Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - October 6, 1973, Winnipeg, Manitoba Winnipeg free october 1973 permanent remover sir a few Days ago i read in article entitled the great about i would like your readers to have a parallel to its title it the permanent it does not remove stains As does but it removes natural color from Finger from from Teeth and from All things it it removes Good lung tissue and replaces it with it removes voice boxes and learning in it removes it also removes Many buildings of Al sizes and it removes Many dollars which should be providing clothing Al these removals Are permanent alcohol has an equal a its the exalted cigarette when its Felix Tesarski Winnipeg Kalav thanks sir i would like to thank the citizens of the greater Winnipeg area who gave their much needed support to the x Kalay foundation on 1973 on our tag we received support from people who donated managers and store owners who allowed us on their pre radio stations which donated their time to advertise for us and Many other people who gave of their time and of it is through Public support that the Kalay foundation is Able to provide a much needed service to the Community and with this support in the future we will continue to do anyone who is interested in knowing More about Kalay is requested to phone or drop in at our storefront that is to rated at 414 main win phone lome Weir for Kalay Manitoba desert sir in the september 26 Issue of the Glenboro Gazette there appeared in part the Fol lowing comment along with the announce m e n t that German troops would train on the Shilo ranges from May to was the announcement that a portion of the desert would be designated Safe and open to tourists and seems our government is More inter ested in million to be spent at Shilo by the germans than in preserving a unique piece of territory in there int another province in Canada that has a desert like ours the above is too important to remain confined to the circulation of the Gazette and i would ask that you please pub Lish this it might thus be hoped that it would be read some of the concerned people As against those in authority such As those in the department of defence who presumably Are constitutionally incapable of having any feel Ings for nature by virtue of their Asphalt Jungle Back Mcleod Indian health work sir your articles recently regarding d Goldthorpe work in Ontario have been most talking with health workers familiar with both our setup Here in Manitoba and in they would regard the health work there Superior to ours that is in health work with the Indi an particularly in these Days when mental health care is being stressed in the Way of keeping the people in their own we seem to be pushing them into the alien atmosphere of a men Tal Hospital More than it certainly takes More time to do things the Way Goldthorpe is doing but Many of us feel that in the Long run it would Cost the government less to take More time to do Public health teach ing after winning the Confidence of the Indian Joan Klemesh Fisher mosquitoes sir the Canadian chamber of Commerce has declared War on mosquitoes we Farmers and our critters have been Tor tured by mosquitoes Ever since i can we passed resolutions in our organizations crying out for help but received we pointed out that on average there was a of on every head of Stock raised in the but we received no it was Only when the Farmers stand having their blood sucked by the mosquitoes at Home and by the Chambers of Commerce from the City and began migrating wholesale to the City that the crisis came to the Chambers you see the mosquitoes ran out of victims to feed on and followed them to the City Mike Taczynski contempt for indians sir during the after supper hour period on 26 i had occasion to View the american produced television program gun smoke on the Csc outlet Here at after watch ing same i am moved to write a letter of protest against what was shown within that pro in capsule form it held the Indian race in Complete and utter let me give you but two scene 1 an Indian comes out of a Blind drunk throwing a whisky bottle he then takes a White woman from the clutches of her Young daughter and drags her screaming into his obviously for one scene 2 about four minutes later this same Indian squats on his eats food like a finishes his meal and again comes to the White with the same a struggle develops and a Sec Ond Indian shoots the woman while the child the first Indian then picks up a knife with the intent of killing the a later part of the film reveals that such did not happen because of diversion tactics of another lets look at gun smoke from two Points of can any thinking Canadian say that we Are doing the right thing by showing such pro Grams when the material is not factually Correct can any thinking Canadian say that such scenes of Vio Lence should be the diet of our Young at Dauphin and other Points in Canada we have hundreds of Young indians in our school How can our teachers and Community workers keep Harmony Between Indian and White when All they Are trying to do is destroyed by such episodes As i have outlined i have upon occasion read where Dave Courchene and Angus Spence have used words of anguish