Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - November 15, 1975, Winnipeg, Manitoba Huttt Metis saturday move Fejt 15, 1975 in variety Ravel news by nom1e Smyth St. Andrews Scotland special i decided not to take my Golf clubs of a re cent one week s visit to St. Andrews and i found that the extra time i had let me discover aspects of this world famous scots town and other parts of the county of Fife that i knew about just vaguely. I motored from Edinburgh across the Forth Road Bridge turned right and kept to the coastal Road that took me into what s called the East neck of Fife the Penin Sula with some old fashioned and Lovely fishing villages. 1 spent two Days wander ing about St. Andrews. Al though i kept on meeting visitors who imitate the habit of the townspeople in carrying a Golf club instead of a walk ing stick i stayed away from the old course and the other courses. Instead i strolled through the University s grounds. I admired the buildings that Are placed in various parts of the town instead of being confined and isolated in one District. Founded in 1411, the University is the oldest in Scot land yet some of its residential buildings reminded me of the distinctive architecture of Edinburgh s new town. 1 relaxed in the Well kept remains of the Cathedral the biggest in Scotland when building started in 1160. The Structure was badly dam aged by a fire was stripped of Many ornaments and sculptures after therefor mation and some 300 years ago the scottish parliament allowed townspeople to take away some of its stones to build houses. I climbed the old St. Rule s Tower. It gave me wonderful views of the town and the Seascape. I penetrated into the secret passage and the bottle Dungeon in the old Castle on the sea front i wandered about the town s three main streets through some of the connect ing narrow wynds and spent an evening in the Small Byre really started in an old Byre with tie dres sing room in the the stage just before the last War. They have houses that show a flemish style roofing which linked the old Trade Between Scotland and the nether lauds. Today Many of the. Houses have been bought and modernized As Holiday and week end Homes by City scots but the harbours Are still their main features. Crail was my first Stop. Steeped in Royal connections like so Many places in Fife it is also famous for its lobsters and creels Are always piled on the quays. Going South i stopped at Anstruther noted for its unusual scottish fisheries museum set up some years ago to present the heritage of Scotland s fisheries. Through the museum s in trance there s a courtyard nets and two Small open fishing boats. The upper floor has a Seine net boat at work displays of nets creels and line fishing and a full size replica of a ship s wheelhouse with radio and radar that Delight youngsters. Perhaps the most popular show is the Salt water aquarium filled with fish found round the coast. A Supply of Small Fry is maintained by local children and visiting sea anglers and they Are admitted free on presentation of a live fish. Next on my tour was Pittenweem. It has a quiet bar Bor a modern fish Market houses that attract artists and a striking Parish Church whose Tower used to House the town s prison in its a few Miles further South is St. Morance known in Many parts of the world for its yachts and fishing vessels turned out Over 200 years. I wandered into a shed where m e n were building boats with an easy and not too noisy skill and they explained some of their meth ods to me. Next pleasant Small town is Elie noted for its famous golfers. The greatest was James braid born in 1870 and five times Winner of the open championship. I. I went on to lower Largo. It s world famous for it has a Statuette of Alexander Sel Kirk hero of Daniel Defoe s Kobi Uson Crusoe above the door of the cottage where he was born 300 years ago. I headed North to Cupar considered As the capital of Fife. It s a Market town and an important agricultural Centre. Then a East to Ceres which has Many distinctive features. There s a Large Vil Lage Green where an annual games meeting is held and ends with race. It has a big memorial to the Village men who fought at. Bannockburn and an amusing stonework carving titled the Provost a Jovial character holding a Toby Jug. But its. Main draw is the Folk museum a group of linked cottages packed with Domestic relics and Antiques from the area that would take a couple of hours to absorb. My week did t allow me t o visit the oddly named town of the cottage in Dunfermline where . Millionaire an Drew Carnegie was born the old town of Culross and Many other unusual places. A next time i go lost. An Drews 1 will take my Golf clubs Ril also Book a fort night s Holiday so that i can Combine a week golfing and a week touring in this area with so Many old regal connections that it s perhaps rightly called the kingdom of Fife.
