Cal on Bath Oil beads by David Lamb Heron Island Australia special tons like an advancing army Groat herds of Coral eating starfish Are plundering their Way southward along the great Barrier reef devouring and destroying expanses of the largest Struc Ture Ever formed by living organisms. Some scientists estimate the spiny Multi armed Crown of Thorn starfish acan toaster p 1 a n c i Al ready have attacked and at least partly destroyed per cent of the Long reef extending from the Distant shores of Papua new Guinea to the Tropic of Capricorn. On scores of islands like Load Stone John Brewer and Ellison the destruction is total the fragile cover ing of living Coral has been stripped Bare and in its place now grows a fuzzy Grey Weed like algae. Their work done the starfish then move on to another reef. Opinions vary on what has caused the plague infestations of starfish some scientists blame Man s intrusion others say it is a cyclic phenomenon but there is agreement on one Point the future of the eighth wonder of the world is very much at stake. It is a future an australian airline spoke of As Long ago As 1969 with an and that said come to the Barrier reef before it is too the reef is a disaster said or. Robert in Dean a senior lecturer in biology at the University of Queensland i n Brisbane and a noted authority on Coral reefs. I think the starfish could have been contained if there had been action initially but unfortunately the Issue became involved with politics. We probably still could save specific reefs from attack if a concerted attempt was made at an astronomical Cost but there s no Chance left of containing the infestation like we had say five years or. Endean believes the infestation May be caused by pollution the North Queensland tobacco grow ers co operative alone sold Gallons of insecticides and pounds of fungicides in 1969 and by the virtual demise of the Star fishes predator the Triton a Large Mollusk whose Horn shaped Shell brings up to in Souve Nir shops. Other Coral reefs from Guam to the Philippines have been struck with Sim Ilar infestations in the past 15 years. The principal plagues have occurred near areas of human popu lation and often As in aus t r a 1 i a in areas where traces of insecticides have been found in the Ocean Waters. In Okinawa the government is paying Farmers to collect by hand and carry away the Star fish. Under Normal conditions starfish Are present on Coral reefs in Small numbers. Its Advance Over the Chain s Southern two thirds does not mean that the great earner reef itself is about to be washed away because All but the living hard Coral coverings is solid Rock built Over thou Sands of years what is at stake is the reef s Beauty its significance As a major Marine scientific Laboratory and All the living organisms associated with it. Reefs Are formed by polyps or corals the size of Pencil erasers extracting Lime from the Ocean and turning it into skeletons which attach to each other to form a greater and greater mass. The soft Liv ing part of the polyp clings to the inside of the cup shaped Skeleton and can emerge far enough to find food. The Barrier reef is the largest collection of Coral reefs known through out geological history and contains the most varied Marine assemblage of Marine organisms found in any comparable sized re Gion in the world. Unlike reefs near Guam the Barrier reef is built in a shallow sea bed Only 60 to 100 feet beneath the Liv ing Coral. The starfish which number in the Mil Lions thus can walk from Island reef to Island reef. With tourists a year visiting the reef Queensland shudders at the alarmist cries. Most tourist islands on the Northern third of the reef have been spared but on Heron is land a 42-acre Paradise straddling the Tropic of Capricorn starfish recently were discovered just 60 Miles North. What worries me is the growing affluence of the said Gerry Goeden a Miami Florida biologist working for the state of Queensland on Heron. It used to be an adventure to come to the Barrier reef but not any longer. There Are something like yachts under construction i n Queensland right now with More and More people being Able to afford boats and travel it s just a matter of time be fore they come farther and farther out. Unless the entire reef is made a National Park so there can be some control the islands Aren t designed to handle those kind of think wallpaper and rooms come alive look at any room that had one or More Walls papered.
