Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - May 23, 1972, Winnipeg, Manitoba Winnipeg Friss tuesday May 23, 1972 Nixon confronts Brezhnev continued held their first formal Summit talks for nearly two hours today. It was expected that the afternoon meeting would involve far fewer just Nixon Brezhnev and one or two aides. One of the initial agreements it was Learned would at joint american soviet health re search efforts with emphasis on combating such major diseases As cancer and heart trouble. The second would provide for collaboration in helping to clean up the global environment. The formal opening of the Summit took place in a cordial atmosphere in what the participants called a search for path ways to world peace. Moments after a far away chime sounded the hour of 11 . 3 . Nixon and Brezhnev entered the ornate Catharine Hall in the grand Kremlin Palace from opposite sides of the big room and Lead ing others in their delegation met at the Midway Point for handclaps Small talk and smiles. Once the two leaders sat Down facing each other across the conference table Nixon was flanked by state Secretary Wil Liam Rogers and Henry Kis Singer the president s assistant for National Security affairs. Sitting on either Side of Brezhnev were soviet president Nikolai Podgorny and Premier Alexi Kosygin. This morning s formal open ing was to have been broadcast live by Moscow television according to soviet spokesmen who outlined the Summit to coverage in Advance. The live broadcast was cancelled at least locally in Moscow without immediate explanation. With such items As Vietnam the Middle East and strategic nuclear arms on the Agenda the negotiations promised to be Tough. But both sides made it Clear they meant business exchanging solemn pledges monday night to work together for world peace.
