The Are answers to questions you have asked about catered dinners at restaurants and about two local eating places. Many Winnipeg restaurants which May be quite Ordinary for off the menu meals Shine when they Are allowed to Cater something special. One Good example is the International inn. In recent months we be had two private dinners there both of which were out standing. The first was the annual dinner of the Cana Dian restaurant association which i described earlier in this column and which proved that restaurateurs feed each other nicely. The second was last month a smaller dinner for about 40 served in one of the hotel salons. The seven course menu read like a Page from larousse gastronomic be first came Avocado halves scooped and filled with seafood and Avocado next a sherried consomme then rolled filet of sole in a Patty topped with lobster sauce followed by Caesar salad. The main course brought a Wago Ful of chateaubriand flamed and served French style with appropriate vegetables. For dessert there was baked Alaska. After dessert there were cheese fruit Coffee and liqueurs. Tie whole dinner was beautifully pre pared and served with appropriate wines of course. The meal exclusive of wine and liquor Cost its hosts about a person. It had been planned Well in Advance with chef Fernie Kirouac. Most of our major hotels and Many of our restau rants offer this service. The charter House hotel for instance caters three or four meals annually for a local gourmet club. Some such As the International inn prefer to Cater to Large groups of 25 or More. Others such Ashy or Welcome Small per Sonal dinner parties offering Small dining rooms for privacy. The Tuxedo inn has a Lovely dining room which seats As few As eight or As Many As 22. Oliver offers a Small Library. The Winnipeg inn has special rooms for Small dinner parties. With Advance notice will prepare anything your heart desires. The Cost depends on what you want. Most include the Price of the Din ing room in the Cost. Other Compromise you can order special food but there no private dining room or there Are private dining rooms but no special food you order from the some Welcome dinner parties anytime. Others prefer during the week or sunday nights because Friday and saturday nights Are hectic. If you want to plan an anniversary dinner birth Day or just a Small dinner party you can enjoy too phone the chef or maitre d of your favorite restau rant i Haven t mentioned them All and see what you can work out. We tried the Transylvania inn on Bina Highway last week and found the food Good meat and potatoes style but not outstanding. The two sided menu offers Canadian specialities such As roast beef steaks spareribs and breaded shrimp As Well As european such As Weiner Schnit Zel hungarian goulash and Saue Braten. The Weiner schnitzel i ordered arrived not much like a Weiner schnitzel at All but quite Good nevertheless. It was More a deep Fried thick veal Steak served with Fried potatoes and a combination of tinned and Frozen assorted vegetables. The other dish a pork filet with mushrooms was t As Good As the veal but it was still acceptable. I had been warned the beef Strogonoff was t Good. Notable were the generous portions neither of us could anywhere near finish and the excellent Quality of the meat. Prices for full meals including soup bread vege tables dessert and beverage Are mostly under . Children portions Are available at a 40 per cent reduction. The restaurant is licensed and comfortably decorated. Yes the maharajah restaurant on Sherbrook Street which serves East Indian food has improved quite a bit since we were last there. The new management which took Over last year kept the menu but changed chefs. The menu offers seven Indi an dishes two appetizers and eight Side orders. For the faint hearted there is breaded shrimp and chips Canadian style. We began with Samosa a Fried Roll containing spicy ground beef and onion which was quite Good. For the main meal we ordered shrimp Curry beef Madras Chicken Vindalon and mughal i Briyana. Or dered from the dinner menu they Are served with Rice onion salad and beverage. On the Side we or dered dal a spicy lentil sauce to be spooned Over Rice which came in two forms both Good and paratha a Flat soft and circular Fried bread. The beef Madras and the shrimp Curry were particularly Good. The Briyana was a bomb. Fiat and in interesting in taste it was made even less appetizing by the Green food colouring used to tint the Rice. The paratha was Good. Try to avoid dessert. It canned and either a lovingly Sweet or Mushy. Prices with Beer the maharajah is fully licensed were about the same As at the twin Park restaurant the Only other place in Winnipeg for Indian food bet Ter in some ways than the total Bill for four of us was about i a bit leery of the restaurant generosity in offering the curries mild or hot on when you there request. I be been told by friends Well Practised in in Dian cookery that the spices must be simmered in the dish for a Long time to get Good flavor and to avoid stomach i suspect the maharajah merely adds More spices to the already cooked dish to make it hot Ter. So if you want the curries hot or anything stronger than Milquetoast mild phone the restaurant Early in the Day and ask it. To Cook your food that Way. Don t be afraid of the spice. Just eat lots of paratha and Rice with the hot stiff. It probably won t help but the starch is filling million suits filed in shootings Cleveland Ohio a suits totalling million were filed wednesday against the state of Ohio and the Ohio National guard in connection with the disturbance at Kent state University May 4, 1970, that left four students dead and nine injured.
