8 Winnipeg free press tuesday May 8, 1973 Canada France to build Telescope by Jeff Mahru tigers Ottawa Canada s. Astronomers have finally been Given a present by the Federal government they have been wailing More than half a Century to receive a spanking new Multi million Dollar Telescope. The Federal Cabinet has approved Canadian participation in building a Sis million joint Canada France Telescope on top of a Mountain on the main is land of Hawaii. Observers Here note that the decision by Ottawa represents a n important Milestone for Basic research generally and astronomy specifically in Canada. The Telescope is the first federally funded instrument since the 72-Inch Telescope was built in Victoria in 1918. It is also one of the largest expenditures on Basic big science in this Many years. The 144-Inch Telescope should be completed atop Mauna Kcal by 1978, offering French Cana Dian and hawaiian astronomers an enviable View of most of the less explored and therefore More exciting Southern sky. The site is considered to be possibly the Best now available in the world for Infra red observations since the Observatory will be so High at almost feet above sea level and since the air there is so dry. I Canada and France will share the in million construction costs and the estimated million per year operating costs equally. The University of Hawaii will provide the site and the support facilities. In return it will receive 15 per cent of the night viewing time. This leaves Canada and France with 42.5 per cent of the viewing time apiece. While the estimated Cost of the Telescope is slightly greater than the original million now rather than million last year Canadian Industry will participate to the tune of 50 per cent under this latest arrangement which still must be accepted by France. Canadian Industry will be involved in the construction of the computerized Telescope controls and of the main Observatory structures such As the dome. The mechanical parts of 1 the Telescope will be made in France. The huge Blank for the 144 i n c h Mirror was made ii France but will be polished to its final shape at the Dominion Astro physical Observatory in Victoria . The government approval of he Canada France Telescope on culminates a rather frustrating struggle by the country s astronomers to obtain Federal participation in or total ownership of a Large optical Cle scope. In some cases As a result of n f i g h t i n g among the astronomers Canada has consid c r c d and then rejected a lumber of telescopes in recent years. The most controversial was the Queen Elizabeth ii Tele Cope a Canadian owned instrument which was supposed to be located on it. Kobau in . It was cancelled by Ottawa in 19li8 when astronomers could t agree among them selves whether it was really needed. There was a subsequent offer to participate in a chilean Tele scope project with the u.s., but this lapsed. Most recently there was a proposal for an All Canadian Telescope perhaps located in South Africa or Chile. But this was set aside i favor of the cheaper idea of cooperating with the French.
