Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - February 2, 1976, Winnipeg, Manitoba F. Winnipeg free press monday february 2, 1976 13 a review women dangerous All affirms Chilliwack is acceptable but lacking in spontaneity by Barbara cans1no a Chilliwack concert is for people who want to sit for an hour and listen to Basic Rock and Roll music by a Basic and seasoned Rock and Roll band which has had two or three Basic and seasoned top of the Chart hits. Sunday night at the play House the Chiu Wack concert was predictably ?.dequate one hour plus one encore of steady driving music to a hard Rock beat. One or two highs no real lows. On stage and off there was a consistent Energy level but no real spontaneity or Pas Sion. No real wonder. On stage and off the Odds were not in favor of spontaneous enthusiasm. What with the transit strike the weather and the concert postponement Only 500 people showed up for the concert. Lead vocalist Bill Hen Lerr son Sang be there s no Audi ence there just Ain t no but there was a s h o a and an acceptable show but More in the nature duty than love. Chilliwack was committed to the commitment of per forming a set with ingredients by Rote some intricate work on guitar a reasonable dose of Rock Star Charisma lonesome Mary crazy talk groundhog. And the audience was committed to its commitment to Chilli Wack s offerings. At the end of the concert the hard Core whooped up enough noise for an encore though several people were walking and the encore turned out to be the most energetic and Happy song of the night Rock and Roll music Sung with appreciation and life. Chilliwack is a four Man band composed of three guitarists and a drummer. As a foursome the band was to Gether. What it lacked in spontaneity it almost made up for in Well timed dynamics both musical and physical. The Solo spotlight was on Bill Henderson and How Ard Froese. Together and Solo they displayed guitar expertise versatility and a certain theatricality. Marianne was an instrumental concert highlight. Henderson performs Lead vocals. While most of Chilli Wack s songs require an Abil Ity to shout rather than sing. Henderson proved that he has an emotionally far reaching voice in if you want my love a song from Chilliwack s new Roc Kerbox album. Henderson also has Rock Star dynamics. Facial ones anyway. Henderson is a bit of a ringer for Jagger. At least Between the nose and the Chin. And he uses the likeness in a More than occasional series of Fang bar i n g gum Baring snarling and Mouth munching. It s not original but it works. If you looked like e. G. Robinson and ended up in the movies you would be wasting it All with a Virginia slim in your Mouth. Chilliwack did t quite come on with a bang be cause they had to Check out their equipment for some Vancouver weather related reason. Equipment checked and House Down which took much too Chilliwack devoted most of their set to Strong hard Rock. They played old songs and new the Well known and unknown. For the most part instrumentation took Prece Dence Over the lyrical mainly b e c a a s e you could t make out too Many of the lyrics. Last Day of de Cember from the new Roc Kerbox album was a new year s Resolution to be Good to Mankind but Loo Rock loud to find out How to do it. Crazy talk warranted More a review enunciation and style than most numbers and the con Cert closed with a belted out showmanship version groundhog. But the most effective song was ironically the slowest if you want my an unusual Lour de Force for Hen Derson and not a totally unlikely candidate for the top thirty. The concert opened with a half hour set by harlequin a four Man Rock baud from Winnipeg. Harlequin played non Stop Standard Rock music for 20 consecutive minutes. The second part of Harle Quin s set was devoted to songs and instrumental composed by the band members. Harlequin s strength Lay in their smooth Well executed transitions which changed the mood and beat subtly effectively sometimes quite magically. More often than not though harlequin s lyrics were inaudible and the band seemed More like a vehicle for the serious Talent of their Lead guitarist. Canada can provide food for 50 million Ottawa up although agriculture in Canada is severely Resl Rickerl by climate and soil the country can realistically support Between 35 and 50 million people Accord ing to an agriculture depart ment spokesman. Or. R. L. Halstead said however that by allowing 10 bushels of wheat per person annually it is possible Canada could support a population of to million people. However that would not be a desirable