Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - April 30, 1973, Winnipeg, Manitoba Winnipeg free press monday april 30, 1973 a la View Casimir Carter ethnic groups calibre the Folk arts Council of Manitoba presented the third of ils series of monthly ethnic con certs being Given in Hie auditorium of the Winnipeg Art Gal Lery sunday afternoons. On Sun Day it was the turn of ensembles from the portuguese polish italian and israeli ethnic communities. The portuguese association of Manitoba Folk group directed by Manuel Mota proved to be an agreeable Surprise. First of All it had an ensemble of 10 couples and third included 10 males which is remarkable in deed and it performed with zest and . Costumes were Atli Acline and i would As sume authentic. The girls wore Black Pill Box hats with red Satin Mantilla hanging behind while blouses checked skirts and red embroidered aprons while the boys wore White shirts Black pants reaching below the Knees and red sashes. They performed in Barefoot three dances from the fishing Village of Nazare. The first was Gay and sprightly with intricate footwork danced in various formations with hand clapping at intervals the second a twirling dance in fast polka rhythm with the dancers linking arms and the Tempo growing faster and faster ending at a dizzy Pace and finally a Beach dance Wilh a caller calling Oul the different formations. Accompaniment was provided by accordionist Garcia Matias and two Harmonicas played by Jose Vieira and Filipe Fonseca. Sang iwo portuguese songs the first in Praise of Lisbon and the second a love song. Miss Pires sings expressively and her voice projects Well but its intimacy was lost by Over amplification. She was nicely accompanied by Joao Santos on the accordian. Henryk Lorene s polish youth dancers Skry have never been in better form. Their colourful costumes made up for Lack of decor. They performed four dances the first the Krako Wiak in two four time orig nates from the City of Krakow and is danced at weddings religious holidays and festivals. In was Given a spirited and Lively performances by eight couples. The second the Lowicz Waltz was. Gracefully danced by 10 charming girls. Then came a Medley of dances from the Rzeszot Region. This include the Cebulka or onion dance in three eight time the Krzyzak or Cross dance in slow three four time the Zacok a fiery flirtatious dance with stamping o feet and finally ended with return to the onion dance they ended with the Trojak a dance performed by High groups with iwo girls and a boy in each group. The italian Canadian league Folk dancers directed by Angl la Lake gave a Fine perform Ance of their Tarantella variations. These Are Lively dances which Are said to Ward off the effects of the Poison of a Tartu la spider. Costumes worn by the girls consisted of White dresses with Black bodices am Deco rated Wilh coloured band along the Bottom. Their firs dance performed by eight Cou pies with gaily coloured handkerchiefs was danced Wilh Procci Sion and deft footwork. In the second the three girls use their tambourines with Good Al feet and their portion of the program ended with five Cou pies weaving various formations of ground patterns and again using their tambourines effectively. The Sarah sommors Chai Folk ensemble is one of the most polished groups in the Folk arts Council of Manitoba and can always be counted on to give a performance of close o professional standards. They Are to be complimented in the accompaniment they provide Vith their nine piece band con i s t i n g of electric guitars brass winds accordian and Drums under the direction of Miriam Breitman. The dancers directed by Nenad and Jill Jirotka reflect their Balletic background in the dances which hey have created for the dancers which Are basically israeli Steps but May have lost some of their original flavor l heir first number taste o manna danced by eight girls received its first performance and was beautifully executed and with perfect precision. Cos Umes of White and yellow were attractive. This was followed by a vocal duet my Lovely Apple y a Good looking couple who Sang with sincerity. Their pro ram ended with the sephardic suite a group of songs and dances reflecting the influence of the Spanish on the jewish population of Spain. Costumes consisted of open skirts will ruffles. Castanets were used with the musical accompaniment and stamping and clicking of heels predominated. This was indeed a perform Ance of High calibre and the overflow audience respondent Vith enthusiastic applause. The next performance sponsored by the Folk arts Council of Mani Oba will take place on sunday May 13th, featuring scottish English Irish and hungarian groups. As the Canadian music com petitions extend from Quebec to Alberta each province has a committee whose responsibility it is to provide the local management and the Manitoba committee was headed by its chairman prof. Leonard Isaacs. In a Brief ceremony at the end of the competitions on sat urday evening the National vice president Helene Stevens introduced prof. Isaacs who announced the local committee was Able to guarantee the expenses of the five competitors who had been picked for the finals. Or. Only one competitor tried the highest Competition that of the International stepping Stone Section. Judith Pringle of bran Don survived the first Elimina lion achieved a second place showing in the second Elimina Tion concert and made a Fine certificate. The general director speaking of the violins Victor Schultz said that in 10 years they had not heard such extraordinary perfection in Vio Lin playing. To qualify for a first place certificate and become a finalist a competitor must achieve 90 or More Marks. As each j u d g independently their average was taken.
