jet airliners purchased by China from Pakistan. The aircraft were used exclusively b y High ranking chinese officers. The mongolian authorities invited peking to investigate the remains of the aircraft almost immediately after the crash took place. Informed sources reveal that the chinese investigation team was less interested in the identity of the victims than in determining whether they had stolen any military equipment or documents of value. The peking government also asked the mongolian authorities and the soviet Union which exerts predominant influence in Mongolia not to announce news of the air crash. The Mongo lians and russians disclosed in formation on the crash late in september. At the same time that the Trident was in flight several sources Here reveal another at tempt to flee from China was staged by chinese dissidents aboard either a helicopter or a fixed Wing aircraft. But this aircraft was reportedly apprehended before it chinese territory and forced Down. According to sources Here All except one of those aboard committed suicide rather than face arrest. Their identity is not known. In an Effort to tarnish Lin Piao s reputation chinese leaders have been circulating stories that he and his associates were involved in a conspiracy to assassinate Mao. One of these assassination at tempts is said to have occurred in Early september when Lin instructed a subordinate to bomb a train carrying Mao from the Central chinese City of banking to peking. As the Story is being told the subordinate was dissuaded by his wife and instead informed the peking authorities of Lin s order. Although the veracity of such tales is doubted by analysts Here the fact that they Are being circulated inside China is regarded As an indication of the lengths to which the present chinese leaders Are going in order to defame Lin. Striving to reconstruct the deeper causes of the internecine chinese Power straggle some specialists believe that Lin May have challenged Mao As Early As the Spring of 1969, when the communist party s 9th Congress was convened in peking. The chinese army was then in almost total control of China following Mao s tumultuous Cul Tural revolution which devastated the communist party a p a r a t . According to this thesis Lin sought to secure his authority by compelling Mao to appoint him As his Legal heir in the party Constitution promulgated at the communist Congress. Revival crusade starting tonight at at hum Chapel Portage Spence with reverend w. L Mcnod of Saskatoon exited nations a United Satkas Secretary u Ttaha re Tensed to his monday after Cine than a Wost of Taos Sta for arms and Money for his present policy As Well As on some american Protection a g n of any military intervention in Jordan by her Arab neighbors Syria and Iraq. On their Side the palestinian guerrillas Are divided about How far to go in co operating with King Hussein. Some of the Fatah leaders still believe that the state of Jordan provides the Only serious political and military base for the palestinians and that for the time being this Means coming some working agreement with King Hussein but some of the younger Mili Tants inside the Fatah Are against any Compromise. They now share the View of the More revolutionary leftist popular front for the liberation of pal Estine that the overthrow of King Hussein s regime is a Nec Essary part of the struggle against Israel. King Hussein has clearly made up his mind to Consoli Date his hold on his dynasty s original kingdom on the East Bank of Jordan whatever the future of the palestinian West Bank May be and to avoid being drawn into new hostilities with Israel. While he is leaving the initiative in peace making to Egypt and would be ready to follow Egypt s Lead if it were successful he would try to remain on the defensive in the event of War. Although president Sadat has once More repeated that his decision for War has already been made Egypt is still continuing her efforts to get a diplomatic settlement both through the United nations which debates the Middle East this week and through . Mediation. The meeting Here last week end of the Arab league defence Council was intended to co ordinate plans for the forthcoming Battle against Israel but it underlined the fact of which president Sadat was already Well aware that Egypt can count on very Little effective military help from other Arab states if she resumes the fight ing. King Hussein s present policy Means that Jordan s army the most effective in the Arab world outside Egypt is Likely to maintain a passive role. It also Means greater difficulty in maintaining military co Ordina Tion Between Egypt and Syria or in bringing any forces from Iraq Back into position on the Eastern but perhaps the most significant aspect of the tragedy of Wasfi Tel is its warning that however desperate the present position of the palestinians they cannot be simply steam hollered out of existence As a National political Community by the Ose of military Force.
