Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - January 7, 1976, Winnipeg, Manitoba Winnipeg free press wednesday 1976 proxy marriage bombs in Oregon Portland Ore. A Thomas Moore probably will have to go through that wedding ceremony again. Or maybe get another divorce. A Legal authority said Friday that Moore s new year s eve wedding will not stand up because proxy marriages Are illegal in Oregon. The opinion is from lawyer Francis Harrington author of Oregon s no fault divorce Law and a recognized authority on Oregon marital Law. Moore went through a wedding ceremony As the Chimes rang in the new year. He took Margie o Neal to be his wife. But Margie was not there. She was ill with the influenza. Standing for her in the double ring ceremony in a tiny Park in downtown Portland was a turned out to be Moore s former wife. She declined to give her name but said i know All about things like this. We were married for 15 Moore and the proxy Bride have been divorced More than a year. Rev. William Gardner of the Good news Tabernacle who performed the ceremony said of the Groom and proxy they re obviously still Good Moore said the new mrs. Moore did not know the old one would be standing in for her at the wedding. I just did t have time to Tell he said. Now that Legal authorities Are questioning legality of the marriage another question arises is Moore now legally re married to his former wife and will he have to get a second divorce if he wants to marry Margie o Neal youth scene by Andy Mellen chloroform danger seen Washington Chloro form an ingredient in Many of the United states s most popular cough syrups and a common contaminant in City drinking water has produced cancers in rats and mice in tests conducted for the National cancer Institute sources said the three year studies were made by Scien lists at Hazelton Labora tories in Vienna Virginia in conjunction with pathologists at the experimental pathology laboratories in Herndon a. Both firms Are often re lied on by Sci for analyses. On the basis of. The re ported test results Ralph Nader s health research group urged the food and drug to order chloroform removed from Many of the nation s most popular cough syrups. Fra and Sci scientists replied that the chloroform studies Haven t yet been and until they Are we won t know the re sults one Way or the we have no reason to Challenge the. Diagnosis As presented by the explained or. Norbert p. Page chief of Sci s Carcinogen Bio assay Branch. But we feel that All the data must be thoroughly re viewed before it s released. We re verifying the lesions Ini the Laboratory and actually remitting some sections of the animals to make a More detailed review. We want to be certain How extensive the data Are and How valid the results the Hareton experimental pathology studies came to Light after the Nader health group disclosed that they existed though it had few other details. The studies showed that chloroform fed orally produced liver cancers in rats and kidney cancers in mice in numbers beyond those ordinarily expected. On nov. 19, Murphy associate professor of Public health at Harvard University told an Environ mental Protection Agency Epa advisory committee that the Sci study has con firmed the carcinogenicity or cancer causing potential of chloroform. Or. Murphy said he Learned of the findings in conversations with. Sci scientists. Early bits of the results last april led Epa to express concern about chloroform As a possible Carcinogen after that Agency s tests found it in traces .1 to 311 parts per billion in All 79 municipal drinking water systems in bad tested including those in Washington. But in cough syrups we re dealing not with parts per billion but in Large phar Mac logically effective amounts from 9 to 25 Milli Grams per said or. Sidney Wolfe health re search group director. He cited National Academy of sciences and journal of the american medical association reports saying there was Little or no evidence that chloroform was an effective ingredient in cough syrup in any Case. Makers of several cough syrups have for years added chloroform As a supposed expectorant or mucous producer. When cough suppressing c o d i n e was made a prescription Only ingredient chloroform was added to other products to make it an ingredient of about one bottle in four that crosses drug store counters by health group calculation. Such products As Benyl i Brescol Cher acol c o n a r con Stuss Coric Idin Nova his line Ornacki Perl Ussin phen Ergan Gomilar i and of Tussar-2 and of and Vicks formula 44 contain chloroform. An Fra advisory panel is reviewing the safety and effectiveness of All non prescription cough remedies. It will get the Sci results As soon As they re completed Fra said. My personal opinion is that occasional use of these cough syrups would probably not be said or. Murphy. But longtime chronic use would t be a Good a lot of people do use a lot of cough or. Wolfe said there is no Safe dose of a he said. The Washington Post january is traditionally a month in which i tend to sit at Home and watch the Snow accumulate while i attempt to Wade through the huge backlog of new re Cord releases from the pre Christmas shopping season. This year is certainly no exception with literally dozens of albums by new and established artists alike vying for what usually seems like a pitifully Small amount of listening time. I d like to pick up where i left off several weeks ago namely extolling the innumerable merits of downtown flyers the outstanding debut Effort from Britain s streetwalker. Roger Chapman the Long time voice of the late