With a new name in has a new Defini Tion of its role to match the lexicon of the business age. It s ill charge of Quality control. Morita has been at the Burns Plant for two and a half months indicating the Deal was concluded sometime before it was announced in the legis lature. The contract Between the japanese company and the province was signed april 16 following an agreement reached in december. On april 24, agriculture minister Sam Yuskiw announced another potential Market for Manitoba hogs. He said a los Angeles com Pany was a prospective million customer. He said the hog marketing Board had sent several pork ship ments on a trial basis to the american company which could result in the Sale of processed hogs annually. The contract hinges on continuity of sup ply he said. The trial shipments were to measure the service to a competitive area to see whether an import product can be sold at a Premium Price and still capture a Good share of the Market. The american firm would be Selling the Manitoba pork on the Domestic mar Ket. The marketing association Lias been a subject of de Bate in the legislature with charges that it does not represent hog producers be cause most of its Board was not elected but appointed by the minister. Increased sales could result in indication of How the Agency is being accepted by the producers. Oats dust Etc to meet the Price set by the commission. If there is no agreement a producer can Appeal and Send a Sample to be tested at the Grain commis Sion Laboratory in Winnipeg. Testing of samples includes baking of bread in a variety of mixes and conditions. Thousands of ways of testing have been developed b y the Laboratory technicians. The Grain commission is also responsible for elevator inspection and tracing infestation to its source. Wild Oats remains a major problem. Or. Cobbe said the commission has instigated a program it Hopes will bring the problem under control. Cobbe said with rail abandonment the country will require better roads. Tests Are being conducted to see what can be accomplished by longer Grain hauls by truck. He said the rail abandon input decisions create a Multi million Dollar problem in subsidizing some lines. Air. Cobb said there is no indication the commis Sion would get into the trucking Field even indirectly but it could get involved in a study of trucking costs and it is very concerned with the economic effect of rail abandonment on producers.
