Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - May 6, 1972, Winnipeg, Manitoba Winning Felt of toss satu10ay, May 1972 in Nepal the abominable snowman is a fact of life my to tace Mrtka Kat Bute a Little Marble Kretow us Towi there s a Kraken hearted terms the grave of mad Carew am the yellow god Wever j. Milton Hayes Thi a attn Eyt of the yellow god by George Bryant the Toronto Star Katmandu Nepal i Haven t got around to climbing mount Everest yet nor have i any present plans to do so but i Al most saw it this morning. 1 got up at 3 . And drove so Miles through a Black night full of Hai Piti turns and pot holes and nameless forms Only to be. Greeted by a morning fog which turned the mountains into molehills. In fact they May have been molehills for All 1 could Tell. Now when anyone asks me Why i drove All that Way to see mount Everest 1 won t be Able to reply because it s it was t there. Actually i m not too sure it was Ever there. It May All be a figment of sir Edmund Hil Lary s imagination. In a country where the Yeti or abominable snowman is a fact of life any log is possible. And the Yeti is a fact of life Here. They can t show him to major changes seen in religious publishing Toronto up the executive director of a new Council of eight religious academic societies says the organization will bring about major changes in religious publishing in North America. Or Norman Wagner said the Council of the study of religion will co ordinate All publishing among its member groups in. Canada and the United states through new Headquarters established at Waterloo lutheran University. The Council whose organizations have a combined membership of will attempt to lower prices for publishing while improving the Quality of religious writing he said. He told a news conference that the Council will handle advertising and distribution of books and other works produced by members. Well be getting into the textbook business he said arid added that the Council later will handle other works of a religious nature. The Quality of religious scholarship will be improved he said by offering scholars the Prospect of having their works published. Kennedy myth sets impossible Standard by Godfrey Sperling the Christian science Monitor news service Philadelphia the democratic presidential candidates Are being chewed up one by one by something that can Only be called the Kennedy this is by no Means the wish some democrats entertain for sen. Edward m. Kennedy. Instead it is a de sire reaching far out among rank and file democrats for a return to the judge blames unionists Quebec up three Union leaders of a common front of Public service workers were personally responsible for the presence of riot police and procedural delays at their court appearance thursday chief Justice Frederic Dorion of Superior court said Friday. The leaders were ordered to appear to face contempt of court citations for allegedly Vio lating injunctions during last month s 11-Day Public service strike. Half an hour after the sche 1 ruled Start of the hearing they walked out saying they would not be heard in the presence of riot police and did not have to sit through delays. Chief Justice Dorion replied in a statement that the delays were caused by lawyers and supporters of the Union leaders. The courtroom was so packed with spectators that police were called to ensure order. Marcel Pepin president of the confederation of National Trade unions Louis Laberge president of the Quebec federa Tion of labor and Yvon Char Bonneau president of the que Bec teachers corp., compared the courtroom atmosphere to that of a banana in other repercussions Friday of the Public service strike non medical workers at notre Dame Hospi Tal in Montreal walked off their jobs for a study session after five of their colleagues were suspended. Hospital administrators said they were really pro testing emergency legislation passed to end the strike. Unions and eight officers received fines jail terms for ordering maintenance of Essen tial the strike. A spokesman for notre Dame Hospital said that since the strike was ended by Back to work legislation april 22, employees have been sabotaging Hospital reporting to work late and calling in sick More frequently than before. Kennedy. These democrats measure every candidate against an impossible Standard against a Kennedy who never existed against a Kennedy who was a King Arthur reigning Over a wonderful and magical came lot. They really Don t be Lieve the myth. Yet they still use it As a reference Point for sizing up their presidential candidates. And naturally no one Mea sures up. Thus As this reporter moves from primary to Pri Mary and talks to increasing numbers of democratic and leaders he comes to understand Why it is so very difficult for any one candidate to gain the Ascendancy and from there to put a Hammerlock o n the nomination. The Kennedy wish is every where expressed in Many forms such As Muskie just does t excite me very or Mcgovern is too or Humphrey is worn or More often than any bother comment none of the candidates looks very Good to it is a powerful negative Force dragging Down any of the candidates whose head pops up above the others. President Johnson knew All about this Kennedy he tried mightily to measure up to this impossible dream. He thought he could make the Grade by pushing through a record amount of legislation much of which had been a part of the Kennedy plan for the nation. But or. Johnson without style or dash or humor never came close to gaining acceptance among the Kennedy cult strive As he did to please. He could t even come close to the mythical Standard. He knew it and it grated on him. Robert Kennedy did not have to measure up. He was the Standard. In the eyes of the Kennedy Faith Ful this Kennedy was the obvious heir to the round table. And had it not been for president Johnson who held a tight hold on