on behalf of their people and i have let them stand however we who Are no Indian must at some Point stand and be our native people do not de serve such As i have de our Indian and also deserve Hugh Dunlop difference sir in an old copy of time i recently read an article describing the acquisition by up publications of the Montreal the article Points out the very wide Dif Ference ill salaries paid by the Star and the free hav ing moved to Winnipeg from i can assure you that there is a difference in the scope and Quality of the two papers news coverage which is at least As Large As the Dis in salary i am afraid it is a simple matter of getting what you pay Paterson Winnipeg classical music sir despite the efforts by Winnipeg press to help form a Winnipeg citizens symphony Only two extra players turned up on the first the offer of a con Ductor and use of my sym phonic Library was a waste of apparently Winnipeg amateurs Are Only interested in real easy music As some have told me my music is too much for my fair lady stuff is about the average a few do practice sym phony music but seem limited to an Odd movement and prac Tice the same stuff for weeks on we do not have to so its thursday night with Winnipeg philharmonic Al first presbyterian Church Canora and Portage Avenue Entrance on if you want a regular change of classical ring for de Don Harkness Winnipeg Worth while but with frustrations sir after serving for two years As a Board member of the seven Oaks school division i recently discovered that i would have to give up my seat simply because i am moving a distance of two Miles and my new residence will be a few blocks outside the school Dis i have no fault to find with the Basic Law which says that a candidate for trustee should be a resident of the District served by the school after election this must clearly apply to any trustee who moves out of the or who moves away from the District within a few weeks or months after taking after Al most two thirds of the full however it would seem that a trustee who moves to another part of the City might be allowed to Complete the term for which elected if pre pared to do in compliance with the Law As it stands i have submitted election fairly i do Hope however that for the future the Law May be made a Little More from this it should be Clear that i consider service on the school Board a worthwhile experience although it snot without its the seven Oaks school Divi Sion is serving a rapidly expanding population where a big problem is keeping up with the need for new the school division staff is most Ca Pable and has the ability and foresight to project future in implementing school building plans however there Are stumbling blocks which sometimes cause unnecessary the most serious prob Lem is the acquirement of land in the proper location at the right land developers Are obliged to set aside certain Sites for schools and other Public ser it frequently happens that the land offered by a Developer is not considered Satis my resignation and the Board factory by the school author will almost certainly Call a if a proper Exchange can not be negotiated the school Board is sometimes compelled to make special expenditures to acquire the right it seems that people who usually have a social conscience As in sometimes divest themselves that vital human Quality once they become members of a corporate entity involved in land once a new school site is agreed upon there is a further problem i beginning construction due to lengthy delays by the City Council in approving subdivision when i was elected in 1971 i Felt there was a vital need for greater and More meaningful contacts Between trustees and school teach e r s parents and while there have been occasional sometimes through forced and occasionally As a planned there is much room for improvement in this i agree wholeheartedly with the objective of the Manitoba association of school trustees Stop putting children in jail sir i understand the dilemma of Gerhard director of the new Manitoba youth Centre our More expensive jail for Juve of whatever age spend a lot of time planning the Only jail in Canada i know of where no escapes occurred was built by the Ontario it Cost million in and was used for heroin violent or escape prone and sex the windows in the inner prison where Many staff members worked were three feet thick and As suss has suggested for the children incarcerated Iri he youth was divided nto Small rectangles with wire mesh embedded to prevent this caused some difficulty 0 us because in summer we sheltered and in Winter we wore parkas Over a period of the engineers rom Toronto could not solve the air conditioning problems n summer or the heating prob lems in we didst feel sorry for ourselves because at least we could go Home at the in summer 1 e a for would desert their single celled bunks and try to get Cool by sleeping on the Bare floor they spent up to 18 hours per Day for periods As Long As four years sir i have just returned from Winnipeg and and i am extremely disappointed with my trip last i made reservations through my travel agent for a vacation on Lake Winnipeg with venture Manitoba wilderness adventure made Deposit payment upon reserving