Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - February 13, 1975, Winnipeg, Manitoba 20 Winnipeg free press thursday february 13, 1975 co operatives with Teeth sir i read with interest g. Man seeking a Job do so with j. Layle s letter to Eugene out the Benefit or collective Wielan published in the free press recently. 11 is in keeping with your editorial comment from Lime to time and i would like to give the other Side of bargaining labor Laws and minimum wages labor unions Are organized ing boards Are organized producers protecting their inter Hie argument for the Benefit of cols. Your readers. I marketing boards have be or. Layle is quite right a very emotional Issue in lie says that a Large number of j recent months because they Small producers Are nut con Are breaking Down the barriers trolled by the producer Board Hal protect vested interests but it is also True that they do that take advantage of i divid not have an important Impact u a 1 producers. Traditionally on the bag Market generally. Egg production is obviously a Side line for these Small producers. When or if they be came significant in the com Mercial Market they would be required to operate within the authority of the producer Board. In the meantime they serve a convenient local mar Ket which no one wants to in Lerf Cre with. The commercial egg producer who depends on egg product the primary producer was the shining example of a free Enterprise. He still is. But when he raises his voice collectively he suddenly becomes a Neo socialist in the eyes of reactionary elements in our society. In the 1920s the co opera Tives received the same treat ment but eventually they be came respectable Why because they gradually broke Down Hie prejudice nya inst their legitimate right to Corn lion for his livelihood is the Pete collectively and not Indi one who has the problem. He has been living in a Boom and bust Cycle that was bring ing ruin to those producers upon whom the Public depends for an adequate Supply of top Quality eggs. He has to main Tain expensive housing and equipment and these Days he has to buy or produce High Cost feed. In 1972 he received1 an average of 26.4 cents Peri dozen for his eggs. In the first two months of that year he received less than 18 cents per dozen. Many went broke the remainder organized a producer marketing Board to protect themselves. Their action had several worthwhile consequences. 1 it prevented Many producers from bankruptcy. 2 it saved a major part of a million Industry in Mani Toba. 3 it prevented the Industry from eventual domination by a very Small handful of processors and feed companies who would have been forced not willingly into the production Field to protect their Market. Sometimes we have a Choice before a change in our social Structure becomes irrevocable. Visually. Marketing boards Are in the process of establishing the same collective right for their producers. There Are still a few die hards who think that the free Enterprise system of Adam Smith Vintage should be retained for those who Are id ready established and have some economic advantage that they want to protect. Vested interests Are always ready to fight change that May result to them in some loss of Power prestige or business. To these people democracy and the Rule of the majority is Good for governments but that is where it should Stop. I have worked with and for co operatives most of my life and i View marketing boards As co operatives with Teeth giving them the authority to exercise their influence in the marketplace. The Battle for control of vast areas of our Economy is very real. Co operation and Market ing boards Are vital pieces of machinery in our society if producers and Consumers Are going to exercise any influence in the marketplace. Those who give lip services to the free Enterprise system should recognize that fact very soon before the control of much of our Economy passes entirely into the hands of a very Small group with the financial re sources to exploit it to our ultimate disadvantage. Women in India sir my letter of february 1 has been misinterpreted by mrs. Thadaius in that she lived that the status of women in Canada is unreasonable and deplorable. Canadian women Nuti Mik Lake air service claims that the Mihest Canad do not have to be Content with an girls aspire to be is a Well the treatment they Are present paying profession of a Mas ily being Given. No one can sense. Certainly that Canadian women Winnipeg r. D. Chase immigration sir As a member of the executive of the immigration Council of Manitoba chaired by Rev. Martin Durksen i Wel come the Opportunity to Partio Pale in a total Community wide review of the Green paper on immigration tabled in the House of commons. The 570-Page study which outlines four possible directions for future policy has been de signed according to immigration minister Robert Andras As a foundation for constructive discussion on the role future immigration policy should the major alternatives outlined in the government study Are quotas announcing global targets for immigration including quotas for zones or countries. And this is one example. Doi Anandlal ceiling setting a we prefer to have 340 Small local Umit each in con. Businessmen Matins Case Reg with Federal and provincial governments and estered egg producers operating their own business and in every Way participating in the social and economic life of Manitoba or would we prefer to replace them by a few Multi National organizations it is my opinion that we need the former. If they make mistakes we can Correct them but not so with the Multi nationals. If those of your readers who think like or. Layle that sche Duling or planning production is morally wrong would