The flies in the system s ointment Are the two pirate stations that Are set up on Large barges outside the three mile territorial limit in the North sea. These stations operate As private Enterprise and Sel advertising in the country and have everything including taped musical pro Grams and talk shows flown out by helicopter. There was a Story about the extra Large pirate station setting up after the initial one had been operating successfully for some time. When the big one got going they could reach London with ease and were Selling their time to both English and Continental advertisers. It affected the business of the first station rather drastically so one night they pulled a raid on the larger station to smash their equipment and piracy on the High seas was happen ing All Over again. There Are Many interesting things about this country and i be made up my mind to Fly Kim Back Here again sometime for an extended visit. P r o d u c e d by the London based International Institute for strategic studies the Survey briefly recorded that in the past year the number of soviet Divi Sions in military districts adjoining the chinese Frontier went up from 30 to 44 three times the number there three years ago. This compared with the -31 divisions positioned in Europe West of the soviet Union. Reviewing major political and military developments in 1972, the Independent research Institute said China and the soviet Union had plenty of fuel for conflicts Over ideology and territory. The Rise of China and Japan had made East Asia a major new Centre of the world balance which was also less susceptible to super Power control than Europe it added. A new International Power replacing the sex elusive super Power domination of the cold War the Survey said. Close snip american relations and China s entry into the United nations had revealed China As a Force to be reckoned with by the United states and the soviet Union. Japan the economic giant had been forced out of its american protectorate into a potentially More Active political role. One of the motives of . The soviet Union having sur passed the United states in land based missiles though not in warheads in 1970 now seemed Likely to equal the United states in strategic missile carrying submarines by mid 1973 and not in 1974 As previously supposed. Church merger suffers setback London up supporters the ecumenical cause Are expressing dismay now that the projected merger of the Church of England and the methodists has again failed to win Ade quate acceptance in the anglican general Synod. But the archbishop of Canter Bury while showing sadness Over the setback has urged advocates of Church Unity to re main steadfast. Although this has not come said archbishop Michael Ramsey in a reference to the anglican methodist merger there Are Many signs in All the churches of the conviction that they must work together As fellow the general Synod s failure wednesday to give the unification plan the required .75-per cent Over All majority is de scribed by an editorial in the daily Telegraph As a sad set Back to the cause of Church a total of 34 out of the 40 Vot ing Bishops supported the merger. But 80 of the 232 clergy in the Synod voted against the proposal As did 87 among the 234 laity present. The project thus won Only 65.8 per cent of the votes on an Issue which has been a subject of great controversy in the anglican Church for 25 years. Causing anxiety in some ecumenical quarters was the ques Tion of whether the wednesday vote would add to scepticism about christianity and especially institutionalized christianity. The guardian refers to a fear that the latest evidence of continuing Church fragmentation is Likely to deter rather than attract a nation held to be largely indifferent to the claims of the Christian opponents of the Unity plan concentrated some of their criticism on what they considered to be the ambiguity of the pro posed service of reconciliation which forms part of the. Merger formula. The Telegraph cited the strongly entrenched group Ings of High Church and Evan g e 1 i c a 1 elements within the Church of England As one fac Tor in the latest rejection. But some observers saw the vote As a prelude to still More discussions about possible Ang lican methodist Unity. On the other hand the daily express urged an end to the merge.? attempts. F. The wednesday vote should be an end to the matter the Beaverbrook paper argues and the anglican Church can now devote All its energies to us main task.1.
