Taking a map of Winnipeg and deciding that a Church be cause of its non profit Orienta Tion would be preferable she looked in the Core area of the City and made up her mind to approach Knox United. The fact that the Green space of Central Park is adjacent to the Church helped in the decision. Here was a facility near the garment and business District with convenient bus service. Armed with material prepared to Back up her Case for a Day Nursery in the area she approached or. Donald Bruce Macdonald the minister of Knox United in May lacs. She says that much of the Success of the Nursery and the service it provides to the Community could t have been pos sible without the Complete acceptance and enthusiastic sup port of or. Macdonald. Or. Macdonald did t even want to Sec the feasibility study she had prepared. Obviously he was ready for Sudi a project. He and the Church stepped in behind is. De Many. Although the Church said it would not give a direct financial commitment to the service and made the project hinge on government approval and financing the Church made a minimal charge for the facilities in the first year Andi did t charge for car taking service and utilities. With this commitment is. Demiany approached the provincial government and received its approval for a Day Nursery which would Caler to families in the area for people who needed Day care the most for their children. By Dave Blaikie Ottawa up Parlia ment begins its fourth week of the summer today with the government determined out Wardly at least to resolve the Long debated question of Capi Tal punishment. Well either pass it or Hani in for a time one government spokesman said Fri Day As maps returned to the Issue for yet another round of debate. The government offered once already to put the Issue off until fall if the three opposition parties would agree to a time limit on the two remaining stages of passage. But neither the conservatives or social credit maps would consent. So they either change their mind or we stay Here until its the spokesman said. The legislation which would restore the five year partial ban that expired last december is at report the last step before third and final Reading and the last stage where amendments can be attempted. Two proposed amendments have been ruled in order by speaker l u c i e n Lamourux. The Bill now Calls for the death penalty Only for murderers of policemen or prison guards. One amendment would sex 1 c n d Host till their victims in the process. The second would apply the death penalty to so help finance the 1976 Montrea olympics. Maps Are expected to resum work today on the capital punishment Bill but switch later in the week to the olympics legis lation. The government expects it to be approved by the end of the week. Other legislation a fair amount of it remains on the order paper but these Are the Only two Bills the government is demanding that the House Deal with before adjournment. The commons normally adjourns about the end of june but this year with the govern ment operating from a minority position business has bogged Down and the Normal schedule has gone out the win Dow. In spite of apparent govern ment determination says or Baldwin there is one Factor that could Lead to adjournment by the end of the Commonwealth conference of prime ministers scheduled to open Here aug. 2. While there is nothing to pro vent parliament from sitting at the same time the conservative House Leader says the government May be reluctant to have the opposition Sledge hammering away at its poli cies and programs in full View of so Many world leaders. The government denies that the conference will affect the i timing of and prefer outdoors Victoria up Dave cond Tinc murderers and those King and Dave Tapp two convicted of aircraft hijacking Young graduates of the same causing death. Geography class at the univer without a time limit predicts conservative House Leader Gerald Baldwin it could Lake 10 to 12 sitting Days to sity of Victoria arc off to the Yukon prospecting. However. Its not Mineral wealth they arc the we saw Venice in a Way that guaranteed the Best of several worlds by staying on the nearby resort Island of Lido one of the several islands surrounding the focal Point Lagoon served by the grand canal. On the Eastern Side of narrow Lido a Long Beach meets the Adriatic. From Tho other Side of the Island one May watch the Sun set above the Skyline on the main Island of Venice. It is a Beautiful sight but do your laundry before you arrive for a Good reason that i will explain to begin let us note and lament the wonders of Man that have earned Venice stories of decay and photos of venetians in protective face masks. For any number of bad reasons Oil companies saw fit to construct a mass of refineries on the tip of the Mainland just 20 horizon Tal smoke stacks away from Venice. To service the Industry As Well As the tourist Trade in the City the forgettable suburbs of Maghera and mistre grew up. Water to feed these Mainland communities is pumped from Artesian Wells which has the effect of lowering the Cushion of water and dirt on which Venice floats. Three or four Stone Steps at each embarking Point through out the canal system Are now under water and Ven ice floods with some regu Larity. Further the fumes from the refineries the antiquated venetian heating systems and the waste of pigeons eat away at magnificent facades. Having read such gloomy dispatches before arriving this visitor was prepared to spend his stay locked in a hotel. One night in the Mestre did not help. But Mestric is not Venice and once our rented car had crossed the mile Long causeway to the Point where autos Stop and boats begin we decided to extend our stay. Venice is still a magical City to be seen by Day or night. We did precisely that while staying on Lido just pennies and minutes by boat from the grand canal. Our slay on Lido meant swimming on spot less shores and Good food. It also offered walks on Broad avenues that can be a Relief after a Day trekking through the narrow and crowded that Lead from Church to Art gallery to boat stops on inc Lacoon. The sea is still doing a moderately Good Job of Flushing the 160 canals of Venice of debris every night but the government has finally committed itself to building the City s first sewage system. After Moro than two years of Bicker ing the italian parliament has agreed that the Safe guarding of Venice and its Lagoon is declared to be a problem of pre eminent nation a i Homo owners will be helped to convert from the polluting o i 1 heating systems to methane Gas. Money has been set aside for More ambitious preservation projects. Two out of three pigeons almost sacred creatures Here but not less filthy than their . Counterparts will be killed or relocated. On Lido we stayed at a most pleasant pension pension Paola of a Little More than a night with breakfast and Bath. Airy clean and modern the pen Sione is right next to the first class eur hotel. Note Italy classifies its lodgings from first to fourth class with deluxe ranking above first. To compare prices we slopped in Lido s deluxe hotel just across from the Casino. Be warned that the admission is per hotel Excelsior Palace is a great gatsby Type of re sort with All the amenities you would expect to find at Miami Beach and More. The Large outdoor Pool has heated sea water should you prefer not to get your feet Sandy on the hotel s Beach. But it s expensive and even the relatively Good shape of the Dollar in Italy because the lire is sagging not because the Dollar is Strong cannot ameliorate that. A double with the minimum two meals required runs about a Day. For a couple dollars you May ferry with your car to Lido from the Mainland a Good idea if you Don t want to carry Luggage on boats and through streets. If you plan to slay a few Days the Cost of inc ferry is less than parking your car at the huge lots at the end of the causeway. Of about the laundry. I like other Large cities in Italy Venice has no self service washing facilities. And at least on Lido the laundries do your clothes carefully by hand no mat Ler How Many times you explain you Don t care if those Blue jeans fade in a washing machine. We needed a Batch of dollies cleaned. As inc kind woman kept adding thousands of lire to your Bill we just watched in disbelief. The total laundry Bill amounted to Over More than the Cost of our Holczl stay on the Island. But. We had to admit the Blue jeans had t faded a Shade. After. Its not so much Complete work on the Bill and Prospect of Money As the Way bring it to a final vote. Life anal to us but this does t necessarily Dave King said mean the House will sit fan _ into August he says. Every thing is subject to change in eluding the government s mind. If the debate gets too protracted it might give up and leave the Issue to fall without a time limit. Beside capital punishment there is one other priority Bill Busy Branch Pete Borough out.
