Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - March 6, 1972, Winnipeg, Manitoba Brand Mellen perhaps time has dulled my memory some what but i honestly Don t remember having much fun in school. Sure there were a lot of Good times that i la re member Well into the future. Fun however was some thing usually reserved for after school hours imagine my Surprise then when i paid a visit to Van Belleghem elementary schooling Windsor Park one. Day last week and found myself surrounded by a sea of Happy faces. The More than .600 students attending grades 1 trough 6 there Are discovering that learning involves much More than handing in essays and remembering dates for a history exam. What s the reason to be exact there Are several. First of All a lot of the stigma created by concepts such As grades and pass fail systems has been eliminated. Stu dents at Van Belleghem Are designated As year i year 2 and so on through years of elementary Educa however just because a child is taking year three mathematics and science does t mean that he can t also be doing year four English. As the scho9l s Walter chum Echuk pointed out the number of years a child has been in school does t necessarily coincide with the subject matter he might be by allowing the student to Progress according to his interest and ability individual initiative is fostered and encouraged. Thus he does t being forced to rehash five digit mathematical additions which most of the other students in his age group might be taking but is allowed to move to things and measurement which Are much More challenging. Van Belleghem is striving for in the to r d s of or. Chum Echuk student centred situation where textbooks will be a. Tool but won t be rigidly adhered As a re sult students Are finding much More Opportunity to make their learning process Well As useful. A student entering .years.4 through 6 takes most of his classes in an open area surrounding the school Library where a team of three jointly supervise around 90 eager faces. Unlike. Many schools where might and open area is conducive to movement. discovers a certain Freedom to pursue personal interests More importantly finds himself making More pm his own. R in other words the onus on the student to Nike or Lake himself As far As that s a lot More to life and throw someone into a class leave then expect him to regurgitate of facts an. T found my visit both encouraging. There s one unfortunate aspect to the situation though. After going through six year s of school in which learning was fun.
