Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - October 17, 1973, Winnipeg, Manitoba W Winnipeg free press wednesday october 17, 1973 by Andy Mellen most children have rather vivid imaginations and As a result Many of them tend to build some things up a Way out of proportion. Whenever i think Back to my younger Days i recall How i d stay awake at night thinking about the big trip the family was going on the next Day. Even if in reality it was just a Quick one Day Jaunt out to the Beach i d get so worked up thinking about it that i could t sleep. Most of us outgrow such tendencies although there Are still Many among us who continue to make mountains out of molehills. When you re Young it s easy to think of athletes and movie stars As being larger than life figures. I vividly remember things such As the 1960 world series when i gladly skipped school to catch the last innings of some of the games. As far As i was concerned it was a matter of life and death whether Rny team won. Time has a Way of changing things however. Just the other Day i took in the second game of this year s world series and while i saw an exciting hard played contest i did t get the same feeling i i d 10 or 12 years ago. Those heroes of years gone by Are just baseball players now capable of making the same mistakes you or i might. When you see players younger than you Are playing in the big leagues you begin to realize that with a Little More skill and Effort it could even be you out there on the Field. It s often difficult to. Take people off the pedestals you worked1, so hard to put them on. I guess it s just part of getting older. Short stuff remember Tom Kelly from his Days As the late night mad on Krc Well Tom who left Winnipeg a year ago for a Job at radio Staton Fox in Montreal is on the move if you happen to be in Toronto in the near future you can catch his show on station a Kwh. Here s an announcement which should Surprise absolutely nobody. Within two weeks of its initial release me new rolling stones album goats head soup has climbed to the top spot on Winnipeg s up Chart. The stones recently completed a european tour and the word is that the group May be Back in North America next year for another extensive tour. I wonder if anyone h As lined up a Winnipeg Date four Winni Eggers who made Good will be on Televik sign Friday night Randy Robbie and Tim Bachman plus c. F. Fred Turner who Are collectively known As Bachman Turner overdrive will be on the Midnight special along with acts such As the new York dolls War Climax blues band and Mott the Hoople. I m looking Forward to my first Opportunity to see the Bach Man Turner band since it left Winnipeg to work out of Vancouver. The readers White dear Andy i be been a regular Reader of your column for some time now and while i m not always fully in agreement with your views i have been interested in a number of your Arti cles dealing with people who think the world owes them a living. We live in an age where there Are boundless opportunities for Young people ready and willing to apply themselves. In spite of this whenever i take a walk downtown. I m invariably accosted by a number of s Young men and women soliciting spare change. Most of them look quite healthy and capable of working yet they seem to be Content to let others provide for them while they loaf around. You read the unemployment figures Are at an All time High yet Many jobs which require a bit of physical exertion Are open around Winnipeg. The trouble is no one seems willing to do anything More demanding than pumping Gas. Perhaps i Don t have All of the facts straight and maybe some of these Young people have tried unsuccessfully to find work. Nevertheless i feel that too Many Young people Are practically throwing their lives away. Yours truly Don Stevenson 382 Lang Side Street. Hebe and there Camille the final movie in the Art gallery s films of Greta Garbo series will be shown this evening. Showtime is . In the chamber theatre on the main floor of the gallery. Cinema 3 has an interesting double Bill dealing with discontent and the search for personal free Dom. Easy rider the sensational film which Shook a lot of people up four years ago and Marlon Brando s the wild one will be showing nightly until saturday. Ottawa up the new broadcast code advertising to children must be followed to the letter or it will become mandatory the Canadian radio television commission said in a statement tuesday. The commission would Monitor the effectiveness of the voluntary code and would require broadcasters to confirm Ltd Lett adherence to it when applying for renewal of a licence. The commission after a series of meetings with various experts in the Field said it is convinced younger children Are easily influenced by exaggerated claims and misleading techniques in advertising.
