Youth scene top prices paid prices Rose As High As at an auction of Winnipeg police department Buffalo Coats Satur Day. About 100 people jammed into Gray s auction Mart 91 Albert Street for the Sale of 90 Coats. The last such auction was held in january. One Man buying for skin and Bones limited of Toronto bought about 25 Coats. He paid the Day s High of for one coat. A Man who said he was a professional fur buyer from Minneapolis left the auction with Only four Coats. He had said at the beginning he planned to buy 50. High prices however kept him from his goal. He said he had attended auctions All Over the world but had never seen such an emotional audience. People weren t buying according to value he said. Hank Vernars buying for Hercules department stores of Toronto also left with four Coats. He attributed the High prices to a lot of individuals who really wanted to get a or. Vernars said he Felt his trip was worthwhile nevertheless. The Man buying for skin and Bones said he had hoped to Huy 40 Coats. He bought a substantial number last year. There was some grumbling in the crowd about the number he bought this year. The lowest Price paid was most Coats went for More than by Andy Mellen More than anything else the main Barrier obstructing educational Reform and advancements is that old Bugaboo Money. No matter where you look i doubt if you la find More obvious proof for that ancient adage Money during my recent conversations with educators Mirou ghost the City Money has been the most often cited reason Why Winnipeg s schools Haven t been Able to Institute new programs or update existing ones. Most of the progressive schools in North America such As Bishor Carrol in Calgary and Melbourne High school in Mel Bourne Florida have received special funds in order to set up such things As unstructured classes and phase sys tems which allow the student to Progress according to his own abilities. Money is tight everywhere and there s no exception when it comes to appropriations for education. Many peo ple fail to see the need for trying new educational meth ods and of course Are then reluctant to come through with the Bucks to pay for improvements which they Don t feel Are necessary. It s a rather sad situation when you Stop and think about it. Money does indeed talk but its voice should t be so overwhelmingly loud that it deafen Many people to the need for advances in education. The mailman cometh dear Andy i m writing about the Umsu Coffee House which you have been mentioning in your column. Due to Christmas holidays Etc. We have closed Down until Jan. 12, when we Hope to re turn with a bigger and better program. Our audiences have been a Little disappointing up to this Point but we re going to try to remedy this in the new year. It s disappointing to see How Many local folkies Are getting discouraged by the Lack of places to perform in the City. Some of these people Are going to be really Good if they can get proper exposure. It seems that there is no future for local musicians unless they slug their guts out in a pub band. I think that a City of Over half a million people can support a proper music Industry and i m going to try my Best to promote the idea. Sincerely Dave Ediger 1174 Clifton Bay mpg. R3e 2t9.
