By Andy Mellen from the Bottom of the Hill the Large Structure is a Bleak imposing figure resembling an isolated fortress ominously reminding anyone who passes by that someday they too might Call it Home. It i called Stony Mountain Penitentiary and just one Short visit is enough to make you regret even such previously Long forgotten crimes As taking a Nickel Choco late bar from the Corner store when you were seven years old. I was fortunate i was Able to leave after a couple of hours. For most of the men it will be years before they Are allowed to walk through the doors to the world outside those virtually a scalable Walls. At first it was a bit unnerving mingling with a Hundred or so prisoners whose crimes ranged from non capital murder to peddling narcotics. After a Short while though i began to realize that these Are simply men who have made a mistake and Are being punished for it. Most of them Are Friendly and eager to discuss such varied subjects As Rock music world politics Vietnam and even crime. Visits such As ours Are rare and the fact that a Cou ple of Rock bands Homer and next were performing made it a big occasion. The inmates were a Fine Audi ence and obviously appreciated the blend of original and old Standard songs done by the bands. Aside from its exterior Stony Mountain must rate As one of Canada s Best prisons in terms of facilities. Prison ers have private cells with piped in am and pm radio. The rooms Are Small but provide each Man with enough space to store gum tobacco and similar items purchased with the Money he makes from working the pay ranges from 35 to 85 cents per Day depending on which class the Man is whereas prison once was synonymous with punish ment rehabilitation appears to be the chief objective now. Visits such As ours along with opportunities to participate in groups like the Penthouse players drama group give the men at least some Contact with the real world. Short stuff it appears that Woodstock has. Maintained its magnetic Appeal judging by the reception it received last week at the u of m. An overflow crowd jammed the Multi purpose room to View the Lisuk and the Over whelming Success prompted the people in charge to add a 2 . Showing the next Day. Len Klady who handles most of the film bookings promises some More biggies in the new year. Winnipeg music fans anxious to see the big shows had better be prepared to Start spending More than the Standard to 55 that they be been accustomed to Accord ing to promoter Jerry Shore. Jerry Points out that even the Winnipeg symphony which receives a healthy tax free government subsidy each year still has to charge As much As for its performances. Bands such As led Zeppelin and the rolling stones charge to for an hour and a half s work so it s Only common sense that promoters will be forced to in the Vicinity of for shows of this calibre. Wrestling is becoming big big big in our City since the matches switched from the Winnipeg auditorium to the Arena with crowds of up to fans on hand in some instances. Guess who manager Don Hunter who with his solid 274-Pound Frame could probably take care of himself quite nicely in the ring is one of the sport s big Gest backers and i imagine that you might run into him.
