Are hopeful of finding Wilkinson walked out of the mine Portal first his Knees wobbling. He Wras supported by two Burly miners. His wife Francis 27, jumped up and Down excitedly in front of him but the Miner blinded by the Light scarcely seemed to see her As he was led to a wait ing ambulance. The husky Flory also had a dazed expression As he was led from the mine. But he suddenly recognized his wife Myrna 18, and swept her into his arms. After they were found Wil Kinson and Flory walked with their rescuers to the Bottom of a ventilation Shaft nearly half a mile away. Flory was hauled up first through a hoist Midway through the mine Given a Quick Check by a doctor and told he could continue on up to be reunited with his family. He refused saying he wanted to wait for his Comrade. He wailed until Wilkinson was checked. Rescuers reported that Flory and Wilkinson said they were astonished when they found that the air had suddenly become pure the Day after the disaster. They expected to be rescued Al most immediately. They opened the door and picked up the lunch pails of their dead comrades As they walked past their bodies along the Tunnel to the main hoist waiting for the rescuers who were to take five More Days to come for them. The two miners then walked out of a grim underground world of strewn with at least 36 swollen bodies As a fire was still burning at the Middle level of the mile deep mine. The bodies were to have been brought up sunday but a flare up of the fire forced the delay and plans now called for them to be removed later today. The fire which struck Down their comrades with smoke and poisonous Carbon monoxide also Cut the electricity Supply the water lines and monday one of the main lifelines to survivors the compressed air line. But the Day after the fire the mine company succeeded in forcing a if rent of fresh air Down the ventilator Shaft which was eventually to become the escape Hatch for the two survivors. Mine officials believe Wilkin son and Flory found a pocket of fresh air possibly by closing a heavy Iron door in their Tunnel. Full details of How they sur Vived for seven Days have not been released. Propped up in their Hospital Beds they told How they passed their 175 hours underground by braiding lengths of blasting wire. It was something to do with your hands so you would t go out of your said Wilkin son. Flory said he would seek new employment and never go Down in a mine again. No added his wife Myrna. Their headlamps burned out after a few hours Flory re called. The Only illumination they had was the lamp of a motor driven rail car on the tracks along the rough floor of the mineshaft feet below the surface. The first they knew someone was coming for them was when Flory saw a Light. We thought we heard voices and then we began to think our ears were playing tricks on Flory said. I thought maybe we were seeing Wilkinson said. Wilkinson said that during the ordeal they would eat just a Little in the morning then we d drink water the rest of the we talked a he added. We prayed a Wilkinson said he might go Back to the mines despite his narrow escape. You gotta Meka his wife Frances said. If he wants to go Back he Wayne Kanack the Crew chief of the four Man Rescue team said the two miners were in an area near a a refrigerator air conditioner. They had the Best water in the mine and they used he said. Flory said it was the will of god that we got out. We had Given up Hope just about the hour we were Wilkinson added we panicked a couple of times. I d get depressed and then he would Settle me Down and then he d get depressed and i d settled him Down. We could have held out or three More Days. We kept tapping our pipes to let those above know we were Okay. We kept turning the motor Light on and both men said they did not know if there were other survivors but they thought there was some Hope. Flory and Wilkinson were resting beside their truck at the when the Rescue party heard tapping on the pipes and saw the dim Light of the truck ahead. Asked How they were Able to escape the fire and bad air which had killed their seven mates Flory said we got our Respirator and moved out of the smoke and just stayed away from the mine officials said they thought the two survived by getting Well away from the Shaft of the Central hoist which was carrying smoke and bad air from the Middle of the mine Down to the Bottom. The other workers in the Tun Nel remained too close to the Shaft mine officials said.
