Canada s food potential not being exploited Dean in Canada we Are doing very Little towards developing oar tremendous dormant food production or. L. Ii. Shebeski Dean of agriculture at the University of Mani Toba told a meeting of the women s Canadian club of Winnipeg in the hotel fort Garry monday. Speaking on world food production and mass starvation d r. Shebeski said Canada does t have storage facilities for Grain reserves and referred to the present Grain transportation system As a National Canada is also taking More land out of production than is being replaced by new mar Ginal land he said. Ontario alone at present is losing 28 acres of prime Agri cultural land every hour to non farm he said. The Dean of agriculture said on a world basis there is no reason for optimism that massive starvation will be eradicated. It is not that there is a Lack in technology or of ideas but there is a decided Lack in he said. No single developing nation or for that matter devel oped nation has put its priority on food As an example he cited India where the population has increased by 50 million in four years but which opted for a nuclear bomb rather than additional fertilizer plants. If major famines and increased unrest arc to be minimized or averted a More per manent solution is or. Shebeski said. Our role and tie role of All developed countries should be t o initiate crash programs in the underdeveloped or devel Oping countries at wartime emergency Levels of expenditure. Without delineating the nature and priority of these pro Grams they obviously should include education and eradication of illiteracy the establishment of industries particularly those pertinent to agricultural production fertilizer plants food processing plants transportation systems Power plants and irrigation or. Shebeski pointed out that 11 per cent of 3.6 billion acres of the Earth s land surface is classified As arable land. An other nine per cent or 2.9 Bil lion areas is occupied by i and recreation areas. The remaining 80 per cent is unimproved pastures Forest desert mountains Tun dra and wasteland of which about four billion acres could be brought into production. Some soil experts estimate that in 35 years and with an investment of billion an additional one billion acres could be brought into Cultivar he said. Or. Shebeski said the world s starving can Best be fed through increased yields on existing arable land. In practice what should be taking place is he said. At the very time there should be an increase in the but should such a plan be i use of fertilizers a world for undertaken and completed in 35 years which is highly unlikely we would still not have an extra one billion acres of crop land. For in the 35-year Span the population would have Dou bled and the additional population would take out of production As much land As was brought into til Izor shortage has developed and the shortage is expected to continue for a the present shortage of fertilizer supplies will reduce in Dia s wheat crop by about 200 million bushels this year he said. This amount would be sufficient to meet the annual Cereal requirements of from 25 to 30 million people.