a twin bedded Cabin for myself and with final payment 30 Days before we left Home in Ligh hopeful of a wonderful these High spirits were Short lived our hotel accommodations at the Winnipeg inn were super and everything was Fine until we received word on the afternoon of about an hour before we planned to leave for Selkirk to Board the lord Selkirk that we were to stay at the hotel Over and depart for the ship sir it was reported last week that Saul speak i n g on behalf of Premier had addressed the Canadian chamber of com Merce for the purpose of open ing up meaningful discus is o n s Between government and the business in the same Issue of the Winnipeg free press in which an editorial on this topic occurred there was also a statement from the president of the Manitoba medical association which appealed to the government once More in pub Lic for Public discussions on the present medical health care system in this province this being found necessary after approximately 130 meetings Over the past several years be tween the medical profession and the government at which there has been a Flat refusal on the part of the government to discuss any meaningful there is a certain kind of politician with a deep Faith in the correctness of his own views who uses this method of approach to open up what ultimately turns into a frontal at tack instead of meaningful Dis i was present at a meeting in England before the institution of the National health scheme there at which who was minister of health at that addressed a Large gathering of physicians and he spoke in pre in these electronically con trolled for leaving their bunks they were then charged with an offence against prison during their four year stay they did not see the and were not allowed out Side the inner this is the solution to the problems of As an added an escape would touch off a system releasing tear Gas to incapacitate staff and inmates we never had an escape in our Ontario run Penitentiary Over a period of several if suss wants to prevent this is the Way it can be total electronic in portions of William Roper Hull in is also possible for the recalcitrant this is not even a Chil Drens like Knowles school for boys in it is called a treatment although privately operate is provincially funded As is of there is a More sensible it is Sim ply to Stop putting children in one of my 12yearold Stu dents at Knowles school for boys committed suicide by hanging in the establishment on Vaughan Street previously run by this boy had committed no but was merely awaiting Transfer to the previously mentioned William Roper Hull school in he had attempted suicide in the he waited Many weeks in Vaughan Street be fore he finally took his own i am no bleeding heart i knew the boys problems but was also Well aware of his considerable he was potentially a very Fine and not machines sir mechanized letter sort ing machines Are being in stalled in the Central Post of fice to be in operation by feb we Are told that the machines Are to Speed handling of mail rather than to Speed if such is the Case it would be More prac tical for the Post office to hire people handling of mail and thus creating greater employment instead of install ing sophisticated sorting a at a terrific if the various Levels of government Are handing out Grants these Days to help create employment As a worthwhile cause then surely Many per sons could be hired to sort out mail As the volume of mail in creases five per cent John boric sky Winnipeg disappointed in the lord Selkirk monday morning since prob lems had Arisen with the ships Early monday per we embarked the ship and were escorted to our disappointments promptly arose our Cabin was extremely not at All As pictured in the no twin Beds but cot size the cleanliness of the Cabin was deplorable the bed linens were not just soiled but the floor strewn with cigarette Shower stall was very and on opening the door on the Wash it fell off hitting my wife foot i didst want to stay in these surround so How could i ask my wife All passengers were instructed to meet in the where we were in formed that we would not be sailing until later that As the engines still were not a very bad lunch was after which we were instructed to disembark As it was necessary to Angle the ship for once we had no facilities for our when inquiring about the actual sailing we were Curtly informed by the first mate that he knew Noth and was Only an employee the same answer came from the this was the Standard reply to any around six Oclock in the after severe a bus arrived taking we Pas sengers on a paddle wheel Dir Ner since we had no Chance to freshen my wife and i refused to we finally were Able to talk to the Busi Ness manager who agreed to refund our and also called a taxi for our return to the rattle precedes the bite wisely the same the government then proceeded to completely ignore the views of the profession and instituted a health scheme which has been termed by recent responsible Cabinet ministers in that country As a its not too often that an 11yearold boy and his pet can throw a City Hall into its happened that Way for David Jamieson of and his pet Wil lie the Possession of the hairy spider is apparently a