Winnipeg free press monday october 8, 1973 gift commemorates dutch liberation by James Nelson cps the dutch Canadian Community s thank you gift to Canada came to fruition on thanksgiving sunday when Albert de Klerk dutch master organist inaugurated the National arts Centre s new concert Organ. Built by Flentroy Organ works of Zandas the 21-Stop instrument which. Stands 24 feet tall on the opera House stage was Given in recognition of the Canadian army s libera Tion of Holland in 1945. Gov. Gen. Roland Michener and mrs. Michener attended the recital along with newly appointed dutch ambassador Thorn Leeson and about 700 invited members of the dutch Community. G. Hamilton Southam director general of the arts Centre thanked the donors at a recep Tion after the recital. He said that in holding the Cost of the Centre to million the nag had had to Cut out its original plans for an Organ. The gift was As a result that much More he said. Or. De Klerk played a pro Gram of works by Bach scar Latti Mozart and the late heal Willan of Toronto. After the recital program or. De Klerk was handed a sealed envelope with two Musi Cal themes chosen by Mario Bernardi nac musical director and invited to improvise on either of them. He did both. First on the arts Centre s smaller six Stop Flentroy he played variations on Zerlina s Arias Batti Batti from Mozart s Don Giovanni then on the big new Organ he improvised a fugue As the opening theme of Mozart s c minor piano concerto k. 491, ending with a test of the full Power of the instrument. The smaller Organ was Given to the arts Centre Asah initial Canada. Tile firm has an inter National reputation for building organs in classic style. Elec tric Power is used Only for the wind pumps All other parts of the Organ work mechanically from the organist s fingers and feet. The arts Centre orchestra now is the Only one in Canada whose Home base the nac opera House is equipped with an Organ. Or.
