H is a program with a Dif Ference and that difference is people who arc committed to making summer involve ment 73 a continuing pro Gram and volunteers who prove that the program is a rewarding one. The program operated in Winnipeg successfully last year but when provincial government funds through the step student Tempo Rary employment program were Cut off in the fall the program did t fold. Two enthusiastic employees Beverley English and Marcia Thompson kept the Volunteer program alive Dur ing the Winter at the univer sity of Manitoba and the uni a Cisily of Winnipeg. Already this summer sum in c r involvement 73 has placed More than 145 Volun Teers with various agencies and Llin cry for More Volun Teers is still being heard from agencies who desperately need Young people to help with the handicapped the elderly or with Young people. We be got the Job open Ings but when it comes to Volunteer work we Al ways seem to have More openings than volunteers to fill them As far As we know we re the Only organization that handles youth Volun Teers and places them in agencies throughout Winnipeg the program originated in 1072 with the Winnipeg Volunteer Bureau and in its first year of operation Man aged to place 250 Volunteer workers with various Agen cies in Winnipeg. At present the program deals with 41 agencies scattered throughout Winnipeg and places volunteers in Al most every imaginable line of Volunteer work. We had More Organiza Lions to work with last explained Beverly English a second year arts student at the University of Winnipeg who worked with summer involvement last year along with Larry harder a University of Manitoba student and Marcia Thompson. But tins year we chose the agencies we wanted to work with. We prefer to have organizations that know what to do with volunteers. Last year there were some Agen cies who got volunteers but 1 i d n t know How to use miss English said. Agencies such As the Day Nursery Centre and the society for crippled children and adults arc using summer involvement 73 Volunteer workers this year and arc More than pleased with the results. At the Day care Centre 336 Flora Avenue two Young puppeteers were treating youngsters at the Nursery la a h a 1 f h o u r Long puppet show. The show was developed by Sid Shapira Tony Bris Tow Colin Kovacs and Pete Connelly. The whole idea behind the show is to get the kids in said 15-year-old Sid before a performance thurs Day at the Nursery. We Don t try to put across any messages or make the show a lesson like thing. It s mainly to entertain the he said. While Sid and Tony were entertaining youngsters a t the Nursery Lynn Goldring and Joan mar Wilch both is were working with a group of crippled teenagers in Charleswood. Lynne volunteers two Days with the crippled children while Joan works two Days with the Charleswood group and three Days wit i deaf children. Summer involvement 73 recruits 14 to 25 year Olds for Volunteer work and begins its recruitment program in h i g h schools. School recruiters Laurie Lamb and Don Slough were responsible for school recruitment where the largest portion of the program s volunteers come from. Each Volunteer is inter viewed and is presented with certain Job descriptions. Alter a particular Job is Cho sen the Volunteer is placed with the appropriate Agency. The main problem in moving into a year round program is determining the form it should take. Mrs. Frankemolle and Shirley Borden the society s coordinator volunteers help volunteers work with the children at the Charles Wood Day camping program a Pilot project tins summer. The response to the pro g r a m has been mrs. Borden said in an inter View thursday. We have groups that come to the Camp on Charleswood Road once a there arc so Many crippled adults want ing to go to Day Camp that the society had to split the group of 40 into two 20 camping groups.