political leaders and delegates Rob Ert Kennedy would have been a shoo in for the nomination. But a bitter pres ident resentful of always being kept outside the Ken Nedy Circle was Able to use his formidable Power of of fice the Nomina Tion from Kennedy and give it to his vice president Hubert Humphrey. Edward Kennedy would be the next logical heir of Camelot. But his claim to reign has been seriously marred by Chappaquiddick at least for the time being. Thus while i hear the Kennedy Standard being imposed again and again to the disadvantage of one or More of the candidates i never hear the words Teddy Kennedy is the one we really instead the Kennedy admirers of the Camelot school usually ruefully say such things As this of senator Kennedy if it had t been for Chappa quid Dick or maybe Teddy will be ready later or More critically Teddy in t up to John and but in the end this same powerful negative Force May bring about a deadlock at the democratic Conven Tion in which senator Ken Nedy May have to run against his better judgment and at a moment when the millions of believers in the Kennedy myth Aren t quite ready to say that Teddy really measures up to what they want in the White House. Copyright 1972 Christian science publishing society whether seeing the abominable Nowman was supposed to have and anything to do with that. How can you be sure he in t see a Yak or some 1 asked recalling vaguely they were both hairy. All the Heads in the car swi j in astonishment. But now could anyone mistake a a for a one Man asked. Since 1 was t sure what a a looked like let alone a Yeti compromised in my usual fashion by capitulating completely and agreed that would a pretty stupid thing to do. Certainly much too stupid for any Cousin of his. You think we Are silly to be Ieve in the Yeti when we have not seen said the same Man adding with glee but you believe in Sag Armatha mount score one for him. As needed to be reminded the trip had been in vain. But i be seen photographs of i countered. How can you he asked. How do you know it is not some other Mountain i Tell you How. You believe your Fel Low men. And so do by now we were bouncing into Katmandu so on. That note we reached an amicable agree ment. There was either an Everest and a Yeti or there was neither. Personally i m waiting for the next party that sets off to climb the Mountain to fall into the world s biggest Hole. The second and third biggest Are on the Road we took this morning. And so Are a lot of others it would take a foothill or two to fill then Back in the heart of the City we went our separate ways which in my Case meant exploring a place that had intrigued my imagination since i first came across Thi name in Hayes poem the Green Eye of the yellow god a Long time ago. I Don t know whether Hayes Ever reached Katmandu but he hepatitis vaccine hinted Washington a the United states government re ported wednesday a possible new Lead toward developing a vaccine against serum hepatic a liver inflaming malady transmissible by blood trans fusions and contaminated medi Cal syringes and Needles. Serum hepatitis is one of the two forms of presumed caused by which together strike up to americans a year. The serum Type is responsible for about of the cases and about deaths. The National institutes of health reported that a team of its scientists had for the first time successfully transmitted an agent associated with human serum hepatitis to a Laboratory animal. And the Nih said the agent is presumed to be a virus of some kind. The experimental animal was the Rhesus Monkey. Scientists have Long suspected that serum hepatitis of Man is caused by a said the Agency s announcement. How Ever it has not been possible to grow the virus in the Labora tory until managed to catch the spirit of the City anyway. A one eyed yellow idol would feel right at Home Here. Certainly he d have plenty of company. This is a land of buddhists and hindus a place of thou Sands of temples and shrines squares and Ghriri is. All spread out with Little seeming rhyme or reason. And on the streets is just As confusing a collection of figures and costumes Broad mongolian faces and slim Indian forms saris and blankets and Moun of pagodas and Bells and altars j Tain ponchos Dho tees and Semi of prayer wheels and monks sarongs and idols without number. So much so in fact that the Valley of Katmandu with a hindu Temple at most Corners and a Buddhist stupa in every Field is known As the Vale of the gods and attracts pilgrims from Tibet and India no mean feat when you consider the mountains in Between. Katmandu itself sprawls at the level across the Green bullied Valley surrounded by the Foothills and dominated by the icy five mile High peaks of the Himalayas. This is the Home of the Sher Pas those Broad tireless men of the mountains and of the gurkhas whose exploits As British troops need no retelling. And it was the Birthplace both of the Buddha and of Sita heroine of the hindu epic the i Ramayana. J you approach Katmandu j from the Airport Over a Broad sweeping new Highway where Mountain women Are Labouring mightily in the pay of China which is constructing the High Way to the Borders of Tibet. But once in the City you come to a Higgley Pigg Ledy collection of narrow streets and old tem 1 e s and open Fields and Nepal has Only been open to visitors since 1954, when a Road was completed from India and despite the Impact of the mod Ern world it remains largely a museum of rustic almost medi Eval Charm particularly in the Mountain villages. For the Best villages of course you have to do a Little walking. They Aren t on the main roads. Indeed they Aren t on any roads. But trekking sup plies maps and advice Are readily available. So incidentally is hashish so much so that at rundown Coffee shop called the Eden inn the specially of the House is hashish pie. Not to mention pot roast. Next on the Road to Mandalay.
