Timeout Maurice Smith Eddie sends regards while on vacation in Freeport grand Bahama Island recently we had an enjoyable visit with former Winnipeg dentist or. Eddie Colson. Eddie has been located in the Bahamas for the past four years and says he has enjoyed every minute of it. He and his wife and five children the youngest of which is two and was born in Freeport have a Lovely Home and Are very much involved in the Community since he took up residence in the Bahamas Eddie has be come an ardent deep sea fishing enthusiast. Eddie wanted to take us out for a Little action but unfortunately we were not Able to take advantage of his offer. Both he and mrs. Colson asked to be remembered to their Many friends in Winnipeg. Grand Bahama Island is a tremendous place for a Winter vacation particularly if you enjoy Golf bathing and fishing. There Are five championship Golf courses in and around Freeport and we were fortunate enough to play four of them. Each is a tremendous Challenge and demand accuracy off the tee. Hit a Ball into the Jungle and you might As Well not bother to look for it. All courses Are beautifully groomed and exceedingly pleasant to play. One can use every club in the bag this was particularly the Case at the Emerald and Ruby courses at the Swank King s inn country club. Shannon is the newest course in Freeport and is less than a year old. Despite the fact that it has been in operation such a Short time the fairways Are quite Lush and the greens excellent. Had we not been told the course was less than a year old we would t have believed it from the condition and growth. Greens at All five courses Are Bermuda grass and we found them difficult to judge and fathom. It s quite expensive unless you Are Well off we would t advise visiting grand Bahama Island on your own. Hotels and food not to mention transportation which you must have Are quite expensive. However if one signs up with one of the fre quent All inclusive Tours that Are available the Cost is much less. Usually hotel guests can enjoy the privileges of one of the five Golf courses but we would advise taking you own clubs Good rental sets Are available at and a motorized Caddy cart is a must. They rent at per round. When and if you become tired of lying around on the Beach playing Golf or fishing there Are two gambling Ca Sinos stocked with one armed bandits and where you can play Black Jack Dice or what have you. The former we noted were particularly popular with the female sex especially the 25 cent machines. If you Are not interested in gambling Freeport has some excellent night clubs and entertainment but Here again it is not cheap. But the Sunshine is free and the weather and beaches gorgeous. During the period we were there the temperature was mostly in the seventies although it did hit 82 one Day. That we found is a Little too hot because of the extreme humidity. All hotels have air conditioning and they need it. We stayed at the oceanus South a 16-Storey Structure which we under stand is owned by Canadian interest in Montreal. Freeport unlike Nassau is a completely modern City. It has been in existence Only five or six years and is Al most totally controlled by private developers who planned and Laid out the entire area even Down to build ing the excellent roads. It was a booming area a couple of years ago attracting Many new residents every Day but we understand this has since changed and Many Are now leaving the Island for reasons which we will not go into Here tourists however Are still finding the Bahamas a great attraction. More than one million visited the various islands during the past year. It is of course the main Industry there being Little manufacturing although Freeport does have a Large Cement Plant. Thinks he s bigger than the game this column has never been As critical of International ice hockey federation president Bunny Ahearne As some sports writers and broadcasters in this country. While realizing he is a very egotistical Little Man we nevertheless Felt that in most instances Bunny was a lot smarter than the Canadian Amateur hockey officials he Ever had to Deal with. Any time he got into an argument with them he generally wound up the Winner mainly be cause he did his Homework and consequently knew his subject. However we think Ahearne is carrying his Power and authority much to far when he Stoops to prevent nine and 10-year-Olds from playing exhibition games As he has done in the Case of the Ottawa team presently in Finland. Ahearn May feel he has an axe to grind with the Ca Nadian Amateur hockey association but he s being much too vindictive when he carried his bitterness to the extent he has in this particular instance. Whether or not Ahearne has overstepped his Bounds we do not know. Chances Are he has t but it would appear he has become far too autocratic for his own Good or that of the International ice hockey federation. Bunny now seems to think he s bigger than me game of hockey itself. It s time the i if took the action necessary to prove otherwise.
