Winnipeg free press men s news 18 monday March 24, 1975 teen age cancer victim wants to learn truth by Mary Jane Fine m i i special was possibly the Only thing More frightening than knowing you have cancer is not knowing it and suspecting h. That s the reason a Spunky 15-year-old Miami boy named Steve Southerland became the founder and president of an organization called kids involved in disease. I think kids Are better Able to Cope with it than says Stevie who lost his ice l leg to cancer last March. The group which meets at Miami s National children s cardiac Hospital Hopes to give Young people who now have or did have cancer a Chance to talk with others their own age who understand their feelings. So far the membership is Small less than a dozen because Many parents keep the t r u i h from their youngsters either in an Effort to spare them the worry or be cause the parents themselves Are unable to confront their child s illness. Some parents won t face says Stevie s father Ray m o n d a 36-year-old Dade county police officer. That s sad because kids today Are smart. They know and they Don t have anyone to answer their questions or share their this is not the first time that Ray Southerland and his wife Sarah Jane 35, have faced cancer. Sicvio is the oldest of their three sons and the third to be stricken with the disease. One brother Jeffrey died of leukaemia at age 4. On dec. 11, 1967 the Day before Jet Frey s death Michaei then 3, was diagnosed to have yet an other lorm of cancer. The Southerland say there re no other known cases Vic re three children in the ame family have been Ulric in by three different apparently unrelated forms of Ancer. Shortly after Christmas 1973, Stevie noticed a pain in his left leg. He was playing re jails his father. His leg was Birling so we put an ice ban Dage on it thinking it was a pulled by March the leg really so Stevie s parents took Lim to a Bone specialist. Brothers i be been going with this Man for six months and Over this period of time we be shared my apart ment and lived together every weekend. I think we re very much in love and up till last weekend i thought we d both been honest with each other about our attitudes toward life and about our past. For the first time we discussed marriage and making something permanent of our relationship. I was in favor of this until he revealed that he had been a swinger during his first marriage i must confess i was shocked. He said he did t like exchanging partners with practically everyone in his neigh boyhood and blames his wife for starting him on that kind of life. He said it actually broke up his marriage. He claims he s tired of this kind of sex but i m not so sure. _ . Dear . It s possible that this Man has matured and that he May have found sexual promiscuity unfulfilling. I find it difficult to believe however that his wife was to tally to blame for his entering into this permissive Promiscuo us life style. Studies reveal that women Are much More Lively to be reluctant to engage n any form of group sex and hat they Are the first to want 0 withdraw from the so called swinging society. Most women feel that they Are being used Only As sex objects and they Ong for More meaningful relationships in which affection and love take precedent Over simple animal sexuality that is unrelated to any deeper emotions. Love according to or. Judson Lancis professor of family sociology at the University of California is the concern of two people for each other. You love a person if his Well being his growth toward his greatest potential in All facets of his personality Are As important to you As your own. It seems to me that when a husband or a wife feels that a mate is something to be exchanged with others at random it denies True caring and love. Or. Amitai Etzioni. A Colum Bia University sociologist believes the tendency to reduce sex to pure Anima Listic behaviour is on its Way out. Affectionate bonding seems to be More important today. Apparently people whose approach to sex was strictly mechanical or unrelated to love and tenderness Are beginning to change their minds. The swinging life has for Many enslaved rather than freed them. Or. Robert Kolodny found that swingers were Dis c o v e r i no that exchanging mates contributed Little to the individual s maturation and development. He observed that 1 usually people engage in this i promiscuous life style for no i More than a year and a half j i before giving it up. J the Man you mention May i have reached that Point prior to meeting you. He May seriously be looking for a More enduring relationship. 1 Sug Gest you do not leap into any permanent relationship with him however until you re sure that his change is not just a temporary whim. While Many learn a great Deal from the errors made in a first marriage it s important or those contemplating remarriage or marriage to someone who s been married before to make a special Point of Dis cussing How they feel about marriage generally what they expect from it and where they feel they erred in their earlier marriage. The men usually were Happy to have someone listen to their Side and suggest ways to Cope with Back payments of support owed to the province. The 21-member parental sup port team was organized last april to collect More than s7 million in support payments that the province had not been receiving from husbands. For several years women have signed their support pay ments Over to the province when they have become family benefits recipients. Recipients of family benefits arc ensured a steady income. John Anderson assistant Deputy minister of Community and social services said in a Progress report last november that of s7.8 million owing million was collectible. In january there were deserted families in Ontario living on family benefits Al most a third of the total of family cases handled by he province.
