Thursday february 13, 1975 the signal is Mush for North dog Derby by Ralph Bagley free press staff writer the Pas eight teams of blogs were on the starting line thursday morning As the first Lap of the 150-mile world championship dog Derby got away from the exhibition grounds to begin their feature attraction of the 28tli annual Northern Manitoba trappers festival. The 1975 festival opened wednesday with the crowning of the festival Queen a Torch Light Parade through the town and several social events. The official opening was staged at the exhibition grounds thursday morning just before the Start of the dog race. The dog teams and their Drivers will run three laps Over a 50-mile course thursday Friday and saturday and Good crowds Are expected to follow their Progress each Day be cause this is the event that re ally makes the annual festival of this town tick. Officials admitted they were a Little disappointed wednes Day when entries closed with Only eight teams in the Field but they noted this was Only one less than last year and expressed pleasure at the Quality of the entries. Although some other dog derbies have been attracting More entries local officials said their 150-mile test is a longer distance than most am say the Winner can truly claim championship Slatus. The win Ner on a basis of total elapsed time for the three laps will win the Labatt s Manitoba brew Ery trophy and in prize Money. While the in Ushers were get Ting their dogs ready for the race and attending a dinner and briefing Here wednesday night four Young ladies were vying for the Honor of reigning Over the 1975 event As festival Queen. The Honor went to Andrea Martin a student of Keewatin Community College who represented the College in the pageant. All four contestants were 17-year-old students the other three from Margaret Barber collegiate Institute. Karlayne Kapl Anchuk representative of the Pas United hockey team was chosen Princess. The other contestants were Phyllis Grabowich representing the Manitoba Metis federation and Marl in e Buchanan representing the Pas Friendship Centre. The Queen was crowned by miss Manitoba Lorraine Gauthier wednesday night and the ceremony was repeated at the opening thursday morning with mayor Doug me Bride getting the festivities under Way at the ice Palace. A carnival atmosphere Enve loped the entire town. The dog Derby has always been recognized As the feature attraction but the trapper s festival is much More than a dog race and a Queen contest. It features something for everyone including a Junior dog Derby and freight dog races sports events for the King trapper title a Marathon Snow shoe race soap Box Derby a stage show displays of arts and crafts a raw fur Competition Power Toboggan races and general fun for everyone. In the dog races seven of in eight Drivers have raced Lere before and two of them Are former winners. Last year s Michael Mckenzie of Cumberland Louse sask., in t Here to de end his title but Swanson Highway and Alex Cook two former champs Are seeking another Victory. Or. Highway was a three time Winner taking the honors in 1965, 1966, and 1972, and or. Cook claimed the Crown in 1968 and 1969. Both Are Here from Brochet Man. Besides or. Highway and or. Cook two other Brochet residents entering teams Are Horace Cook who was runner up in his first attempt last year and Napoleon Merasty who has had a second third and fourth in his six previous attempts. Or. Highway has been in the event 10 times and Alex Cook five times. The Only newcomer to the dog race this year is Henry Morin of Reindeer Lake Man. The other contestants Are Allison kit Chikleski of split Lake Man., Clifford Carriere of Cumberland House sask., and Bob Mcphail of the Pas who will be the local favorite driving a team which has previously won the freight race event.
