Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - June 13, 1974, Winnipeg, Manitoba
Winnipeg free press. Thursday 13. 1974 71 world cup Kickoff pageantry Security Frankfurt Router defending Champion Brazil and Yugoslavia kick off the 1974 world cup soccer finals today against a backdrop of pageantry and under an umbrella of tight Security by air and land. A capacity crowd is expected to pack the Forest flanked Wald stadium to see the colourful opening ceremonies. There will be bands and Folk groups from the 16 countries which have survived two years of qualifying matches. Two of the All time stars of past championships Pele of Brazil and Uwe Seeler of West Germany will bring a nostalgic moment As they hold aloft the old and new world championship trophies. Brazil gained permanent pos session of the Jules Rimel trophy when they wont for the third time at the last world championships in Mexico four years ago and pole was the hero of that Triumph. The West German hosts Ever aware of the tragedy which marred their last great world sports event the 1972 olympic games in Munich have mounted massive Security operations around the nine stadiums where matches will be played and outdoors Mel Dagg with resident anglers5of the province Are now having their numbers increased by the yearly arrival of visitors from South of the Border. An Early morning drive on trans Canada Highway will soon reveal the Large number of out of province cars on the Highway. Most of these Are pulling boats and motors and the vast majority Are headed fro the More Northern lakes around the Pas flin flon and Thompson. Those who have been Here several times before generally Book accommodation a year in Advance. Local anglers often find a full House if they Are looking for a couple of Days relaxation at any of the Fly in Camps or for that matter closer to Home As such Waters As Crow Duck or Caribou lakes. The reports of the big fish Are now starting to arrive. Anglers Are catching More fish As the Waters warm. There Are still problems in some locations due to High water and in areas such As the Winnipeg River these conditions Are expected to continue for some time. Success has been Good for Pike Sauger and Pickerel at Mcarthur and seven Sisters Falls. Several Pike in the 10 to 15-Pound class have been taken. An 18 Pound two ounce scrapper was caught recently at great Falls by Len Tymofichuk 45 Arlington while fishing with a red and White spoon. Ten Pound Pickerel supplied All the action for Bruce Bonzer of devils Lake and Mark Mathison of Fargo while fishing recently in Caribou Lake. It is interesting to note there is not one Manitoba resident shown in the list of master Angler Pickerel for May taken out of this Lake. As usual it is a Case of knowledge equipment and holidays at the right time of the year. Some time ago the fisheries department reported a heavy Winter kill in numerous lakes throughout the province. Anglers trying their Luck in these lakes Are meeting with Little Success. The possible exception to this is Rock Lake where limits of Small Pike have been taken. In the Southeast Corner of the province Whitemouth Lake did not escape so easily and the Winter kill has been heavy. Moose Lake is also in bad shape and the latest reports indicate it suffered an almost total Winter kill. Several areas in the Lake of the Woods arc producing Good results for Sauger Pickerel and Pike. Shoa Lake has Good Pickerel fishing at the present time Al though most fish taker Are Small. Switching to the North country poor weather conditions have hampered fishing at the Pas. Pickerel arid Lake Trout action has been spotty although some anglers have taken their limit in Clearwater and ath Apap. Northern Pike fishing has been Good in Many of the lakes throughout this Region. Goose Lake North of the Pas reports Good fishing for the last two weeks. Lake Dauphin is improving for Pike and the watermen is classed As fair for Pickerel at the present time. Closer to Home the fishing pressure has been heavy at Lockport. Many anglers report they have lost More fishing gear this year clue to unseen snags than Ever before. Reports still continue to come in of those individuals who Are using dip nets to take other than coarse fish. The latest is from our Good Friend and dedicated conservationist Tom Clindinin of St. Claude. He reports netting of Pickerel is taking place at the Portage dam. Apparently the culprits take along two containers and put the Pickerel in one and the coarse fish in the other. If the conservation officer appears on the scene they quickly dump the Pickerel. It is just this Type of a game hog that causes Many of the problems facing our fish and wildlife today. Dwindling supplies will not stand that kind of abuse for very Long. Round the teams training Headquarters. Their is to guard against by threats which might spoil his feast of world soccer which reaches its Climax with he final championship match n the Munich olympic stadium n july 7.
