Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - October 5, 1973, Winnipeg, Manitoba Winnipeg free press Friday october 5, -1973 a review by Peter crossly miss Julie has lots of emotion the Winnipeg Art gallery opened its production of a gust Stridborg s miss Julie thursday evening in the chamber theatre of the gallery to an audience of about 60. The play runs one hour and 10 minutes with no intermission but seems a lot longer. In that space of time the play Wright explores the far reaches of the characters of his two main players and plumbs the Depths of their souls. In placing them at opposite ends of the social scale the play takes place in the he has set a powerful. Machine in motion. Here Are All the emotions of two protagonists one male one female unleashed under a variety of circumstances. The play progresses at first almost in the form of a character study. It is a game a Challenge of wits until the final curtain when it is All too True and realistic. Miss Julie is a play which makes disc of a great Deal of emotion. This is a Touchy Field for inexperienced actors if it is overplayed it appears Gross if underplayed mundane. Thursday evening ushered in a successful production for both director and cast. Miss Julie was played by Rory Kyle. Miss Kyle is a Fine actress who is just launching her professional career on a Broad scale. She has been around Amateur theatre circles for several sea sons and has matured beautifully on stage to the Point we saw her reach thursday this surely was a Pinnacle in her Youthful career. For the role of miss Julie miss Kyle had to summon All her talents to carry it off. The Success of the role rested solely on her abilities As an actress. She shone like a Brilliant Star in the role giving life to the words and emotions. Her buildup was Good and her emotions were Well controlled to Peak at just the right moments with just the right Impact. Miss Julie s schizoid personality was effectively drawn and realized by the talented miss Kyle. Her final scene was to a Peak of excellence it would be difficult to reach again. The dichotomy of his personality was clearly underlined and made the final scene with miss Julie a Power Ful one indeed. Bravo for a Job Well done. Kristin the Cook was played adequately but weakly by Joyce Krenz. Miss Krenz has a tendency to let a Sharp Edge in her voice substitute for Emo Tion. Against a background of carefully and finely defined and controlled emotion such As that of miss Kyle and or. Koren she did t stand a Chance. The peasant scene with six Drunken serfs was badly done and was the one blot on the production. Either. Use More peasants or Leach them How to act. The peasants were Daniel Ladell leu Ross Beverley Magis Kirsten Gruener Aln Chochinov and Rita Jamieson. Miss Julie was directed by Daphne Korol. Miss Karol is at her Best when directing mate rial such As. This. All the Power and dynamics seem to be just what she needs to create a successful production. Miss Julie was produced by Norman l. Mackay program coordinator for the gallery or. Mackay has chosen his play and director with great care. His cast has come up to expectations and the production was a Success. If or. Mackay who recently celebrated his Success with Electra can continue to choose his plays and directors and casts with As much care As he has on these last two productions he Mil be giving a Good slice of excellent . The sets and costumes de sighed by Ted Korol were excellent. Miss Juh e continues at the Winnipeg Art gallery in the chamber theatre to saturday at . Nightly. By Katie Mhz Randolph free press staff writer one of a series you can t teach a fish much about behaviour. Very few in fact Ever master such elementary aspects of protocol As proper use of a knife and Fork Lei alone which Fork to use for oysters. But you can learn quite a lot about a fish by observing its behaviour uncouth As it might be. The traditional approach to determine if a chemical or other suspected Poison is bad for a fish has been pretty dras tic toss the fish into the Poi soned water and see if it Dies. This ordeal by fire approach clearly indicates if the potion nutritionally y e 11 o w. And Green dry peas Are the same. More Subtle fish tests replace ordeal by fire is lethal but it can t Tell the whole Story. There Are chemicals which Don t kill the fish they just kill the fish s food Supply. The fish killed by the Chemi Cal. It merely starves to death. The result is still a dead fish. Other chemicals May inter Fere with a fish s ability to find food or to escape predators. The result is still dead fish. Still others May interfere with a fish s mating Jia bits. This leaves you with fish that Are alive but for this generation Only when the present fish die off there will be no Little ones to take their place. Or. Eberhard Scherer a re search scientist at the fresh water Institute on the University of Manitoba Campus is studying the effects on fish be Havior of a vide Range of pol i there Are two main reasons n to from Mercury through pesticides to Industrial wastes. The Institute a Branch of the Federal department of the environment will be offering Public Tours of the building 3 to 9 . Next Friday and 10 . To 4 . Oct. 13. He uses goldfish in some of his studies but they re Gener ally pretty stupid the re sult of years of domestication taking away the alertness com Mon to creatures in the wild. Still they Are an aquatic scientist s closest answer to the lab oratory White mice. He s More interested in his studies on Whitefish Walleye and Rainbow Trout although Rainbow Trout tend to suffer stupid Ness similar to goldfish it May be easy to listen to a Duck As nine year old Michael is doing but How do you know what it s saying the Pekin Duck was on display at the Mark Ham fair in Ontario. Markham is but one of Many Southern Ontario communities ushering in the season with fall fairs. The Mercury fed fish became More and More sluggish. Where a healthy Walleye immediately attempts to escape from anything that s Large enough hot to be frightened of him the Mercury fed fish got to the Point where they could be touched and shoved around in their tanks. He then his Walleye s reactions to differing Light conditions. Fluorescent lighting controlled by a Rheostat to per m