Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - July 16, 1973, Winnipeg, Manitoba Winnipeg free press corporation limited monday july 16, 1973 2nd class Mill registration number 02m by and Mullen it May be summer but Many Manitoba students Are still being educated. Close to elementary students from across the province Are attending special summer schools this year and discovering that learning can be fun. The summer education program a novel educational project sponsored by the youth secretariat Mani Toba department of colleges and universities affairs is designed to explore various alternatives to Standard methods of teaching. This summer Many students will have an Opportunity to improve their skill in subjects such As mathematics science geography history music and Art and actually enjoy doing it. One reason is that Many of the informal class ses Sions Are held outdoors rather than in the restricting confines of a classroom. Then of course some of the program s goals Are different. Such terms As education Al enrichment and re motivation indicate that the of this particular program is not simply to dish out a Bunch of facts and figures but to help a student find himself in what is often a very confusing situation. In addition to the elementary level program a work study program involving 80 Grade 11 students is also Well under Way. Students selected on the basis of financial need interest in the program and certain acad Mic weaknesses Are tutored in one or two subject area by a University student counsellor again on an informal Low pressure basis. Advancements such As this provided that they As successful As i think they la be should go a Long Way toward proving that established traditional teaching methods Aren t always the Best. Just As there Are Man different types of students there should be a wide variety of approaches to teaching. That s the Only was we can be assured that each student receives the Maxi mum Opportunity to realize his full creative potential. Anyone who watches even a couple of hours of television a Day is subjected to doubt about his mouthwash and underarm deodorant while at the same time he s told that if he in t driving a Brand new 1973 zip Mobile he s totally out of the picture. Young people especially Are constantly forced into Deci Sions such As choosing Between a new led Zeppelin up because All of the music magazines proclaim that it s an absolute must and an equally Good record which hardly anyone knows about. Of Well As Long As most of us manage to maintain enough intelligence and common sense to reach decisions without being influenced by out Side factors i Trust that everything will work out Fine.
