Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - October 16, 1973, Winnipeg, Manitoba R Winnipeg free press tuesday october 16, 1973 17 dear Heloise three of us share an apartment. We take turns at cooking but no one puts the measuring cups and spoons away in the same place so we lose time looking for them or guess How much. I bought a cup tree along with a set of stainless steel measuring cups and spoons the ones that have the handles. I Hung the cups at the Bottom and the spoons doubled up at the top. The holes in the spoon handle had to be made a Little larger to fit on the tree Hooks. At the top i slipped on a Spring clip to have Handy to hold the recipe card. J. O rouble i Hope you Don t All get to cooking in the Kitchen at the game time. Remember the old tale too Many Cooks spoil the Broth tis True love Heloise dear Heloise i m writing this for new mothers As my teething baby Chews on my Finger. Wash those cute Little stretch sleep and play suits before baby is anywhere near big enough to Wear them. Some of them May shrink and if they do you might As Well find it out in Advance so your wee one can them at whatever size they decide to be after being washed. Baby May Wear a suit once before its first washing and never be Able to get into it again i know because it happened to me be sure to put baby s name on his diaper bag and other belongings that might get mixed up if you leave him at a Nursery. You also might write his name on masking tape and stick to his clothing if there s any possibility of confusion mrs. P. A dear what woman who does her own housework in t bothered at times by rough red hands at least those who refuse to Wear rubber gloves for dirty chores for Protection plus a Healing Beauty treatment try rubbing come of that cold Salve onto the hands. Slip on those real thin Cotton cos Metic gloves before putting on the rubber gloves. I had tried so Many lotions and creams to no Avail but this Salve reme died the situation in Only two Days Cory Caulsen dear Heloise my teen agers have made a wreck room in the basement. It is amazing what these youngsters have done with it. The Best thing is that they covered one Wall with fancy Wall paper and built Book shelves with unfinished lumber covered with the same paper using Staples to cover them. Real easy. On these shelves they put Seldom used and shabby books that were too Good to throw away. They covered All of them with the same paper and using a Marker put the titles on the front. S. When the books Are lined up they All Are uniform but the titles Don t show and de tract As they Are on the tide when put on the shelf. Being a widower with three kids who Are always making the House a mess this sure has eliminated lots of it. I sure have found one thing As Long As you let them build it they take Pride in it and keep it clean. Have you any idea How we widowers depend on you Kellis Mccall Early Public nurse now in retirement Cornwall ont. Sarday in the Parish Hall i am Avenue and Worth Street reasons suggested for toor9 Reading Vancouver up elementary school pupils Here Are scoring lower on standardized Reading tests than students did six years ago but the trend May mean the tests Are obsolescent rather than that children Are not learning to read As Well. There s some indication we re slipping in terms of vocabulary comprehension and says or. Norm Ellis assistant director of planning and evaluation for the Vancouver school Board. Similar patterns with greater scoring fall offs have turned up in most North american cities and Many educationists report the a t the standardized tests created decades ago were not designed for the kind of Lan Guage skills More recently emphasized in elementary schools. The recent trend has been away from using a single text Book remembering details of a Story and memorizing the meanings of new words. Instruction has concentrated More on finding Reading mate rial appropriate to each child and encouraging pupils to think and talk about what they have read. One Factor i the decline May be the flight of affluent families to the suburbs in creasing the main City s pro portion of children from poorer 11 i e s and non English speaking immigrants thus Low ering average vocabulary and comprehension scores. Another Fai suggested by Al Blakey president of the Van c o u v e r elementary school teachers association ves pupils Are not kept Back As often As they were 10 years ago but Are moved upwards throughout the school system with their age group. Thus the average age per Jrade is lower More poor readers arc staying in school and the typical class registers a lower Reading level. Vesta has urged new kinds of tests for what now is being taught. More co operation be tween teachers and re searchers is needed to develop measurements attuned to the times or. Blakey said.
