Released last month the what Price nutrition report provides information that could help stretch your food Dollar to buy a nutritionally adequate diet families or individuals. Concerned about rising food prices the Board set out document just How much to nutritious diet. Well balanced would Cost. It found about a week or year would buy enough food to satisfy the nutritional requirements of a family of two adults a teen age boy and a Young girl based on average food prices in cities across Canada during the last three months of 1974. The costs of the Board s nutritious grocery list were a bit higher than a week in Van Couver and the Atlantic prov inces and a bit lower in on Tario Quebec and the Prairie provinces the report suggested this Cost could be reduced even fur ther by shoppers taking and Van Trage of Price by buying the least expensive brands by substituting lower Cost products of the same nutritive value wherever possible and by buying in bulk when it would reduce unit costs. Realizing people s food preferences differ the Board included a food substitution list which ranks foods according to the Cost per unit of specified nutrients. For example in the vegetable group which supplies Vitamin a Vitamin c and folic acid Broccoli cabbage carrots and potatoes Are among those listed As the least expensive sources Brussels sprouts Corn celery and tomatoes would be More expensive sources and mushrooms would be even More expensive. In the meat and alternates group supplying Iron and pro Tein baked Beans eggs Ham Burger liver Peanut butter and sardines Are listed As the least expensive sources while Bacon beef Blade or Chuck steaks and roasts beef Tongue Bologna Chicken Perch tuna Are among those second category. And wieners listed in the Side Bacon cod halibut her ring Lamb and Salomon Are listed As the most expensive meat sources of Iron and pro Tein. The report suggests two changes in food consumption patterns which would Likely re sult in lower food Bills of most families without decreasing the nutritional adequacy of the diet spending less Money on expensive protein foods and More on Vitamin and Mineral containing fruits and vegetables. The Board s reference family spent 24 per cent of its food Dollar on meat and alternates Beans eggs and Peanut but when determining the consumer Price Index. Statis tics Canada found Consumers were actually spending about 38 per cent of the food Dollar on these items. The course has been open to women since the school s inception nine years ago. All three expect some difficulty Landing their first jobs.
