Delights lady Frederick is charming and a sheer Delight. She has a Way with men of All Ages and is cursed or blessed with a certain Irres stability. Somerset maugham has endowed the leading lady of his 1903 play which opened at the Manitoba theatre Centre Mon Day evening with a ready wit and an easy is Clever and beguiling Alfin the same breath she is a woman of the world. Maugham has been accused of being a total cynic. Rather he was a Man of the world and so could sweep All trifling emotions away with a single truth. I wish no one to take me for other than i am and on the other hand i see no need to accept others pre maugham wrote lady fre Derick with a definite purpose in mind it was to be a comedy with a Large part f or actress. He has succeeded on both counts. The play is Delight fully humorous Rand the role of lady Frederick played by Irena is a veritable tour de miss Mayeska is a charming woman in the character of lady Frederick. She glides through the rooms of her hotel apartment with entertains her suitors and her adversaries with the same Candor but with varying results. Miss Mayeska carries the role Well. She captures the spirit of the character and delivers up the lady Frederick Somerset maugham truly wanted us to see in All her guises. At the outset of the play we see her As a foil for the plots of others barely in control of her own destiny. But then her re sources come to the fore and in the end she triumphs As we knew she would. In her most triumphant scene miss Mayeska appears on stage devoid of All artifice of the stage or the everyday world. She wears no make up no Hairdo and certainly none of the magnificent gowns we have previously seen her in. Yet even in this miss Mayeska shines through. She delivers her lines beautifully throughout the scene while applying her make up and fixing her hair. Once again lady Frederick triumphs and gets her Way. Miss Mayeska last seen Here in Harold Pinter s the Home coming at Mac is a great lady of the theatre and it was a pure Delight to have her Enchant us for the evening. Paradine Foules the leading Man was played by Basil hos Kins. This role Marks or. Hos Kins debut on the North Ameri can stage. He has a definite feeling for the language of the play and carries off the affectations and the elusive Charm with ease. The first act is the most difficult for the role As Foules must spout platitude after Plati tude while never entering More than superficially into any conversation.