contravention of a City bylaw that prohibits ownership and Possession of a dangerous Ani in trying to attract More peo ple As candidates for school after attending a number of conferences with trustees from other areas i wonder whether part of the problem is that some people cling to office too Tyng and tend to discourage potential we certainly need More Young people on our boards and seven Oaks has made a Start in this my two years on the school Board have convinced me that the Only vested interest in our schools should be that of the people being served the Stu they Are people and they should come out of the school system with their creative faculties stimulated and not i sincerely Hope that the Citi Zens of West Kildonan District of seven Oaks will have a worthwhile Choice of dilates in the coming Bielec Tion and that some capable younger person May aspire to the seat i am Bertha Arnold Winnipeg proved it to me by a rare act of altruism before he was whisked away from Knowles to the local jail for if he is willing to take sex t r e m e suss could easily prevent if not suicides and the somewhat More Subtle despair of children under his care which May Only result in acts of rebellion and Defiance which Are not news suss thinks that there should be quiet rooms in which misbehaving children Are kept in isolation the less juvenile equivalent of the infamous holes or Isola Tion cells in prisons for adults where i have also worked through sensory deprivation to mental hos Pital and Many less dramatically or obviously manifested emotional prob believes that Chil Dren should be i do i think this senseless degradation of children in jul v e n i 1 e jails and treatment such As Knowles and William Roper should be there Are humane alternatives often Lead to the reformation of these unfortunate but this is a Field in which sanity is noticeably Johnson Winnipeg again in we engaged another hotel room of our expense the next evening we a passage on the River Rouge and had a delightful the conditions of this ship were sex and we enjoyed our food and the com extended himself greatly to make us after this very enjoyable we would have been Happy on this ship if it had sailed Lake had the lord Selkirk ii been Only half As clean and its Crew half As Vul might have when i return to j know i will Contact the River Rouge cruise it was most in i cannot say the same for the lord Selkirk Donald Illinois i present at a meeting of the Manitoba medical association in 1971 at which representing the present Manitoba govern spoke in favor of co operation and meaningful discussions with the medical profession with a View to instituting new approaches to the Deli very of health care this government has since then consistently not Only ignored but re fused to even discuss the views of those who know most about delivery of health per haps meetings might now com Mence in View of current de but it is sad that it is necessary to fight when both sides have the same Aims of improving the total health of All of the there have been Many other incidents in the development of democratic countries in which a totally con Vinced of being has totally ignored and overridden the views of Large portions of the electorate although i Ami sure that the Canadian chamber of Commerce has within its membership Many individuals who Are aware of the dangers of accepting these kind of i think it is worthwhile drawing to the at1 Tention of some others who Are perhaps More naive that the musical rattle of the serpents Tail precedes its Michael my Winnipeg fair Flay needed sir As a businessman in his Community i am Well aware of the constant talk of welfare abuse and i have never condoned these after a recent visit to our City welfare office at 223 James i am be inning to feel fair i was shocked to see the condition of these offices and wait ing for the furniture provided in the wait ing room consisted of a few rows of torn theatre the office areas and waiting room Are in terrible need of no business would dare expect its clientele to put up with such an it seems to me that it would be easy for some one to rationalize trying to beat the sys tem for a few dollars when that same system beats him of his self surely with the budget our City has to work a few dollars can be found for a can of paint and some used what exactly Are our priorities Feldmar Winnipeg Rotten to the Core sir Chancellor Kreisky of Austria has allowed a sover eign nation to Cave in to the threats and blackmail of Homicidal by closing facilities for jewish immigrants from the soviet Union headed for Chancellor Kreisky received the approbation of the the fact that hundreds of soviet tanks Are not too far away must not be Chancellor Kreisky spilled the Beans in an interview with the austrian National Broad casting he contended that other european such As West Swit France and have released Arab terrorists who committed bloody believe it or not there is no european country where Arab terrorists Are in prison after perpetrating the most heinous and bestial of the fact that All the murderers have been freed is Concrete evidence that european governments Are going Rotten to the Maurice Sair Winnipeg a world apart sir on september the Csc presented