Dianne Burrows of Regina a Lyric so Prano and pianist Jamie Syer of Calgary were heard in a joint recital. As Well As playing solos or. Syer also played for the vocal items presented by mrs. Burrows. From the 16th to the 19th centuries artists made music for Noble patrons. When Liszt inaugurated the piano recital he started a practice thai reached a Peak in the first half of this Century. But times have changed and radio records and tape recordings have made the Public recital a very risky Enterprise and Young artists cannot gain much needed experience if they cannot have the Opportunity to perform. This is Why i wish to com mend this worthwhile activity of the music teachers Assoc a an activity that has been carried on since the Ond world War years. Mrs. Burrows was billed As a coloratura. Only two of the 11 items Sung were coloratura. To be a real coloratura she needs to develop a better trill and take her extreme notes with a Little More ease. She has a Lovely voice and she can spin a Fine thread of lambent tone. She has very Good diction except for one consonant. She sings very Well in tune and is always musically intelligent. Lament she showed a Noble poignancy. I would like a stronger rhythm in Handel s let the Bright Seraphim but in this she made a Lovely contrast at let the cherubic Host. In her Brahms group mrs. Burrows i gave a Fine sweep to Heine Liebe is Gruen although it could have had More Anima t i o n Erri Heurung was quite Lovely in its expansive Beauty an d q Lieblich wan Gen produced a Lovely sound with per haps too Little urgency. In. Her opera tic group there was an honest performance of Mozart s Dove Sono. The aria Senna Mamma by Puccini was most touching in its pathos while Verdi s Caro Nome had All the notes in. Place just lacking that artless Art that should make it appear easy which of course it in t. Burrows last group had great interest. The land of dreams by Morawetz has a text Elking and the music is imaginative and dramatic. This made a Fine impression As did the simple a peal of Graham Peel s Early morning. It was pleasant to hear lab Rev s Nightingale again. I feel however that it is a sort of vocal counterpart to the fiddler s . Or. Syer had a Busy eve Ning. He has been Well taught and he has very Strong but where he scores is in his Fine sense of style this showed Well in the Brittle clarity of Prokofiev s third sonata while Ravel s vases Nobles it sentiment Les had Well con trolled Rii Bato and a real Vien Nese Charm. The Brahms rhapsody opus 119 no. 4 was splendid in a big styled Way and the inter Mez 118 no. 6 was poetic and heroic by turns. A Noc Turne by Chopin and a prelude by Rachmaninoff showed just How Well or. Syer can play rom Antic music. While he played very Well in the Brahms songs he needed a better flow in the Purcell la ment. He set the Bass at a Good Pace to Start with but then it became restless and lost that ground Bass motivation. His introduction to Caro Nome was a bit too studied As though the orchestra had Sud Denly taken the stage. It is a fact of life that a violinist carries his instrument with him a Singer does like Wise but a pianist is at the mercy of the instruments he is provided with at concerts. It is sad to report that the upper Register of saturday s piano was decidedly out of tune making chaos of some of the pianist s Best efforts. Some improvement is noted in the Hall but loud piano sounds still do not blend they just jangle.
