Winnipeg free press tuesday March 25, 1975 17 a review by Elouali Gibson local musicians show Quality the women s musical club held its annual meeting and a program of music monday afternoon in the Winnipeg Art gallery. The artists were Lynne Moncrief Ewert so Prano Kichard Ewert Bass and Joanne Martin Pascoe Viola with Winnifred Sim at the piano. This season our local musicians have shown their Quality and have stood up Well in com Parison with visiting artists. Monday s program was a Good example. The program opened with mrs. Pascoe s perform Ance of a Vivaldi sonata in g minor. Here was the Fine Clas sic outlines of this music. Good phrasing expressive feeling and a splendid rhythmic drive to the giga and the italian Corrente was shown. Violist Bow differently to violinists. They like cellists have to really work on tone production and we had Here a pure tone always Well sustained. Paul Hindemith s Tauer Musik came next. Hindemith a violist himself has written music of Beauty and some excitement. It had some of the same characteristics that we find in his Matthias the Painter. Once or twice mrs. Pas Coe s intonation was suspect but she captured the serious nature of this music from the Start. Mrs. Sim was a very worthy Collaborator at the piano. It was now Lynne Moncrief Ewert s turn. Some five years have elapsed since we heard her at the Competition festival As the top part of a Trio. Now As a Rose bowl Winner she has enlarged her thrilling voice. Her technique has broadened and become quite assured. In Mozart s Laudamus the we had splendid singing with some beautifully shaped phrases. This aria has an enor Mous Range for Mozart was probably thinking of Aloysia Weber with whom he was in love and vrho jilted him when he wrote it. There Are some delectable phrases in it. The two Mahler songs were taken out of his songs from childhood. There was a great emotional surge to Erin Gerung and that Lovely danc ing children s song Hans und Grethe was Sung with consummate poise and artistry and with Fine piano collaboration. A group of three songs in English brought a virtuosic Vocalise in Duke s a Piper. There were thrilling moments in Walker s setting of. Bassoon s exciting poem everyone Sud Denly burst out singing. But for sheer Beauty of. Thought and sound Robin Milford s setting of Robert Bridges poem love on my heart was quite Tran sporting. After the intermission mrs. Pascoe returned to play the Brahms sonata in e Flat opus 120 no. 2. This work the last chamber music Brahms wrote soft Comfort Able denture an easy to use flow on dental plastic that sets in minutes. One would think that the Transfer to the Viola would be easy but the instruments offer contrasts whereas the Rich Chalumeau of the clarinet is matched by an equally Rich g and c string on the Viola the upper strings of the Viola Are no match for the Cool Beauty of the clarinet s Clarino Register. If one attempts to play in the upper reaches of the Viola with Little or no vibrato the result is a sound like a contralto with a cold. The clarinet is also More adept at arpeggios than the Viola. There were a few Intonational weaknesses in the first movement but its development was a thing of wonder and Beauty. The second movement Appassionato scherzo had a Trio of great depth and Beauty and it was Well played. Both piano and Viola gave a Fine account of the variants that com prise the last movement. Finally Lynne and Richard Ewert Sang a group of three duets from Mozart operas. In each Case we had admirable blend and balance. We prefer a slightly slower Pace for both la i dare from Don Gio Vanni and Bei manner from the magic flute but there was no denying the Appeal of papa Geno Papagene from the magic flute. It was enchanting. At the Start of the program life memberships were conferred on mrs. Donald Birse mrs. J. G. Scott and mrs. Walter Tisdale to Mark their signal contribution to the life of the women s musical club. Glen Steeves 17, of Hamilton ont. Tries to Dodge a Spray of Muddy water while crossing a narrow Bridge.
