I o by Casimes Carter London special _ Canada s prestige in the world o Ballet was at stake at a gala performance Given by Toronto s National Ballet of Canada wednesday evening at the Lon Don coliseum where it began a two week season in the pres ence of her Royal highness Princess Anne. The capacity audience included a substantial number of standees among them this re viewer and a Canadian Friend. Seated in the Royal Box were Princess Alexandra and prime minister Edward Heath. In the audience were Many distinguished persons in the political and artistic Fields and attending the after show on stage recep Tion were Erik Bruhn world famous dancer recently retired and Robert help Mann for Many years leading dancer and choreographer of the Royal bal let. After a shaky beginning in Peter Wright s the Mirror walkers caused by first night jitters the company went on to give a most commendable performance of the bournonville classic la sylphide. In Between guest artists Marcia Haydee and Richard Cragun of the Stuttgart Ballet provided some spectacular dancing in John Crank s legend. The National Ballet one of Canada s three major Ballet companies has chosen to per form the classical repertoire. La sylphide not to be confused with the Koine Les sulphides with the Chopin music is one of the oldest of the romantic bal lets still being performed. It is closely related to the Ballet Giselle with its Story of unrequited love and tragic ending. How Ever love skjold s music has not the nostalgic Appeal of Adam in Giselle nor the Bour Nonville choreography As much Charm although Erik Bruhn has done some revision to make it More acceptable to modern audiences. The Story is concerned with two humans Effy and James who Are celebrating their betrothal. James however becomes enamoured of an elusive creature of the spirit world la sylphide and is is t r a n g e d from his Fiancee through the Wiles of an evil Witch who supplies him with a magic Scarf by which he is to secure the love of the spirit. However it causes her death and Effy marries Gurn a pea Sant lad and James loses everything. Veronica Tennaut Prima bal Lerina of the National Balle taking the part of la sylphide is a dancer of sound technique and an elegant line. She has As Surace and style and gave the role the ethereal Quality required. Neils Kehlet dancing the part of James the unfaithful Lover is a member of the Royal danish Ballet where he has performed the part Many times. He is a Dan eur Noble of the highest rank and partnered the two female leads with Assurance and at the same time gave a formidable display of technique in his leaps and turns. Colleen Cool As Effie the betrothed showed a sure tech n i q u e and dramatic ability. Celia Franca artistic director of the National Ballet made a Token return to the London stage As Madge the wicked Witch in a sinister characterization. The corps de Ballet redeemed itself in its performance during this Ballet especially in the charming scottish reels in the first act and in the Forest scene of the second. Legend choreographed by John Crank artistic director of the Stuttgart Ballet to Wien Zawski s music for Solo violin and orchestra is a Pas de Deus pitched in a Low key in keeping with the mood of the music. However or. Crank has Given the dancers some spectacular Steps and lifts affording them an Opportunity for some Bra Vura dancing. Marcia Haydee and Richard Cragun do this with Assurance and style and the audience responded with bravos. Peter Wright s the Mirror walkers set to Tchaikovsky s first orchestral suite is a Ballet Damper put on weekend Winni Eggers May expect a warm but perhaps wet Start to the Long Holiday weekend.