great family is in Superb voice throughout the album s nine tracks which Range from concise energetic rockers to touching ballads with a tasty acoustic blues tossed in for Good Mea sure. Whether he s unleashing his remarkably intense falsetto As he does on instant classics like walking on water and a ingate or delivering the delicately expressive vocal for Gypsy Moon Chapman is undeniably one of Rock s most uniquely powerful vocalists and a pretty fair songwriter to fellow family Man Charlie Whitney is his usual masterfully understated self on guitar teaming with Bob Tench you might remember him As the Singer with Jeff Beck s rough and ready band for some Fine dual leads As Well As playing some impeccable slide on several cuts. Bassist Jonathan Plottel and Nicko on Drums round out streetwalker s exceptionally talented line up which has succeeded in making As auspicious a debut album As any group within recent memory. While that hardly comes As any great sur prise to me a devout family Man Ever since my first listen to that group s classic music in a doll s House some seven years ago i m delighted to say that downtown flyers exceeds even my wildest expectations. The result is an album on Par with a Vintage previously unavailable family up something i be always hoped for but never expected to own. Don t miss it deep purple come taste the band and Tommy Bolin teaser at the tender age of 23, Tommy Bolin clearly ranks As one of Rock s most promising Young guitar players. Already a seasoned Veteran whose list of credits include stints with Zephyr and the James gang the bang and Miami up s As Well As sessions with jazz rockers Billy Cobham spectrum and Alphonse Mouzon mind Bolin recently undertook the difficult task of replacing Ritchie Blackmore and Lead axeman with England s reigning heavy Metal favourites deep purple. Come taste the band is for Lack of a better word Standard deep purple. With the exception of a couple of selections on Side two Bolin Seldom gets a Chance to do much of anything other than sound like his predecessor. It s especially evident on the album s opening tracks comin Home and lady Luck both of which suffer from a rather poorly mixed recording along with the fact that they sound practically note for note like half of the previous band s repertoire. Disappointing to say the very least. I m much More impressed with Holm s diversity As an instrumentalist on teaser his first Solo Effort. The album covers a wide Range of styles including the disco junk influenced the grind several jazz Ilav ored pieces and a number of hard slashing rockers performed in a style reminiscent of some of Joe Walsh s hottest moments with the original James while there has never been any reason to ques Tion his credentials As a guitarist Bolin also acquits himself More than adequately As a Singer and song writer throughout the proceedings. Backed by a top notch cast of studio musicians including Dave Sanborn on saxophone and genesis Phil Collins on Drums for one Cut Tommy Bolin has taken a major step towards establishing a Well deserved reputation As one of the most proficient Well rounded Young musicians currently playing. Given time he might even be Able to inject some new life into deep purple. For the nonce teaser is a Strong entry from a Young Man with a very Bright future. Chilliwack Roc Kerbox while Chilliwack has Seldom lived up to the potential displayed on its two albums As the collectors it remains one of Canada s most consistently entertaining Rock acts. The group is still plugging away with its new album Roc Kerbox ranking As its Best in some time. While the album s eight hard Rock oriented tracks lacks the refinement and musical subtleties of a rain of or seventeenth summer they do serve As a solid springboard for Bill Henderson and Howard Froese s Riff dominated dual guitar interplay. Save for the album opening if you want my love which has hit single potential there s nothing very exceptional about any of the songs Al though Chilliwack s energetic no nonsense approach is still capable of making even average material sound goo. Styx Equinox after scoring several notable am successes styx has beefed up its Over All sound while managing to retain a number of the pop Quali ties it has utilized most effectively in the past. Hard Rock influences abound Midnight ride sounds like a re make of West Bruce and Laing s Why which in t surprising considering that guitarists John Curulewski and James Young beg borrow and steal licks from an incredible array of and combined with the group s clean precise vocal harmonies styx gets the Job done song after song. To say the very least the group has absorbed and assimilated its Many influences extremely Well you could go crazy picking out riffs and various bits you know you be heard somewhere before hey that s my car mailman is so right Detroit a mailman Dan Shields was completing his rounds when an Auto hit the rear of his mail truck As he was picking up mail from a Box. He jumped into his mail truck and took off after the culprit car. He had gone less than a Block when he looked at the stickers on the Back of the fleeing car and said to him self hey that s my he was right. The car had been stolen from a shopping Centre a few minutes earlier while his wife was shopping. Or. Shields maintained his Pursuit until the car stopped and its four occupants ran off in four different directions. He told police the Only damage to his car was to the right front fender and an ignition switch. Semi annual save save save a stylish selection a spectacular clearance. Just when you need it the most.