i t gradual changes was hooked up Over the fish tanks. Normal Walleye will swim lower As the Light intensity in creases but the Mercury fed Walleye did t react at All. This kind of response can wreak havoc with a fish s life style. Some chemicals increase a Man adds a j fish s sensitivity to Light Caus Tifi Cial elements to the water ing it to swim at greater for the three species chosen. The first is that they Are economically important. The Sec Ond is the differences in their feeding habits Rainbow Trout eat insect Lar vae Whitefish eat Plankton the myriad microscopic and near microscopic life that teems in healthy Waters and Walleye forage for smaller fish such As minnows. As a result the three species will reflect different break Downs in the food chains of a Lake or Stream. Fish generally know How to Deal with unhealthy situations which occur in nature such As oxygen depletion and car Bon dioxide build up in the water. They will swim away from these. It is when that the fish is at a disadvantage in dealing with. His environment. A key advantage to deter mining Adverse effects on fish by observing their behaviour is that behaviour is a lot easier to see by a scientist observing fish on location in the wild. It requires Only a notebook and Pencil no Complex Laboratory apparatus or detailed calculations or chemical analysis. Or. Scherer is studying his fish in order to deter mine Normal healthy behaviour As Well As deviations which could be the key to sub lethal poisoning. Typically fish respond to things take amounts of Light they tend to go deeper on Bright afternoons As any dedicated Angler Mill Tell to the flow of a steam of water and to smell to help find mates grounds. Food and spawning one of or. Scherer s experiments involves three year old Walleye. One group was fed Normal shredded Pike and the other group ate shredded Pike with a High Mercury level from a Mercury polluted Lake. Over about a year on this diet the fish Mer Cury tended to have a higher death rate but other effects were noticed unspectacular at first then quite dramatic. Depths where the greater Depths of water can filter out the sunlight. This can make Hin swim in water Levels below his Normal food Supply and also expose him to new predators in the deeper water that he in t equipped to de fend himself against. Another concern of or. Scherer s is whether the fish banker wins award e. G. Stevens an employee at a Branch of the Bank of Nova has Cash award from the Institute of Canadian Bankers. N addition another eight win Peg banking students have received Fellowship Diplo Mas from the Institute the educational of the Canadian Bankers association. Is. Of 890 Mcmillan Avenue won the award for achieving honors in a banking course offered at the University of Manitoba. Can detect a poisonous sub stance ill the water and so avoid it. For this he has a Long narrow trough like tank with water coming in from both ends. The Poison can be added at one end and a fish was watched to see at what Levels he notices the Poison and whether he tries to avoid it or is attracted to it. Within the same species some fish won t notice a chem ical until the concentrations Are 100 times higher than those which another fish detects. The tests Are concentrated on Mercury pesticides and Industrial wastes. The results Are strange the Roach a european fish is strongly attracted to one lethal Poison. Sticklebacks will avoid Zinc sulphate but it does t do them much Good. They Only notice it at Levels of 30 times higher than the lethal level. Atlantic Salmon on the other hand avoid Zinc sulphate like the plague. Basically a fish is just Plain Lucky if he is capable of noticing and disliking a Man made Poison in his Waters. This gives Rise to the thought of adding something the fish clearly detects to poisons which Are Apt to find their Way into the country s Waterways. At least it would give them a fighting Chance and or. Scherer is investigating that possibility. For similar reasons Gas companies add a clearly Detec table smell to Gas so that peo ple can Tell on entering a room that there is a Gas leak. Other Wise they would never know and Many deaths resulted t rom that ignorance before the smell was added the study of behaviour a chemical Normal Pat dental meeting the Winnipeg dental nurses and dental assistants association will meet at . Tuesday in the Penthouse of Hie Winnipeg Art gallery. Does t Tell Why disturbs a fish s Tern or. Scherer is Quick to say. Other scientists at the Institute studying the fish from a More anatomical viewpoint to determine that. What it does is indicate the general Over All health of the fish. And if he s healthy and Alert it really does t matter much if he insists on using his Coffee spoon for his shrimp cocktail. Release order rescinded tour Fig Ana Powe Nui. Miss Kyle can proudly say to All the world i am an the role of Jean the Valet was ably taken by Danny Koren. Or. Koren has a Beautiful speaking voice arid a excellent stage presence. He carried the role superbly playing to miss Kyle and yet defining his own character with Subtle yet dynamic phrases and gestures. His inflections were excellent and his emotions were held in Good control. Here is not a role for weaklings or Hacks this is a role with meal in it. Or. Koren has brought Reuter Norway s supreme court thursday ordered the continued detention of two israelis arrested As accessories to the murder of an alleged Black september palestinian guerrilla agent last july. The court rescinded the decision of a lower court that had ordered the release of the Michael d o r f f and Zwi Steinberg. They were arrested in the apartment of the israeli embassy s Security officer Yigal Eyal two Days after Ahmed Boue Hiki a 30-year-old was killed i the town of Lillehammer 112 Miles North of july 21. Were charged As accessories to the murder and also under Norway s treason Laws. The supreme court said the lower court had made a mistake when interpreting the criminal code concerned in comparison with the Vienna convention on diplomatic relations. The supreme court said it understood the convention to mean that it does not forbid the remanding in custody of a person without diplomatic immunity even though he was arrested on territories under diplomatic Protection.
