Sir if t. It. Edwards chairman of the Manitoba Cal Ali services commission was Able to calculate that on the average doclors1 office overheads will amount to 40 per cent of Gross earnings in 1976, Why was lie unable to make this calculation for 1074 and 1975? he must have information in ins computers and in re ports of net incomes from elsewhere which would give him pretty exact figures for 1974 and 1975. Yet or. Edwards stated on december 4 that he d have to Start looking at outside sources of income und examining doctors books be fore he d be Able to deter mine Cost increases in medi Cal practice Over the past two years. And even then if anyone really believes that he does t already have the required information from Oiler government and out Side source he says he does t agree with providing a fee. Increase to permit doctors to catch up on their increased and unforeseen expenses in 1974 and 1075 Over what they received in those years namely six per cent in 1974 and five per cell in 1975 even though the com Mission indicated to us Dur ing 1074 that this would be considered. Or. Edwards Lias termed the Manitoba medical association s request for a catch up on expenses As being a retroactive matter. In fact the Mma has re Quested an increase of 4.9 per cent in 1976 As a retrospective matter a looking Back on 1074 and 1975 and agreeing that since Phy the doctors Haven t been suffering in history by the Canadian press Jan. The japanese army invaded Burma 34 years ago today five after capturing Northern Malaya. Simultaneously there were successful japanese landings Oil dutch and Ameri can islands in Southeast Asia. The Burma Campaign lasted barely three months before the British and Indian armies were driven Back into India and the Burma Road to China was captured. The first Check to the japanese came in the naval Battles of the Coral sea and Midway when the United Stales Navy intercepted fleets in May and june 1042. 1778 France recognized the Independence of tile United states. 18b9 Montreal Star first appeared. 1928 Trotsky Ami other bolshevik leaders exiled from Russia. 1963 about 180 sons of Freedom Dou Kobors arrived in Victory Square Van Couver s favorite hangout for hoboes by bus and car from Hope . Collie a re tired Farmer of Zurich ont die ii St age 102. Sir the following is a let Ter sent to Hon. Laurent Des Jardins minister of health for Manitoba we Are writing with re Spect to current negotiations Between the provincial government and Hie medical profession specifically with respect to the doctors threat january 7, to draw their services should an offer satisfactory to them not be forthcoming within a week. We strongly urge Yon to stand firm by your present offer which is both reasonable and More Llian fair both in terms of percentage and absolute figures. If Ordinary mortal canadians must Settle Lor an. Annual increase of some then certainly the almighty Doc lors should be Able to make a go of in with a raise. To the medical association s protest that this would mean a decline in the level of service resulting from alleged inability to maintain proper premises equipment etc., this is disingenuous in the Light of the facts. These facts made Public by several eminent members of the medical faculty at the University of Manitoba some months ago indicate the sex Lent to which the medical profession has been widening the income Gap separating its members from the closest runner up. When you need a nurse Call 943-7466 registered nurses invalid care elderly care at employees screened Fiona fed and insured 24 hour service live in companions private duty nursing homemakers health care services Upjohn limited in other words doctors ability to maintain premises equipment and staff Assis Tance has been increasing at a much greater rate than that of other professionals to meet corresponding expenses not to mention the Abiu by of All groups in society to maintain the usual creature comforts no individual or group has Ever Given up a pre eminent social economic position without a fight and there s nothing wrong with a Good old fashioned democratic clash of viewpoints. But the Battle has been going on Long enough. By de m a n d i n g unjustifiable in creases to their Keady astronomical incomes while Oiler canadians Are settling for considerably less the doctors Are behaving in a n n c r incompatible with Good citizenship and Justice. We urge that the Settle ment offered not exceed tie wage guidelines presently accepted by the rest of society and that these guidelines not be reinterpreted in the face of threats of service withdrawal. Should tie doctors choose to strike their s will be the responsibility for any Resul Tant tragedy just As occurred in Saskatchewan in 1062. Lionel b. Steiman Laura l. Steiman Winnipeg Sci aids expenses Rose out of proportion in those two years they should receive an increase in fees in 1076 to compensate for that. At no time did the Mma ask for a retroactive in crease meaning going Back to january 1074 and adjusting every payment since that time and or. Edwards and health minister Desjardins both know that. In fact it is this Point which the Mma wishes to refer to the anti inflation re View Board for a interpretation. Obviously or. Edwards and or. Desjardins Public statements about retroactively Are meant to mislead anyone not following things closely. If they re attempting to mislead in one area Are there Ether areas in which the same applies such As in the area of net income improvement allowable under the anti inflation guidelines or its distribution it makes one wonder. Or. P. G. W. A. Lommerse Killarney Man. Indigestible sir the real reasons for Ottawa s move to halt publication of the Canadian Issue of Reader s digest May Welt have their roots in the digest s insistence on printing articles such As ithe undo ing of great Britain Jan uary 1976. Any and for the Benefit of canadians i repeat any publication that consistently exposes the economic moral and intellectual fraud that is socialism collectivism com will find no sympathy or support among our present Liberal leadership. In Canada As in China Cuba Russia where govern ments the decision making it is Only logical that these govern meals should also control what we May or May not read eat think do Elc. How Many of these fundamental changes Are in store for us in or. Tradeau s new j. W. Jeffries Winnipeg ask Union leaders first or. Schreyer sir following is copy of my recent letter to premiered Schreyer re suggested first contract Law forcing wage contracts on employers i who refuse to bargain in Good Faith. 