They also criticized escalating costs of Hydro projects but premiered Schreyer resisted the pleas to have or. Cass Beggs appear and said the Cost differences from initial Concep Tual estimates to completion were fairly Normal. De Mcgill pc Brandon West said or. Cass Beggs would be in Manitoba about May 15 and should appear be fore the committee particularly As he signed the annual report of Hydro which is currently being discussed at the commit tee meetings. All questions concerning the Nelson River projects Are matter of intimate knowledge for the current chairman of Manitoba Hydro Leonard a. Bateman the Premier said. I know of no information or. Cass Beggs could provide which or. Bateman could he said it was Normal enough for one chief executive officer to take Over from another and events continue to Donald w. Craik pc Kiel said or. Cass Beggs testimony before the committee was somewhat different from or. A but this question was ruled out o order. He then questioned a 77 per cent Escala Tion in costs Over two years for the Jenpeo Plant and Lake win n i p e g regulation considering four per cent annually As a nor Mal growth rate for costs. The Premier said the base estimate figure was a Concep Tual estimate not a preliminary actual and comparable estimates for the Kettle rapids generating station the Chur chill River diversion and Lake Winnipeg regulation could be found in Hansard the record of legislature debates As Early As 1966. These were much exceeded in actual fact he said. Progressive conservative Leader Sidney Spivak wanted to know if All figures Given by or. Cass Beggs to the Public utilities committee were inaccurate or the Premier said he should Check transcripts of previous meetings and Hansard and he would find Many estimates of to conceptual or. Spivak wanted to know if or. Bateman s projection of billion expenditures for capital programs during the next 10 years was information a conceptual nature and not accurate or a reasonable fore some of the information would to conceptual estimating particularly projects to be built in 10 to 15 years the Premier said but Kettle rapids is no longer conceptual and Lake Winnipeg regulation is not either. "1 suspect they have gone beyond the conceptual stage for Churchill River he said or. Tel. 474-2459 mem1er Canada Deposit insurance corporation when i visited san Francisco several years ago a Friend who lives in that incredible City promised some very special chinese now there is no shortage of chinese restaurants in san Francis co. But this piece of intelligence was heartening. Any tourist could find those Neon lit eating places on Grant Street. But i had Access to one of those out of the Way treasures about which one Only hears with envy. Out of the Way it was. On a dark night we Navi gated countless tortuous alleyways and eventually came upon a Long flight of rickety greying stairs. But All of that was Okay the favorite legend of restaurant seekers is that the More inaccessible the smaller and the dirtier the place the better the food. At the top of the stairs was a six table room from which Mary Poppins would have fled in horror. Most of the tables were behind shabby curtains and it was at one of those we were seated. The menu was in chinese the waiter could t speak a word of English and when he brought the soup he stabilized the bowl by planting a grotty looking thumb splash in the Middle of it. I was delighted. The set Ting was perfect. Not so the food. I had eaten a lot of chinese food before that and i have eaten even More since. And that was the worst chinese food i have Ever choked Down. All which made me regard the legend with a somewhat jaundiced Eye. The scepticism had abated slightly when two years a Friend who knew a Friend who knew a Friend introduced us to the King Wah chop suey restaurant on Winnipeg s Alexander Street a Lovely place which has almost restored my Faith. But then King Wah does t really fit the legend. It could be described As out of the Way Only by people who patronize just the Large Well advertised chinese restaurants. It in t particularly Small and though its decor in t luxurious the restaurant is clean enough. The Only part of this family run restaurant that fits the myth is that the food is outstanding. The King Wah is one of several gastronomic Faith restorers situated on Alexander some appears to be the least promoted by local chinese food an lib Naxos. For the first months we were acquainted with the King Wah we limited ourselves to take out and to a menu which had been written Down for. Us in chinese by that Friend of a Friend. The menu included cracked crab in Black bean garlic and egg sauce Chicken Fried Rice a vegetable dish barbecued Duck and lean pork. Why we required these cantonese standbys to be written Down i can t remember. These delicious dishes we hurried Home reheated them in casseroles and ate with Delight. In subsequent months we added a few More including shrimp in Black bean and garlic sauce and King Wah chop suey. The shrimp were and Are excellent and the chop Sucy always fun loaded As it is with squid various meats and almost every conceivable kind of chinese vegetable. But we were missing the Best part. The great variety of dishes on menus in chinese restaurants causes any diner to suffer from that interesting phenomenon other table other table envy is an unquenchable conviction that whatever you be or dered in t As Good As what s on the mysterious steaming platters being carried to other tables especially those being carried to tables at which chinese Are sitting. At the King Wah As at Many chinese restau rants Many of those delectable Aren t on the printed menu. The first time we ate at the restaurant we took Down the names of the dishes we coveted and next time we ordered them. They included a beef Stew and bean cake pot which came steaming in Terra Cotta cookware and a dish with Chicken Marin ated in soy sauce. Other exceptional dishes have included Plain pan Fried shrimp the restaurant uses the shrimp that comes raw and Frozen in the Shell rather than those pre shelled pre cooked horrors that turn to rubber when heat is the Best dish we be had so far is a steamed fish covered in a delicious sauce which is heavily Flavoured with garlic and Ginger. The cracked crab at a serving and the fish around s3 depending on the size of the fish Are the most expensive dishes we have Are Well Worth their Price. Other dishes which Are lower Are generous in serving. The King Wah is operated by Man kit Wong mrs. Wong and their seven children. The restaurant in t licensed. It must be remembered that family run restau rants such As the King Wah usually Aren t geared for a Large demand. As it is the restaurant is quite Busy at suppertime 6 to 8 if you can try the King Wah at off hours. Cousins get top Mark in Portage festival Portage la Prairie Man.