Sim ply apply that reasoning to Many other forms of production they might develop a More constructive approach to marketing boards. When producers of cars or detergents or men s suits produce for a Market they determine their costs and add a margin of profit. The Quantity they produce is related to Market demand. Some times they Are wrong but to stay in business they like producers with marketing boards have to be right most of the time. Is there anything morally wrong about that approach other groups. Continuing the flexible sys tem by which immigrants Are admitted on the basis of Points which must add up to a total of at least 50. They Are granted on the basis of education wealth Job availability for the applicant and other factors. Gearing the immigrant flow More directly to tha National Economy and the labor Market needs. Newspaper reports have indicated that in the Green paper it is generally agreed that immigrants should be Dis cussed on the basis of non discriminatory criteria with re Gard to their race color or Creed. The Green paper stresses that the importance of the family should be respected and that Canada should continue to open its doors to some people notably refugees for compassionate reasons and to fulfil International obligations. I would like to address my remarks specifically to the last if or. Layle is right we j two Points would have to concede that the Canadian government is there is no place in our society a signatory to the Universal de for labor unions. Should every caration o f human rights saudi women sir since this is International women s year i feel those readers who Are concerned in the struggle for full Equality and Freedom for women May like to know How their Sisters in saudi Arabia Are treated because of their sex. Although All saudi people Are oppressed by the Mon Archy of King Faisal the Feu dal conditions under which women exist Are appalling. There is Little in the Way of health services and the few hospitals that exist Are inaccessible for the Ordinary peo ple. There Are no clinics or maternity centres. Educational facilities suffer from the government s deliver amusing sir i found h. Pontoppidan s letter incentives 1, in the free press february 5 hilariously amusing and absurd. If it weren t for Public hous ing i would not be Able to turn some cases May my Honeywell thermostat up to suit in death 85, let alone a cosy 70 degrees. Ate policy of spreading Agno Rance and maintaining it. The first school for girls was opened in 1960, and this Only after much struggle and Many arrests. Pupils Are forced to Wear a Black tent covering them from head to foot. This even applies to infant girls in their first year at primary school. Women teachers most of whom Are from other Arab countries Are forced to Wear the same garment. In addition they Are housed in secluded Homes. A Soldier guards each Entrance. N o resident May leave the building without his permission and escort. This applies even to visits to friends. A woman breaking the regu lation is subject to a punish ment. This depends on thana Ture of the it ranges from beating with Cane Sticks at the Home to a Public exhibit which states that the inherent dignity and the equal and in alienable rights of All members of the human family is the foundation of Freedom Justice and peace in the world. Articles 13 and 14 of the declaration state the following article 13 everyone has the right to Freedom of movement and residence within the Borders of each state. 2 everyone has the right to leave any country including his own and to return to his country. Article 14 everyone has the right to seek and to enjoy in other countries Asylum from persecution. 2 this right May not be invoked in the Case of prosecutions genuinely arising from non political crimes or from acts contrary to the purposes and principles of the United nations. It is my Strong conviction that the immigration policy of Canada must constantly reflect these principles. I agree wholeheartedly with or. Andras remarks in speech he made before the commons on october 22 of last year. Canadians take Pride in the fact that we Are a nation of immigrants. Even those whose families have been in the country for Many generations Trace their roots to other lands other continents. Our nation was built by immigrants and sustained by immigrants throughout Canada s history. Our National spirit has been continually enriched by new canadians from other lands. Let s not forget immigrants opened up this country and pushed Back the frontiers. They helped develop Canada As a modern Industrial nation. In no Small measure they Are responsible for our present economic development our present Quality of As citizens of this Community and As canadians we must familiarize ourselves with the Green paper on immigration keeping in mind that it pro Vides options not definitive policy. We no have the Opportunity for widespread Public debate on the subject in order to help formulate policy which can be enacted into legislation. In considering the options we should be consistent with the three Basic principles of our present immigration poli f 1 universality and non sir i am enclosing a clip Ping of a letter in the free press Jan. 11, written by r Rousseau. Editor s note the letter claimed that the writer s 11-year-old son while snowmobiling on Nuti Mik Lake on new year s eve was stopped by the owner of the local air service who then arrogantly pushed my son aside took the keys from his Sidoo and left him stranded there on the Lake forcing him to walk the rest of the Way i am certainly surprised that you a supposedly intelligent Man would permit such a prejudiced letter to appear in your paper without proof or grounds of what you were printing.
