Paraffin Wax available at grocery stores is the Basic ingredient. Or a better qua Lity Wax manufactured specifically for making can be found in a Craft shop. Moulds .-.can. Be purchased or they can. Be made from containers found at Home. Smallish it juice cans milk Cartons requires a great Deal of Glass or Metal containers can be used. purchased at a Hobby shop in various thicknesses or hard Butcher Cord can be used. Wicking makes the candles Burn longer1 and keeps the flame from drowning in the melted Wax. A. Wire Core Type of wicking also Burns Well but might give off a damaging Gas. Stearic acid a White pow Dery substance sold in Craft Supply stores improves the burning Quality of the Wax by raising the melting Point therefore the candles Burn longer. To test the color of the Wax mixture drop a Little of the Wax into a Glass of cold water. The color you see is a bit lighter than the Candle will be. The method for making candles is simple and it is most enjoyable to produce a Beautiful Candle. Dyes can do interesting things to the Basic Cradle w a x they Are available commercially As a solid Wax based or in a liquid form. Crayons also can be used As a Dye. They Aren t As powerful As the dyes but by using a Little More the color can be just As Brilliant. Solid dyes and crayons can be dropped into the hot Wax As shavings while the liquid Dye can be added a drop at a time. Remember a Little goes a Long Way. The Moulds each must have a Small Hole in the Bot Tom unless you Are using wire wicking which can be inserted into the Center of the Candle before it sets completely. A Small tack tapped into the Bottom of homemade Moulds pro Vides a suitable Hole. The Wick should be Cut two inches longer than the depth of the Mould. Knot one end of the Wick and then thread the a knotted end through the Hole into the Mould pull the Wick i until tight. This anchors the Wick and holds it firmly in place. Seal the Hole from the out Side with a piece of plasticine use a Only Small piece to prevent the Mould from becoming unbalanced. Grease the inside of each Mould with cooking Oil. This will make it easier to re move the candles and it pro motes a smoother surface. Never melt Wax Over a direct source of heat a Dou ble boiler is the Best thing to use. Wax won t harm pots. Dyes might remain but will come off with Cleanser. But if possible try to select a pot which can be used for Candle making without having to worry about it. Combine the stearic acid Dye and the scent to the melted paraffin using three or four Tablespoons of stearic acid for every Pound of Wax. The amount of Dye and scent Are up to you. To keep the Wick in place after you have poured the Wax wrap the extra length of Wick around a Pencil and then balance the Pencil on top of the Mould. Don t pour All of the Wax into the Mould save some to pour into the dip which win form around the Wick As the War hardens. It is also Good to poke holes around the Wick As the Wax hardens in order to release the pres sure. The candles set Over night or place them in the Fri Titre to Harden More quickly. But Don t leave the can Nacsin the fridge too Long or the Wax will be Brittle. Make j bumped or banged As they add any Dye whip the mix Are setting. When they have hardened turn the Moulds upside Down remove the plasticine and Cut off the knot from the Bottom of the Mould. Be sure to hold your hand Over the open end Mould to catch the Candle As it slips out. If the Candle pull lightly on the Wick to ease it out. If a seam in the. Mould has caused a Ridge in the Candle scrape it lightly with a Dull knife. If the surface is a bit rough run the Candle under hot water for a minute this will help to smoother it. Trim the Wick to about half an Inch. Be sure to store your candles in a Cool place an protect them from scratching or Chipping. Many variations can be made to the Basic Candle to create interesting and Beautiful candles. Frosty candles before pouring the Wax into the Mould whip is briskly with a Fork. The Wax will be Coile Frothy and thick. The thickening will take place More quickly if Wax is cooled slightly first. Don t whip the mixture too Long or the Wax will be come too stiff to pour. Pour and set an usual. Snowy candles add the stearic acid to the melted paraffin but Don t but who s teaching you now Ture until it becomes thick and Foamy but still remains soft and pliable. Apply the Wax to the sides of a coloured Candle with a Fork similar to icing a cake to give the effect of Snow the covering will stick Best if the Candle surface is slightly rough striped candles this is an easy Way to create interesting simply pour Small amounts of. Quickly press on the Candle surface after the leaves have hardened dip the entire Candle into hot Wax for just a second to Seal completely. Floating candles make very Small candles and float them in.
