Winnipeg free Hess. Tuesday july 17, 1973 computer speeds braille printing by Gary sc1ierba1n free pros staff writer fewer than 100 Manitoba High school and University Stu dents Are Blind. The great majority of Stu dents May never give books a second thought the teachers hand out the textbook for the year and the student returns it when the school term is finished. Presumably the books arc up to Date. New copies Are usually available immediately to replace lost or books. But for the Blind things Aren t that simple. The Supply of books in braille is generally limited. Copies Aren t always up to Date. When a new textbook is introduced into the school sys tem it could be a year before a braille copy will appear. For the Blind there is a continuing series of barriers and frustrations i education. That is Why the University of Manitoba s programming course of the Blind in the com Puter Centre is All important. The Centre is improving ser vices for the Blind especially in the availability of textbooks on Short notice. The improve ment is due to the use of the computer. With the use of an Mit brai emboss books Are typed in the Normal Way then fed into the computer and then the braille is embossed on Continu-1 text. The following printouts course for the Blind the history recounts the various at tempts at producing readable Type for the Blind Endig with the system devised by the Frenchman Louis braille in the lath Century. Braille introduced a six Dot system which has 63 combinations. This allows for the Lel ters of the alphabet the 10 numbers and various combinations in the Grade 2 braille system for contraction of fre Quelly used words. The Grade 1 system does not have contractions. The most widely use process in transcribing braille has been the slate and stylus the Sale is a hinged Meta strip into which cards o Small sheets of braille paper Are inserted and the stylus punches out the raised braille to. There have been braille Type writers invented but always he process in producing books has been a very Long one. With the constant updating of school textbooks it was Neces sary to implement a process whereby books could be Tran scribed in a Shorter period this has been made possible by the addition of the com Tuter. Because the data is on Lape a Programmer has Only to alter the tape at the Point of change and not the Complete charges Congress deceived continued Ous form sheets. To understand the significance of this process the computer programmers at the University have released a Short history of braille transcription. Written by prof. Mike Doyle director of the computer Centre and Donald keeping supervisor of the programming court acquits woman North Battleford husband after he threatened t will include the revision the computer Mcleod has also made in possible to Tran scribe French novels and other materials into French braille. Professor Paul Fortier of the Romance languages depart ment at the University originated the idea. For an average text it takes about 10 hours to print with present equipment. What the j programmers Are investigating is a ism Printer which will do the same Job in an hour. With the attachment the Ionly limitation of output of braille books would be the number and Speed of the typists who feed the information Inlo the computer. New books would probably be available within a week and reprints overnight. Have stated.
