A Winnipeg official of the Federal consumer affairs department said last week he expects the minister will announce View voluntary guide lines for meat nomenclature this month. Although the official declined to give details until the min ister s announcement it is expected they will encourage retailers to Label meat cuts according to what part of the an Imal they re from. Such information relates to tenderness and is therefore helpful in choosing appropriate cooking methods. At present Consumers find some meat labelled Only with such names As Cowboy steaks or dinner steaks. If con Sumers were to Fry these As for a sirloin Cut results could j be disappointing. I Cowboy steaks a most local chains Are Cut from the Cross rib a less tender Cut of meat. They would therefore be Best cooked by moist heat methods braising or stewing. If dry heat methods frying or broiling Are preferred marinating the meat for sever Al hours before cooking would be recommended. An Industry wide voluntary meat identification program has been in effect in the United states for about two years. I supermarket chains in Winnipeg appear to be taking a More Active role in providing consumer information. Last week the Dominion and also carried a roasting time and temperature Chart and advice on freezing meats. Tom boy and Iga stores have regularly carried Small consumer information inserts in ads. Contract set for women in Vancouver Vancouver up a Union for working women has signed its first collective agreement on behalf of 10 employees at Vancouver Transi Tion House. A spokesman for the service office and retail workers Union of Canada said the one year contract provides an in crease in wages from a month to retroactive to aug. 1, 1974, plus a shift differential of 22 cents an hour.
