Tote company that builds net police have the right idea but the wrong animals. When they want to practise painless Crown control they should use elephants. That s what the police Here do and they have remarkably few prob lems. Nobody who is eyeball to Eye Ball with an elephant succumbs to any Forward surge. Nobody pokes one with a stick or socks it with a placard. And nobody but nobody gets out of line when an elephant s big feet come pacing past. One s toes get tender at the Mere thought of intruding. As for riots they just Don t happen. Nobody wants to get an elephant upset. Not when they re Between him and wherever he s going. Not even when they re Only Between him and wherever they suspect he s going. I can certify that because i be just been part of a crowd being controlled by the animals. This crowd was t hostile. Quite the contrary. It was Here to enjoy a great annual. Event an elephant Rodeo. But it was Pushy to. The Point where it threatened to engulf the events. Then the elephants came into action. One animal came along the front of the crowd edging it Back it did t have to do any thing much just March. That was enough. When it was far enough away i stepped out of the press and Knelt Down to take a photograph of it coming Hack. But just As i got it in focus i Felt a tap on my shoulder. It was a Soldier one of the Many acting As policemen in this Jungle province. He motioned me Back into the crowd. I indicated the camera and the approaching animal. He Shook his head emphatically and gestured behind me so i swivelled to see what the prob Lem was and looked up at the biggest elephant in the world. There it stood swaying slightly two policemen on top and its front feet within a centimetre of my right shoe. For one ghastly moment i stared up at the bloodshot eyes special mama Burger offer expires May 14 at participating Winnipeg drive ins and Coffee shop Canada discover its diversity College Antver Staire Clendon collage Canada s a land of diverse groups linked by history and geography but Little understood even by its own people. I was impelled not just by re flex action though there s nothing for toning the muscular system half so effective As the suspicion you May be impeding an elephant but by the Mem Ory of past events. A few years ago one of the animals at the Rodeo permanently past Tensed a photo Grapher who Knelt in front of him to take a picture. There s no Way an elephant is going to step on you if he can help it but the tourist made the mistake of shooting a Flash right in the elephant s Eye and the blinded beast blundered into him. Or on to him. For a while it looked As if the incident had terminated not Only the tourist but the Rodeo. Authorities understandably did t think they could attract visitors by mashing them. But then it was decided it had been a Freak Accident unlikely the had enough Kellogg Idaho a i be had said Ron Flory a 28-year-old Silver Miner who never has known an other Trade. To taking gov. To happen again which is True and the annual affair should go on. Which is Good news for tourists for nowhere else in the world Are you Likely to see anything like it. Surin province which lies some 260 Miles Northeast of Bangkok in the Jungles of thai land is one of the few spots left on the Globe where wild elephants Are still rounded up and trained for service. Until a few years ago the big beasts were used for transportation and labor Here the tamed animals Are sent to work in the lumber forests of North Ern Thailand but now their major function is to help in the capture of their wild Kindred. And when their owners get a Chance they bring them in to this Rodeo. Officially of course it s called an elephant round up not a Rodeo. But that s hokum. There s no Way they re going to Loose real wild elephants amidst a or people. Not if they like people. Instead they used half tamed ones to demonstrate what Hap pens out there in the surround ing Jungle. Riding their tamed beasts they Loose the others and get them running Down the Centre of the Field then use huge ropes and heavy nooses on Long handles to trip and entrap the runaways. V needless to say the whole operation would end up in a tangle of trampled thais if it weren t for the tamed elephants who use their bulk to Stow Stop and control the Cap Tives. But that s Only one event in the Rodeo which has to be one of the world s great tourist shows. Certainly there Aren t too Many other places you la see 150 elephants cavorting. They run races and compete in agility picking up Small Kerr s funeral Chapel. 120 Adelaide Street Winnipeg 2, Manitoba Chapel office 943-6688 objects and obedience show the heavy work they can do with logs Parade and Chase ponies take people for rides and demonstrate their work in War. In their Battle formation ornamented and armoured they re about As formidable and Fantas tic a sight As you d want to encounter. And the Spee d of the scouting parties comes As a Shock considering the bulk of the beasts. Certainly one would t want to be an enemy foot Soldier caught out there in front. In fact an elephant running Flat out is a sobering sight even from the sidelines. It s something you just Don t see in the course of a Normal lifetime. In Captivity they have no room and in the wild they have no reason. But Here they have a huge Field and the urging of their Mah outs. So they move lifting their big legs and covering the ground at an incredible Pace so fast in fact that it s hard to believe. For Sale 1970 Olds Delta 88, 4 or. H.t., can be seen at Laws towing Siva .