situation. We must not disassociate ourselves from the global problem of he said recently during a panel discussion on limits to population growth at the University of Ottawa s festival of life science seminar. Ronald Ritchie a Canadian member of the club of Rome said that group s report on world population trends was pessimistic. The problem of. Clement Markert a Yale University geneticist said the global population if allowed to increase at the present rate would reach 150 billion in two centuries too Many for Earth to Sii stain. There s no doubt about the Long term prognosis. The birth rate must go Down or the death rate go or. Markert said. Ration s vocal renditions showed excellent style by Ronald Gibson the Winnipeg Art gallery presented Howard Hatton baritone in recital sunday afternoon before a Small audience. Carol Arnason was the pianist and the program from the 17th to the 20th Cen Turies contained some time less examples of the Singer s Art. Or. Hatton on the staff. Of Oberlin College has a Light baritone always Well controlled. He sings with taste and technical matters Are always Well looked after. Of the first group of Early Arias the Handel Arias showed excellent style and the coloratura in the aria from Samson was very Well done. The Middle Section was a Fine contrast. The 17th Cen Tury Charpentier s Ruisseau qui Norris Dan Sun. Bois produced a Fine Legato and this Lovely aria was most successful. The Lully aria was upset by an Accident but the Monteverdi aria from orfeo showed us the developing aria still in recitative style. Then came the four serious songs of Brahms. Here we needed a Darker color particularly for the first. Although diction was always exemplary the Gen eral impression was not really satisfactory. The piano was inclined to drag in Ich Wandtke in Rich and while the lyrical Section of Wenn Ich Mit menschen was very Good the great truths of St. Paul did not really come through due to the Lack of a dark heroic tone. Following the intermission we had really sensitive sing ing in too songs of Faure and Debussy s setting of three Ballades of Francois Villon were very successful. Or. Hatton Sang with taste and miss Arnason s playing of Debussy was very effective whereas her playing of Faure was too much like German lieder. The last group contained five Short songs by Charles i v e s evening was quite Beautiful and Ann Street most effective. As an encore or. Hatton Sang Vaughan Williams Bright is the ring of words. The ending of this song was quite exquisite. He showed that he Kruis what to do with a song even if the voice Lias lost some of the splendour it once had. Miss Arnason plays Well she knew the accompaniments very Well. She needs now to show that she can adapt to the Singer s most changes of rhythm or mood and then she should go far. In a program of folksong mostly in russian we heard that extraordinary voice again and marvelled at its Beauty its Power and its Range. Assisted by a quintette of four plectrum instruments and a piano accordion the presentation was extremely Well rehearsed Singer and players were always at one and everyone had his music from memory. Rebroff s voice ranges in pitch from Low d to High i full voice and then he has that additional falsetto Register smoothly joined to his fundamental voice. The Lone is always Rich in Quality whether falsetto or real and capable of great expansion. How cannot really say because the technique used included an amplification. After the first item the Levels were adjusted the ringing was suppressed and the result was a big sound if lacking any Subtle nuance. Ivan Rebroff is a genial Host and his English is very acceptable. However there was a rather stagy Way he had to gain rapport with his audience but everyone seemed to react amiably to his Blandishments. Among the stratagems lie uses is to sing at a cadence a very Low note on a covered Vowel then open the sound to make a telling Crescendo. His technique includes trills very neatly executed in falsetto. What musical Impact of this concert every russian song seemed to be in a minor Mode Mak ing for a continuously dark color. Often the choruses gradually gathered Speed and the oomph accompaniments became rather Dull after an hour or so. However the Cohe Sion of it All was admirable. Of the Many songs we knew Only the Birch tree and the Cossack song and these provided much warmth on a cold night. Rebroff s Patter singing is a Model always Clear always pointed always adequately furnished with controlled. We feel that some sort of printed program was merited if Only to Tell us his origins.