1 read with interest the accounts of your recent news conference reported in the Winnipeg free press. You suggested that a Law forcing wage contracts on employers who refuse to bargain in Good Faith. With unions was possible. I would suggest that this Law represents Complete and utter disregard for. Any jus Tice unless a corollary were added. This would include that a wage contract is forced on employees whose Union docs not bargain in Good Faith or As a matter of fact does not really bargain at All through ridiculous demands. I would suggest that Union officials be asked what they think of the Law with equal and fair distribution of responsibility in contract negotiations. I have a sneaking suspicion hat the unions would not like free and just arbitration too much and therefore would not be interested in this Type of a Law. Ii. T. Huebert . Winnipeg Bias is showing sir i am writing in regard to your Story about Anne Armstrong s appointment As ambassador to Britain. The Story is titled wife of Texas millionaire to be . Envoy to and the open ing paragraph mentions her husband again. I doubt if her husband s wealth or status was one of the biggest factors in making this Choice. Her own capabilities were the important Rea sons. As you note half Way through the article she was at. One Lime the highest ranking woman in the Nixon administration. To be a Little realistic you could also include her relationship to other officials not just Wilmen. I think that if the free press will report the important items in their stories this kind of faulty biased journalism will not occur As often As it does now. L. Larcombe Winnipeg ask or. Brothers by or. Joyce Brothers Deau or. Brothers i m a Black Mother and i just Learned that my child will be bused to a school that has been largely White. Everybody in our Community thinks this is a Good thing and that we Blacks should dress land s january clearance Sale continues to january 31 save up to 0 on All fall Winter ladies fashions both stores open Thura. Fri. Till 9 . Winnipeg s Complete ladies Wear self serve shop support it. Since my name won t be printed t can say freely that i m uptight about this new plan. Most of All i want my child to learn but i m afraid that if thereto a lot of Auger around him maybe hell be too frightened to learn. I m also afraid he Wilt get Hurt. I be been so upset by this that i be thought of lying to my friends and neighbors and making up some excuse to keep him Home. I Don t want him to hate school or to have his feelings Hurt so he can t learn. . Dear . I understand your anxiety about your child s welfare under Circum stances that May be trying. It s important to re member though that we hear about the areas where violence occurs when schools Are being racially balanced but we Seldom hear about the areas where busing takes place in an atmosphere of Harmony and Good will. I Don t know your child s age but the adage is True Elu Loren do have to be taught to Hale. If left on their own most children get along Well. The difficulties they May have Are probably related to personality differences rather than to race. A recent study of learning efficiency in an Urban school system was conducted in the Philadelphia area. Re searchers found thai Bolh Black and White slide nos at elementary and senior High Levels seemed to improve their achievement rate when they attended Small schools which nearly evenly balanced racially. The match of teachers race and students race apparently is immaterial to student achievement. Neither Black nor White teachers show superiority in effecting higher achievement. In Stu dents. We All learn by hearing different opinions seeing Dif Ferent faces and being exposed to different attitudes. Sameness tends to produce boredom a 11 d indifference. It s important for every child and adult to learn How to get along with those who May come from different Back grounds and hold different views. Children who Are deprived of this learning experience often have a much More difficult time once they Are out in the world. Fortunately we live in a Multi racial Multi cultural world and the sooner a child can experience some of this info Nile variety the better. I think your child is much More Likely to be damaged by any Story you make up to keep him out of this new school than he could possibly be by the experience itself. It is important however to prepare him for what he May meet. Your attitude is most important. If you want him to be comfortable and Happy you must try to Over come your own apprehension and fear. Let him know that while Many children will Welcome him others May have been taught prejudice and May make cruel in Friendly remarks. This is of course very difficult for any child but it s essential for even the very Young to learn How to Deal with bigotry and ignorance. Teach him to try to ignore insults and to real ize that they come from pre Judice that will we Hope eventually be overcome through education and under standing. Try to make him Sec this new experience As an important step toward making his world a better place. Don t paint a picture that is unrealistically Rosy but on the other hand Don t project your own fear and anxiety on to him. It May be easier than you think and in a few months you la wonder Why you were so worried. Ryant becomes school director Joseph c.
