Letters to the editor society tack by Trudeau no Surprise sir prime minister tru Deau s recent references to a new society in which More shading would be required Are hardly prophetic. A sizeable proportion of citizens anticipated his Prog Nosis by a year or More judging by grassroots responses i heard in 1974-75, when i asked a Cross Section of 750 canadians this ques Tion what kind of society would you like to live tins was one of five questions asked during1 project feedback a social Experiment carried out for the Canadian Catholic Confer ence of Bishops. Most canadians i inter viewed aspire to some kind of new society. It May not be a strongly Felt aspiration in Many instances but it is there. Frequently respondents referred to what they saw As promising social models or trends. Here i encountered two social preoccupations which at first appeared contradictory Many Are fascinated with what is happen ing in maoist China and at the same time there is a nation wide aversion to bigness in any sector of social life a Strong preference for Small local and personalized organization. Most respondents in que Bec and Many in the Atlantic provinces and the West chose to describe their societal aspirations in local provincial or regional terms not in National or International perspectives. Varying versions of separatism were heard in every Region of Canada except Ontario at least for the purpose of negotiating a better Deal within confederation. Some Quebec citizens clearly believe a More human society a genuine alternative to the present technological system is possible Only if Quebec leaves the Ca Nadian partnership and concentrates on deepening its francophone culture. In All four regions Many canadians in different walks of life expressed their Socie Tal goals in terms of human values rather than in poli tical geographic terms. From the Pacific to the at lactic there Are men and woman who Long for and work towards a More human social order whether it is local or Provin Cial National or global. That has to be encouraging. Now if Only our elected representatives would catch up to where the people Arel Grant Maxwell director social affairs desk Canadian Catholic conference Ottawa out. How about those guidelines me. Uruski sir i think the time has finally come for or. Uruski the minister in charge of a topic to answer the Many questions and criticism with respect to aut Opac. At a time when the Federal government has decreed that prices and wages should be kept under control or. Uruski tells us that in spite of a Good financial year we will be faced with rate in creases of up to 15 per cent. As a result of this 1 have taken it upon myself to make an appointment with or. Uruski to meet with myself and a group of concerned citizens and the press to enable him to clarify some of the mystery that seems to surround this venture financed entirely by taxpayers. It is the right of the tax payers of Manitoba to a pub Lic accounting of nil funds received and distributed by this Public corporation. I personally have several questions about a company that has been legislated into a monopolistic situation Deal ing in a service As essential As Auto insurance and yet still seems to lose taxpayer s Money. There is a possibility that aut Opac is being run properly in accordance with accepted business practices and that any losses that have been incurred Are in fact legitimate losses As a result of unforeseen and unpredictable costs. If such is the Case then i should think that any inquiry into aut Opac s affairs should be welcomed by or. Zumski As an excellent Opportunity to make Public the full truth about what is being done with the taxpayer s Money. The fact that such an in Quiry is being conducted by the taxpayers and not the government they support should carry much More weight with those same tax payers. In fact if aut Opac is. Everything it claims to be 1 should think the minister would be jumping at the Opportunity to allow the tax paying Public to vindicate him and his corporation once and for All and in Public. This is a Call to All citizens to join me in tin s quest for the answers regardless of political party or even regardless of your stand on a topic. Although she has never missed an open ing it seems that she pretty regularly misses the Point. Why she insisted that the characters portrayed in naked on the North Shore were really stupid people falsely justified As Noble Savages in conflict with the dark satanic Mills the South is a puzzler. But then Lee thinks that the Manitoba theatre workshop is part of the Manitoba theatre Centre. We Are just Good friends. The Point of the show was that Labrador ans desperately need and want a piece of the twentieth Century be fore it too passes them by although they intend to stay quite vigorously alive while they wait. And the Point of this letter is to remind her that one does not write a review by stringing together a group of sardonically misplaced Story fragments beneath an incorrectly recalled phrase from Blake. Mills were London cathedrals not Winnipeg factories she May see herself As a kind of Susanna Moodie roughing it in the Canadian Bush but for heaven s Sake Why can t she put Down her Robertson Davies and take up her Marie Campbell of Lier Rudy Wiebe and try to recognize that the intellectual life she pleads for is not a monopoly of any accent any income or any re g i o n in this much divided country. Ted Johns theatre pass Moraille at Manitoba theatre workshop Winnipeg one Man s opinion sir the More 1 read about women s desires the More i become amused. As far As getting Equality for them selves they Are using the wrong approach. Beside the issues involved women will forever be women in conflict with their temperaments. 1 sincerely believe the world of Man will never be conquered totally by starry eyed romantics. Females through the Ages have been known As Beautiful soft cuddly additions to a Man s ego. If they Are True intelligent and show respect for them selves and the ones who have Faith in their womanhood i m sure women will have no trouble advancing their status and will Rise to the Heights men have attained. Freedom is a seven letter word and As tempting and devastating As the Apple tree was in the Garden of Eden. Abuse its existence and concept and what have you got corruption immorality restlessness perverted character and destructive attitudes bordering on in sanity to gain spiteful Satis factions. Let s face it Laws were conceived by Man and woman conceives what is relative to Man s Comfort while he builds towards the unification of Liis surroundings while in All things respecting and rewarding the role woman plays in the Emer gence of his greatness.
