A report by the 12-member committee is being circulated among members of the City boards who will meet May 10 to discuss it and voice their approval or disapproval. In the report the committee which was set up in november 1071, and co sponsored by All City school boards 10 divisions for City the Manitoba association of school trustees unanimously opposed any form of total amalgamation to match Winnipeg s me City. The report Stales that a single school Board would increase educational costs by millions of dollars and Cut Down Community involvement in schools. Instead the committee looks favourably although not unanimously on the possibility of fewer and larger school div Sions in the City and suggests this might Cut costs and improve educational services. The report presents four alternative ways of reorganizing the 10 divisions into five or six of approximately equal size. Each involves combining some divisions or parts of divisions with others and would mean some divisions would disappear. The optimum size of an administrative unit is probably an enrolment of to students depending on geographical cultural and educational needs the report states. This year there Are about students in schools in the Winnipeg area with the Winnipeg school division having the largest population of students the committee also supports the concept of a regional Agency for co operative education in the City and suggests the department of education be asked to prepare legislation enabling such an Agency to be set up. The committee s report will be presented to the minister of education after All schoo boards have examined it. However its recommendations Are not binding.
