The orchestra was conducted by its music director Micro in Man the assisting artist was the Well known violinist Alfredo Campoli. The program consisted of two works Only the Elgar concerto for violin and orchestra and the symphony no. 9 in e minor by Dvorak. The concerto is a work of. Nohle proportions giving the violin free rein and it also gave the orchestra opportunities for highly charged Emo Tion of a very personal kind. Saturday s performance was somewhat variable. Much of it was extremely Beautiful but there were a number of places where the violin intonation was rather suspect. For Many years we have listened to Alfredo Campoli s impeccable playing and basked in the warmth of his Lovely tone so it is Melan Choly to record a number of lapses from die path of secure intonation. The slow movement with its sensitive tunes was a thing of great Beauty and the mysterious cadenza in the finale was quite fascinating. Some of the orchestral playing was extremely Well done. In the first movement the Middle Rotor Nello was really supercharged emotionally. 9n occasion we Felt that the wind played Loo loudly and the heavy brass lacked the Quality that Elgar delights in calling for Nobil Montc. For All that Elgar s felicitous phrases were lovingly stroked by the soloist and the Bravura passages were impressively played. After the intermission we listened to a glowing performance of the new world symphony. This was in Many ways quite first rate. The strings and Solo woodwind played extremely Well. We again Felt that the brass occasionally interpreted the Forte passages As Fortis Imo and the horns when part of a quiet wind chord were on the loud Side. To their credit they had excellent Security and splendid drive. The wind solos in the Largo particularly the Cor Langlais were Beautiful and air. Gamba wisely kept the whole Largo from stagnating by just enough movement. The Canon in the scherzo was most deftly played and the whole work proved to be very exciting. Its color and warmth were inescapable and thus the sea son ended brilliantly.
