The first pouring of Concrete took place Here tuesday for the Multi million Dollar Manitoba Hydro control Structure which will eventually stabilize water Levels on Lake Winnipeg. The massive project on the Northern tip of Lake Winnipeg which also includes construe Tion of a 168-megawatt Power station began in late 1971 with the granting of an interim licence to Manitoba Hydro for regulation of the Lake Between 711 715 feet above sea level. We re perfectly on schedule John Van gent Mani Toba Hydro s resident manager of the Jenpeo project said after a tour of the construction site tuesday. He said some difficulty was encountered earlier in the construction of the coffer dam. The dam he said kept sinking into the Northern Muskeg until solid foundation was finally reached. At one Point he said a portion of the coffer dam i Sank about 10 feet overnight thus it took longer to build than expected. The coffer dam now is in place excavation is Well i Progress to make Way for the generating station. Or. Van gent said the control Structure should be completed on sched ule in june 1974, while the Power station is expected to be finished about two years later. About workmen arc involved in construction of the project about 600 of them at the site of the proposed control Structure generating Plant. The rest Are about 60 Miles South of Jenpeo working on the dredging of three channels that will take water out of Lake Winnipeg to stabilize Levels.
