Buu 990 after the supercharged Emo Tion of saturday s symphony concert it was a considerable contrast to hear a concert of Renaissance and baroque music performed at the Eva Clare Hall of the University of Manitoba on sunday afternoon. The artists were Paula sue kor Man Soprano Lawrence Rit Chey harpsichordist and Rich Ard Burleson Lut Enist. The music was by italian and English composers. The italians represented were Francesco Damilano Antonio Vivaldi and do Menico Scarlatti. The English were Dowland Johnson Robin son Bull Rosseter and Arne. The instruments used were a two manual harpsichord a spinet and a Lute. Each was heard separately and in combi nation and the songs were Sung to each separately and both to Gether. Of the Renaissance music John Dowland loomed up very Large in his Lute songs. In a Fork Ness let me dwell was a Beautiful sustained song and can Shee excuse my wrongs was a most perfect example of this genre. It had a free rhythm and the voice part was one of sever Al Golden threads in a musical tapestry. Paula sue Korman has an Ideal voice for this kind of music. While naturally warm in Quality it has an impersonality that allows the emotion of the words and music to emerge unsullied. The biggest work on the pro Gram was a Motet 0 qui Coeli by Antonio Vivaldi. The accompaniment with harpsichord and Lute was beautifully realized. In the third Section the aria Rosa quae Coriture we had vocal phrases that formed Lovely Arches and a telling Bass part that descended chromatically. Miss Korman executed the ornaments in a most tasteful manner and her Fine coloratura alleluia were very attractive. Or. Ritchy was heard As so Loist in three Galliard for spinet two Scarlatti sonatas and an a r n c sonata for the harpsichord. This latter was most attractive. It showed the and Vance in tonality that the baroque period developed Over the modal Renaissance music. In his spinet playing or. Ritchy charmed with the Lovely ornaments of the virginal setting of can slice. Or. Burlison s Lute music consisted of two Galliard and two Ricc cars. All his playing had style and Beauty. The four Arne songs were a Joy to hear. The Graceful faithful Lover and the roguish when daisies pied were captivating. As an encore miss Korman Sang Michael Arne s the lass with the delicate air. We hear this song in various arrange ments but rarely do we hear it with the original fior Itura. It was a Lovely finish to a re freshing afternoon.
