Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - March 26, 1975, Winnipeg, Manitoba 20 Winnipeg free press wednesday March 26. 1975 ask or. Brothers by or. Joyce Brothers new problems in education dear or. Brothers my father died last month and i refused to allow my two Young children to go to the funeral because i Don t want them to grow up being afraid of death As i have always been. I Veen vied those who seem to be fearless and to have no anxiety about their own death. I be been troubled with depression because of my fear of death and Only recently have 1 even been Able to admit it to my self. Since i can hardly bring my self to go to a funeral i really Don t see the necessity of Mak ing my children go. I Don t be Lieve in an afterlife and i Don t feel i was wrong in sparing my children this ordeal. My Mother and my husband How Ever disagree with me and Don t understand my attitude. . Dear . Whether or not children should attend funerals depends on their age and also upon the parents attitude about death. Parents can t help but communicate their own fears and anxieties to their children. If parents accept death As a part of life and ii they Don t have a morbid fear of death then their children Are Apt to have a healthier View of death. Rituals have a psychological importance in our lives and funerals serve an important Pur pose even though the individual attending May not believe in an afterlife. Rituals serve to unite periods of change in personal lives need to be marked by special ceremonies. People who observe these Ritu als seem better Able to adjust to changes and the alterations that these changes make in their lives. This is particularly True in the Case of death for the ritualistic period of mourn ing and the funeral service it self help survivors to work through their feelings of grief and loss. Rituals such As funerals often help to relieve anxiety for it provides an accepted outlet for the Mourner s grief. I psychologist Donald Templer tested More than people and discovered that almost All of them had some fear of death. Death anxiety is some thing we All carry he says. He 1 discovered that High school students scores were very Miliar to their Parent especially those parents of the same sex. It seems that Moth ers tend to pass their fears on to their daughters and fathers pass their anxiety on to their sons. He observed that we tend to live our lives surrounded by people of similar disposition regarding death and the Gener Al feeling about dying. That you Are Able to admit your anxieties about death and dying is a positive step toward learning to Cope with and Over coming your fear. Open discus Sion about any subject about which we have fears tends to alleviate anxiety. First it helps us to realize that we Are not alone in our feeling and that others suffer from the same anxiety and share our agony. Often a morbid or excessive fear of death can be traced Back to some specific incident in childhood. If that incident can be uncovered and discussed it May help to put it in perspective. The fear of death is a com Mon one. Studies reveal there is no tendency in older people to fear death More than younger people and that it is not a fear one has Only when faced with a severe illness. The death anxiety is fairly con Stant in our lives and it is something we All must accept and learn to live with. Our religious views seem to have some effect upon our attitudes and fears of death. There is a Sault Ste. Marie ont. C p if qualified educationists Are perplexed about the Quality of education no wonder the Public is confused says Florence Henderson educational Secretary for the federation of women teachers association of Ontario few speaking at a meeting of the federation s Nipissing chapter miss Henderson said the Job of the teacher has been clouded by the rapidity and fre Quency of new Fields entering into she said this has caused a move from the Basic academic education into the Eolia aspect adding problems sue As understanding the students emotional difficulties. It is up to society to decide what the schools should be doing. Teachers Are concerned about the children As a whole but when we look at Thi aspect it is difficult to solve one problem without aggravating another. It is difficult to educate a child in the basics let alone his whole potential. The prob Lem is we ire letting each child develop at his own rate. That creates a problem with an average class of 35 Stu dents. This is not Only a prob Lem it is simply she said teachers Are Mak ing the system work reasonably Well considering the High student teacher ratio.
