Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - July 23, 1973, Winnipeg, Manitoba Immi or int yer pin kit. Inland Trust and savings Winnipeg free press corporation limited in Dominion Street fir monday july 23, 1973 by Andy Mallun one thing which Many canadians have in common is a belief that our Way of life is the ultimate achieved so far by Man. Afler All we do enjoy a High Standard of living along with countless mechanical and electrical devices to look after most of our needs. For years i be thought of Africa As being a some what backward land populated by pygmies and seven foot giants. Why not for years movies television and books have perpetuated the myth of Africa As the dark continent. Let me Tell you though that such is definitely not the Case. This past weekend i was fortunate enough to meet and talk with a Young Man who Only six months ago called Africa or More precisely Uganda his Home. He was one of a group of British asians who chose to come to this country when they were expelled from their Homeland. To say that i Learned quite a bit from our Conversa Tion would be the understatement of the year. I was astounded to hear that groups such As Pink Floyd and the rolling stones Are very popular in Africa and that the television stations carry everything from mod squad to Huckleberry hound cartoons along with a number of locally produced shows such As Ballet and plays. When one stops and thinks about it it s really quite amazing How things really Are so much the same around the world. Although Canada is a fascinating new country to Kirim he asked to be identified by just his first such Universal concepts As Rock music and Good old fashioned Friendship have helped him make the difficult transition from one country to another. The next time you see something like the african Queen on to Don t be misled. Rather than chopping their Way through dense Jungles Many africans Are probably relaxing around a stereo listening to Good music and perhaps dreaming the same dreams As you and i.
