Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - May 1, 1973, Winnipeg, Manitoba Winn rec free press tuesday May 1, 1973 a Lle Yiew by Itou Ald Gibson Riccardo gives file rental Ai part of festival Manitoba under the Aegis of depart ment of tourism and cultural James Biccard violinist presented recital on Mon Day evening in the auditorium of the planetarium Complex. He was assisted by Irmgard Baerg pianist in the context of sesame Street the program consisted of b s Bartok Beethoven Brahms and Bach in that order. James Zuccardo joined the Winnipeg symphony orchestra As principal second violin last year and this was a Welcome Opportunity to her him in Reci Tal. He is a Fine player with an assured technique. He plays Well in time and was at his Best in romantic music so that the sonata in d minor opus 108 of Brahms was the most attractive performance. The whole sonata unfolded with great Power and Beauty. The fascinating pedal Point development in the first movement came off in first rate style. Both piano and violin were beautifully integrated Here and the adagio that followed was beautifully lyrical. The third movement was excellent with its elfish Charm and the last Presto had splendid Power. The Kreutzer sonata of Beethoven was technically very Well done. We Felt that the Presto of the first movement needed to be a bit More Appassionato and the second subject seemed to need More sustained warmth. In this respect we feel that neither player was to blame but the Hall with its non resonance was the culprit. The variations were very Well phrased just needing a Little More space. The final move ment was very successful and had a Fine rhythmic drive. This recital had opened with bar Tok s rumanian Folk dances. We seem to have heard these dances so often in different guises that another perform Ance even As Good As this was still gave the impression that they Are hackneyed. As encore or. Liccardo gave a finely shaped performance of the Saraband from Bach s a minor suite for violin alone. Throughout the program miss Baerg showed an excellent sense of style and was a worthy Collaborator at the piano. In the last week we have heard chamber concerts in two Small Halls this one and the Art gallery. They Are both excellent for speech but we find that string Lone is not enhanced by either. This is a great pity because downtown Winnipeg has apparently lost use of its Only other Small Hall that in St. Mary s Academy. If chamber music is to flourish in Winnipeg we Are in parlous state. The answer would be to re activate the Small Hall of the Winnipeg auditorium in the Early 30 a we went with professor Frank Allen to test the acoustics of this Hall and we found them excellent. This review ends with an a peal to tin minister and his deputies in the department of tourism and cultural affairs to set the wheels of government rolling to the end that win nines musicians May be assisted to make music and not have to make music in spite of the Halls. No strike services backed a private member s Resolution to the effect that essential services should not be interrupted by labor disputes was a. Proved by the Manitoba legit Ture monday evening. The Resolution gave no Indica Tion who this should be accomplished and a government amendment to the progressive conservative Resolution stated that free collective bargaining tended to produce less disruption than forced settlement of disputes. Mines minister Sidney Green cited occasions where forced settlement of disputes had not worked particularly during the Public service strike in Quebec a year ago. If it were possible to legislate that there be no strikes and such legislation would work it would be adopted by every jurisdiction in the world regardless of political philosophy or. Green said but it does t work. Harry j.