a one hour documentary on the mentally a world we congratulate the Csc for this effective attempt to get rid of superstition and half truths and show modern techniques of diagnosis and we regret that the program concentrated on chronic the mentally retarded and the very it did not give a Complete picture of the tremendous Success which can be achieved with acute laves can be salvaged by the combined efforts of professionals and volunteers from the the program ignored the More than one Mil lion children in Canada now have mental or emotional Dis with funds and sup port much can be accomplished in this As we would suggest that the Csc complement the 23 program with one describing the diagnosis and treatment of the acute patient who spends Little time in a mental Hospital and the diagnosis and treat ment of psychiatric ally Dis Turbed such a pro Gram would Stim Ulav interest and a desire to see More done in these right Canadian mental health association Manitoba division Winnipeg cheap snipe sir last weeks letter by Greg Morley could easily be seen As a cheap and ineffective snipe at since Morley does not substantiate his implied and ambiguous charge of greens Igno Rance of his political perhaps Morley could be More open about his own Politi Cal stance so that one could study his allegation of Igno no innuendoes please just some degree of clarity of your own position rather than childish Stone throwing at a minister of the is that asking too much of a professor of Law Terrence Hryniuk Winnipeg mixed marriages sir your readers May per haps have been misled by some of the contentions advanced in the mixed marriages up in the by in the free while mixed marriages Are directly related to the multifold process of assimilation going on within the soviet they Are most certainly not a Panacea for Russ Ifica the situation is far More and less to the advantage of the russian people than the Axelbank article Sug soviet ethnologist have diagnosed the following Basic trends in this matter 1 in the All areas except the autonomous where trends 2 and 3 prevail there is in Tensive assimilation Over 67 per cent of no russians to this is certainly the Case with the siberian Boom towns Axelbank refers 2 in no russian both the resident russians and the titular no russian nationality assimilate other non rus sians 3 in no russian the titular nationality assimilates resident russians moderately to for in stance in Vilna 52 j per cent of the offspring issuing from mixed russian lithuanian marriages consider themselves lithuanians i n Riga the analogous proportion is 57 per in Tallinn it rises to 62 per cent in Kiev Minsk byelorussian Tashkent Uzbekistan and it is still 4 in All a certain proportion of individuals issuing from mixed marriages be t w e e n minority nationalities a Lithuania latvian marriage say Estonia be come assimilated to the titular if one adds to this the Low and declining russian birth one cannot help but to in spite of Axel Banks contrary that russian demographic control of the is becoming increasingly More it is possible that recent tight ening of ideological and Politi Cal reins represents the reaction of a Hierarchy Well aware of what appear to be irreversible natural associate department of political Stu University of Manitoba Winnipeg increasing frustration sir canadians Are becoming increasingly frustrated by the rapidly rising Cost of if this frustration it is liable to mushroom into an explosive in a world this does not mean that we can expect a revolution in can Law Ilij traditionally canadians this frustration it is have avoided revolutionary Vio except in extreme Situa that has been dominated by the revolution of rising expect canadians Are now finding themselves accepting it is True that wages continue to but the real Dollar value of most wages is less than it was a couple of years As a we find we Are eating less of the food that was commonplace on most tables in the canadians Are eating fewer eggs and less Bacon and other traditional we Are now discovering that the Good life that Many have expected is just not Hap the average Canadian longer finds Homow Pership within his Means the average Price of a suburban Home in Toronto is an impossible few of Bur fathers found Home ownership a financial i revolutions tend to occur i when a people find that expectations Are not being in the developed we expect a rising Standard of but now we find that the opposite is what can we expect an accelerating series of protest Boycotts and confrontations which May include Vio Lent acts will precede a vote of if the present situation continues to grow no hastily conceived aspirin remedies will be sufficient to keep the Liberal government in under those the Trudeau Cabinet would be decimated in a general canadians will accept government inaction and income but they will not support a government that appears in capable of governing the John Diefenbaker rapid fall from Power is a re cent example of a nations los ing Faith in a prime ministers ability to the alternative to a similar Fate is for the liberals to find solutions to the economic plight into which they have Lead the governments which find or appear remain in other governments Rod Murphy ;
